Sept. 2025
Bosorka, developed and published by Sengi Games, is a fast-paced roguelike action shooter that places players in the enchanted boots of Horpyna, a young witch who has unintentionally unleashed chaos upon the world. The premise is rooted in a dark, whimsical take on Slavic folklore, where Horpyna's magical experiment with a cursed grimoire goes horribly wrong, opening portals to demonic dimensions. In order to undo her mistake, she must traverse procedurally generated battlegrounds filled with hostile creatures, all while flying on a magical broomstick and wielding an arsenal of elemental spells. The game’s core loop revolves around run-based progression. Each run begins with the player choosing a broom, each with different movement characteristics and starting spells. From there, Horpyna flies through randomly assembled levels, blasting enemies, dodging projectiles, and collecting magical runes that modify or enhance her abilities. The level design is tight and often challenging, demanding quick reflexes and careful planning. Biomes vary in visual style and enemy composition, giving each zone a distinctive feel. Hidden areas and secret passages add an exploratory layer that rewards players willing to poke around the edges of each map. Combat in Bosorka is both satisfying and intense. Spellcasting is snappy, and each rune pickup has the potential to change how a spell behaves—adding area damage, altering its trajectory, or imbuing it with elemental effects like fire, ice, or lightning. Combining different runes with specific spells or brooms creates synergies that can turn an average run into a powerful one. The variety in spell customization is where the game shines the most, encouraging experimentation. Over time, players can unlock new brooms, spells, and passives, which keeps the progression engaging even after multiple deaths. What makes Bosorka stand out among indie roguelikes is its style and atmosphere. Visually, the game adopts a stylized gothic aesthetic, using low-poly models and dark palettes to create a world that feels eerie but never drab. The environments evoke ruined temples, haunted woods, and other supernatural locales, all tinged with a folklore-inspired surrealism. Enemy designs are similarly creative, blending grotesque, demonic forms with cartoonish exaggeration. The sound design complements the visual tone well—haunting music plays softly in the background, while spell effects and monster groans provide the chaos you'd expect in a bullet-hell-lite experience. The game’s difficulty curve is noticeable but manageable. Early runs may feel brutal, especially as players get accustomed to the twitchy flight mechanics and enemy behaviors, but persistence is rewarded. The roguelike structure means death is inevitable, but each run contributes to your overall understanding of the game’s systems. Boss fights punctuate each biome and are some of the highlights of the experience, often requiring pattern recognition, positioning, and quick adaptation. Despite its indie scale, the challenge feels fair, with most deaths resulting from player error or poor preparation rather than cheap design. That said, Bosorka isn’t without its flaws. One of the more noticeable limitations is a lack of overall content depth once the initial novelty wears off. While the spell combinations and brooms do offer some replay value, the number of distinct biomes and enemies is relatively modest. After a dozen or so runs, repetition begins to set in, especially for players who are used to the deep progression trees and massive content pools of more established roguelikes. Balance can also be inconsistent—some brooms and rune combinations are clearly more effective than others, leading to runs that feel dramatically easier or harder based on early RNG. The UI and tutorialization could use some polish as well. While the mechanics are not overly complex, certain elements—like how rune combinations interact or how to access secret rooms—are not always explained clearly. This leads to some trial-and-error moments that may frustrate players unfamiliar with roguelike conventions. Additionally, while the game does support full controller functionality and performs well on Steam Deck, some interface elements feel a bit clunky on smaller screens or when navigating upgrade menus quickly. Despite these issues, Bosorka offers a compelling, compact roguelike experience with a distinct voice and style. It’s a game that understands its strengths and leans into them: fast, magical combat; experimental spellcraft; and the high-risk, high-reward thrill of roguelike progression. Its unique take on witch mythology and the use of a broomstick as a core movement mechanic give it a fresh identity in a crowded genre. For players who enjoy games like Nuclear Throne or Wizard of Legend, Bosorka provides a similarly frantic pace with a folkloric twist. Overall, Bosorka is a solid addition to the indie roguelike library. It may not revolutionize the genre, but it executes its vision with charm, style, and enough mechanical depth to keep players coming back for more. It’s particularly worth trying for those who enjoy challenging action games with magical flair, or who are looking for a budget-friendly title that offers tight gameplay and atmospheric world-building. With further updates or content additions, Bosorka could evolve into a cult favorite—but even in its current form, it delivers a satisfying and memorable ride. Rating: 8/10

Firstly, the developer is actively interested in supporting Linux, which is huge to me. The game itself is quite fun, even if I'm finding it difficult. There is meta progression in unlocking new brooms with different starting effects, but other than that, much of the game does rely on the player getting better, which I really appreciate. Would recommend others at least try it if a bullet-hell-inspired roguelite sounds interesting to you
