June 2025
In the vast minefield of roguelites and arcade shooters, BORE BLASTERS blasts its way into the spotlight with a quirky concept and pixel-perfect execution. Developed by indie studio 8BitSkull, this game is equal parts mining, mayhem, and mechanical mastery. At its core, BORE BLASTERS is a frantic, twin-stick shooter where you pilot a heavily armed drill-copter straight down into the earth. Your mission? Carve your way through layers of rock, harvest precious gems, and survive waves of underground threats. It’s a fast-paced loop that perfectly balances chaos and control. Each run is procedurally generated and only lasts a few minutes—short enough to keep things snappy, but packed with tension. The deeper you go, the tougher the enemies and terrain, forcing you to adapt on the fly with quick upgrades and split-second decisions. Visually, the game’s retro pixel art shines. Environments are colorful, destructible, and delightfully animated. Enemy designs are varied, from angry mole-bots to lava-dwelling horrors, all backed by a punchy synth soundtrack that keeps your adrenaline spiking. Sound effects are crisp and satisfying. Each gem ping and explosion lands with weight, giving you constant feedback without overwhelming the action. Between runs, you’ll use collected gems to upgrade your gyrocopter with stronger weapons, faster drills, and cooler abilities. This meta-progression keeps the game feeling fresh even after dozens of dives. Still, the progression can feel grindy after a while. With no overarching narrative or campaign, motivation depends entirely on your love for the core loop—which, fortunately, is extremely fun. BORE BLASTERS doesn’t pretend to be more than it is—and that’s its strength. It’s a pick-up-and-play adrenaline rush with bite-sized runs, clever enemy design, and just enough upgrade depth to keep you coming back. If you enjoy roguelites, drilling mechanics, or twin-stick chaos, this one’s a gem. Pros: -Addictive arcade gameplay loop -Crisp, charming pixel visuals -Short, high-intensity runs perfect for quick sessions -Satisfying upgrades and unlocks Cons: -Can feel repetitive in long bursts -Light on story and world-building Rating: 8/10

A fun little time sink - just be aware if you are a completionist that the 100% achievement will be a bit of a slog like in many games of this type.

Sideways thumb. It's missing something for me to really care and get invested in it, but it's pretty easy to load it up and play through a few stages and have fun.

I really enjoy Bore Blasters. I just wish that the main quest was a bit longer & more involved. Its definitely a fun game to pick & play. One of the things I like is that its simplistic to where almost anyone can pick up & play. The object is to start at the top & blast your way to the bottom check point. Occasionally, you'll have to perform tasks such as finding certain types of blocks, destroying certain types of enemies, etc. but the end objective is still the same. There are also various temporary power ups that you can earn as well. These help your vehicle function much better. In addition to that, you can also buy permanent power ups. While these are helpful, you can't buy everything in the shop. One that I wish you could purchase were the gem shards. Anytime you destroy a gem stone, its sends shards all around, damaging enemies & taking out surrounding blocks. I would love to see some additional content added. I also hope it gets ported to consoles. Aside from being shorter than I would like, Its not a bad & worth buying. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a solid 8.5.

Do you yearn for the mines? Do you like the idea of blasting through layers of rock and dirt? Then this might be for you! Funnily enough, I wouldn't say this game breaks any new ground. There isn't anything overly complex about it: fly around, dig, collect gems, acquire upgrades, repeat. But I'd say it does this pretty well. Collecting the piles of gems is very satisfying, and for the most part, the game doesn't overstay its welcome. Now, the story is alright, and the runs can feel a bit repetitive near the end once you have an idea of what upgrades synergize the best, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. When to buy?
