Bleak Faith is a game almost entirely carried by its - and I really don't like using this word in this way so bear with me here - vibes . Moment to moment gameplay isn't exactly what I'd call glamorous, even for someone well-versed in slightly clunky soulslikes. Combat is so R1-spammy it quite literally has a mechanic that penalises you for not doing it, environments are sprawling with unclear direction (and not too often in the fun way), you're constantly subjected to minor glitches and inconveniences and out of bounds weirdness, most bosses aren't really that engaging... I could probably go on, even without resorting to nitpicking. Yet when you're wandering alone across a tiny concrete beam above an endless chasm between two impossibly towering brutalist structures, looking out towards rotating giant shattered rings obscured by distant fog orbiting some unknown mechanism and so far into the distance you can't even hope to imagine how big they truly are, as a single extended distorted guitar tone pierces the air as if the omnistructure itself was heaving out one last dying gasp, you can't help but think the developers really have something here. There's an incredible spark of inspiration and genius shining through the cracks. And I suppose that pretty much sums up the experience of playing Bleak Faith: a constant battle between the brilliance of the environmental and world design, and the slog of actually having to play through it. Now to any fellow insane masochistic gamers reading this that description might make you think of another game, which would be the ever-revered-and-hated Rain World. But where that game succeeds and this one fails I think is in intentionality. That game is frustrating by design, this one just kind of feels like the developers couldn't quite bring their vision to fruition. I suppose I'll namedrop Dark Souls 2 here as well, as both feel quite similar in that regard. So hey, if you like games that hate you a little bit then you are fully equipped for Bleak Faith. It's with games like these I'd appreciate a 'Mixed' or conditional recommendation all the more. Ignore all the old reviews, this game apparently launched way buggier which is why I avoided it for a couple years to try and avoid spoiling such an amazing concept too early and ruining the experience. With this likely being the final build of the game, I think even after all the patches a lot of people would still bounce right off its awkwardness after an hour or so, but I'd hate to play any part in driving away the people that would truly appreciate the extremely high highs. Fact of the matter is, you can't really find this experience and atmosphere anywhere else, and that alone is worth celebrating.
Bleak Faith: Forsaken has its issues, and is rough around the edges due to its indie nature. But overall, it achieves its intended purpose: To evoke the same feelings as playing Dark Souls 1 for the first time. I had a thoroughly frustrating, confusing, awe-inspiring, and triumphant time the likes of which most Soulslike games fail to capture. I recommend this for anyone in search of that 'je ne sais quoi'. Perhaps watch a Beginners Guide to mitigate early game frustration. Or don't, if you really want that thrill of dawning understanding when a mechanic clicks for you. I don't think you'll regret this game either way, especially at its asking price of a mere $30.
This is maybe the best game ever made. After saying this, i have to come clean: it is not. but hear me out. i once strolled a reddit post about soulslikes and the question was "enotria or Bleak faith" and someone commented: "if you like rewarding exploration, bleak faith". i, who already had enotria in the shopping cart but never ever heard about bleak faith, was intrigued because i love nothing more than rewarding exploration. secrets, a corner of the map where maybe i was the only one who ever got there and maybe there is a little reward for me. and this game has a ton of rewards, tangible, useful rewards. this game, even though it doesn't want to be called a soulslike, is a soulslike and it invoked within me the exact same curiousity and feel i had with the original dark souls back then. the game is very nonlinear and the world design is very very confusing. you will get lost. but don't worry, you will love every second of it. it is not very long though and i hope the developers will give me a bleak faith forsaken 2 one day and when they do, i hope they don't try to impress anyone but themselves, because the ideas they had were quite unique. if i wanted a polished triple A fasstfood game, i would go for a call of duty or fifa, but ever now and then, a dev comes out and puts out a little gem, like this one. this game plays a bit janky here and there, but the bosses are creative, learnable and rarely remotely unfair. it is remarkable how well this game plays, while it feels at times as if it came out 10 years too late. i originally bought it on ps5, brought it to platinum and bought it for steam as well, also getting all achievements (played it on steamdeck without problems). i did not encounter any bugs or notable glitches or crashes on either system. a little bit of warning though: do not look at any trailers for the game. no trailer i ever saw about this game showed how it really was. i believe most of them are tech demos or "how it should have been". just go for a lets play if there is one. if you want to know more, maybe leave a question total verdict: something around a 90/100, especially because of the atmosphere and the soundtrack
This is my first review ever. After playing Bleak Faith: Forsaken for at least 93 hours and unlocking all the achievements, I can confidently recommend this game ONLY if you enjoy the following: - Immersive atmosphere (strongly inspired by Blame) - Variety in character builds - Challenging gameplay (at least on your first playthrough) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ However, there are some weak points in my opinion: - The enemy AI is not the best (most enemies share the same attack patterns) - Once you obtain a stronger weapon, the game's challenge decreases significantly (it is also easy to create an overpowered build) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The music is subjective; for me, it helps create a great atmosphere, but I am sure that for some people, hearing the same music loop in almost every scenario may become tedious. If you are a Dark Souls veteran, this game could feel very easy, but if you are not, it may prove to be a difficult challenge. The vast environments and ambiguous NPC dialogues could also make progression stressful. Believe it or not, Bleak Faith: Forsaken (before its console release) was one of my reasons for building a gaming PC. Considering the game was developed by just three people, I am satisfied with the final product. I am looking forward to a DLC, hopefully!
