Borderlands lays the foundation for one of the greatest looter-shooter series of all time. Despite showing its age, the iconic art style, charming humour, and satisfying gunplay still make Pandora worth experiencing.

There is something really enjoyable about experiencing Borderlands as a solo adventure. The combination of first-person shooting, RPG progression, and an almost ridiculous number of weapons gives the game a unique identity. I especially enjoyed exploring the different areas and gradually becoming more powerful. Borderlands is much more enjoyable with friends. The shooting and looting become more entertaining when everyone has different characters, weapons, and playstyles. Fighting through groups of enemies together feels chaotic in a good way, and finding better loot gives everyone something to look forward to. The story is simple and the quests can become repetitive, but the atmosphere, humor, and visual style kept me interested. It feels like an old-school shooter mixed with an RPG, and that combination still works surprisingly well. If you have a couple of friends who enjoy shooters and RPG-style progression, the co-op experience is definitely worth playing. Enjoy :)

When I played Borderlands on release back in ye olde X-Box 360 days, it was amazing. It's still fun, but the writing pales compared to Borderlands 2. The gameplay, especially for vehicles, is clunky. It shows its age. It's still fun. I enjoyed my last playthrough for it. But it wasn't and still isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. There is one character who is blatantly stronger than the other three combined, for example. Despite all of this, if you don't want to get the other version of Borderlands for whatever reason (some computers disagree with this version or that version, for example, but almost never both), then you won't go wrong getting this version. It's still as much fun as it was back in the day, even with the shock of age removing those rose tinted glasses. My only serious complaint? It FEELS open world, but isn't really. More like.. connected zones. And as such I thought exploration would be a big thing. It literally isn't a thing at all. In fact, you will get stuck most times you try. So, word of warning on that end. Otherwise.. Have fun!

I prefer Borderlands 1 to Borderlands 2. Sure, the environments could've been less repetitive while still keeping a badlands look, and there could've been a bit more active plot for extra engagement (without falling into quirky millenial mush of more recent entries), but the vibe of the game feels better, it's properly desolate and hostile with appropriate dashes of dark humor. There's less junk in the weapons you find, they feel more balanced in that regard, and I find weapons feel better to use, they look less stupid overall too, and the enemies generally feel less bullet sponge-y. The cripplingly low FOV can thankfully be fixed by setting up an hotkey to change FOV in the config, the only annoying part was the online connection being a bit rough and laggy, from experience. I tried Enhanced and it was about as laggy unfortunately. Eridian weapons were a cool idea too, I just wish they were less bad and got improved instead of being straight up cut from later games.
