In the vast minefield of roguelites and arcade shooters, BORE BLASTERS blasts its way into the spotlight with a quirky concept and pixel-perfect execution. Developed by indie studio 8BitSkull, this game is equal parts mining, mayhem, and mechanical mastery. At its core, BORE BLASTERS is a frantic, twin-stick shooter where you pilot a heavily armed drill-copter straight down into the earth. Your mission? Carve your way through layers of rock, harvest precious gems, and survive waves of underground threats. It’s a fast-paced loop that perfectly balances chaos and control. Each run is procedurally generated and only lasts a few minutes—short enough to keep things snappy, but packed with tension. The deeper you go, the tougher the enemies and terrain, forcing you to adapt on the fly with quick upgrades and split-second decisions. Visually, the game’s retro pixel art shines. Environments are colorful, destructible, and delightfully animated. Enemy designs are varied, from angry mole-bots to lava-dwelling horrors, all backed by a punchy synth soundtrack that keeps your adrenaline spiking. Sound effects are crisp and satisfying. Each gem ping and explosion lands with weight, giving you constant feedback without overwhelming the action. Between runs, you’ll use collected gems to upgrade your gyrocopter with stronger weapons, faster drills, and cooler abilities. This meta-progression keeps the game feeling fresh even after dozens of dives. Still, the progression can feel grindy after a while. With no overarching narrative or campaign, motivation depends entirely on your love for the core loop—which, fortunately, is extremely fun. BORE BLASTERS doesn’t pretend to be more than it is—and that’s its strength. It’s a pick-up-and-play adrenaline rush with bite-sized runs, clever enemy design, and just enough upgrade depth to keep you coming back. If you enjoy roguelites, drilling mechanics, or twin-stick chaos, this one’s a gem. Pros: -Addictive arcade gameplay loop -Crisp, charming pixel visuals -Short, high-intensity runs perfect for quick sessions -Satisfying upgrades and unlocks Cons: -Can feel repetitive in long bursts -Light on story and world-building Rating: 8/10

A fun little time sink - just be aware if you are a completionist that the 100% achievement will be a bit of a slog like in many games of this type.

Sideways thumb. It's missing something for me to really care and get invested in it, but it's pretty easy to load it up and play through a few stages and have fun.

As a fan of Void Scrappers, I decided to check out this mining shmup from developer 8BitSkull. A bit like Super Motherload, the story plays out in text conversations as you carve new mineshafts and collect gems, but unlike in that game, you don't have to ascend to the surface to complete a run. Let alone periodically to refuel and repair. Instead, the fuel supply and hull integrity of your ship needs to last until you reach your objective. Otherwise, it's a failed run, though you get to keep the collected gems to use extending your craft's range, adding armor to its hull, or upgrading the guns. Yep, you blast your way through a variety of different types of rock strata using a gatling gun, which is helpful also against enemies who appear in increasing numbers as the game goes on and you clear more levels which are represented by grid squares in the game's overworld map. Depending on the character you choose, there is a recharging special ability, though I have a tough time imagining playing the game without my chosen character's ability of a boost that carves through rock like butter and makes it much easier to reach the objective within one tank of gas (and some pickups along the way). While I was still reserving judgment a bit, two hours in, at the four hour mark I realized that not only is this game addictive, it's pretty fun. The upgrade system does an admirable job of keeping the player right on the edge of the mining craft being powerful enough to reach the end of the longer levels, without making this feel a dawdle trivialized by these improvements. I could easily walk away, now, and be satisfied with the experience, but I'm still enjoying myself and will keep going to try and clear the rest of the levels. One of the things that I appreciated about Void Scrappers was that, unlike a lot of the "forever games" in the genre, it had an attainable ending. And this looks to be similar in that respect.

BORE BLASTER is a fun little game that I did enjoy playing for 2/3 of the way. It's just fun to dive into the dig sites with your little helicopter, gathering crystals and upgrading your vehicle during the run. The goal is always to blast through rocks and stones fighting enemies and collecting resources on your descent to the big chest at the bottom of each dig site (that's your exit). The biomes vary, not just for the actual level but also depending on the depth you are in. Overall a very entertaining experience. However, once you have all of the permanent upgrades, the game becomes a bit boring in the last third. All you can use your resources for is buying one-off perks that give you more stats for a run. This makes the game too easy as you become overpowered pretty fast in a run. I can still recommend the game but would buy it in a sale.
