everytime I launch the game, its like I just ate a rainbow mushroom from a psychedelic forest that makes u gay n high. if anyone wants to feel similar to that, u should play this game!! its fun to learn, the art style is adorable, the dev updates a ton, etcccc!! its so yummy I love it!! there is no male characters in this game, everybody is a girl. literally a lesbians DREAM I love being surrounded by cute alien monster girls!! I mean, who doesnt... you would be crazy not to. the premise of the game is just so precious. its similar to adopting honeylambs, if anyone knows what that is. basically u show the monsters, which are kinda like cursed spirits from jjk, love!! so after u show them love, they stop feeling the negative emotions n theyre saved!! n as a thank you, they give you gifts after each fight. theres so much to do, it makes my head spin but in a not painful n really good way. I think theres something around 750 achievements, which is absolutely crazy but intriguing since it makes me wanna get them all!! I love rogue like games because u can do so many different playthroughs n still have more to experience. this is def like that. theres over 100+ different monsters, 400+ gifts, etc etc. for reference u only encounter around 8 monsters each playthrough. gifts are a similar amount. this game is just so fun, I wouldve never guessed it was in early access because its already so good. now, imagine what its gonna be like when it starts developing more n more!! im so hyped to see what more they will add. I cant believe there was a time i was questioning whether I would like this game because now that ive played it, ill never stop. im gonna keep playing this game forever n ever n ever n ever n ever n ever n ever n ever n ever
This is quite a special game. The Void Rains Upon Her Heart has become possibly one of my favorite games, and it is for more reasons than are immediately obvious by looking at it. Although the more obvious reasons are relevant too, and it might be more fitting to begin my review with these. --- The game is a combination bullet hell shmup and roguelike. These on their own are genres that I can be a bit into, but not especially. I would say that I personally bounce off of the majority of roguelikes that I play. The combination of the two that The Void Rains achieves, however, is deeply satisfying. The bullet hell- usually regarded as a brutally tough genre- is actually quite approachable in its lower difficulties without foregoing the higher ones, and gives you plenty of free choice in where your time is spent. The moment-to-moment gameplay is very fun, I find myself rarely tiring of the same bullet pattern, perhaps because there is simply such a big range of patterns that the game throws at you. The roguelike elements are more satisfying than I would have expected. I am not entirely sure I can pin down what it is about them that just works, but I feel repeatedly satisfied each time my run gets gradually more powerful as it progresses. Some roguelikes have a tendency of feeling punishing for the sake of it. You didn't pick the right upgrades, or you just got unlucky. This feels like it's so rarely the case in The Void Rains. I won't claim it doesn't happen ever, but it feels more often than not I am not losing my run to factors out of my control. Though it's a case of personal preference, I would like to note that I really enjoy the game's graphical style. The pixel art feels a bit... quaint, or intimate if that makes sense? The backgrounds are very colorful and pretty. The music has also really grown on me, the shambles and glass flowers have my personal favorite tracks. --- So, the game is good. Very well accomplishing those things it sets out to do. But what sets it truly apart, in my opinion? The Void Rains Upon Her Heart is a story about love. It's also a story about other things, including among others themes such as trauma, disability and stigma. Each monster you face is afraid, it's the reason why they fight. Your goal is not to fight them, but instead their fear. Once fear is broken, love can bloom. I have found that the game very liberally extends this same grace to the player. There are a lot of ways that I feel this, and they aren't all easy to explain. It's in the way the game is gracious towards the player in its designs. It's in the way that a story is told in a very queer manner, unapologetic and unbothered. It's in the way that many monsters are portrayed to carry their own traumas, the way love is not always easy and sometimes quite hurts. It's in the way that the game tells you it's okay to fail, and it's in the way that the game quite literally tells you to go drink water. I feel quite strongly about a specific encounter that I would not want to spoil in a review for the game. Regardless, this game makes me too feel loved, in a way that is unlike any other game I have experienced. The themes strongly resonate with me. Maybe they don't strongly resonate with you, that is possible and fine. I don't think that they have to strongly resonate in order for the game to draw you in with its open-mindedness. We can all use a hug, sometimes. If you're on the fence, if you're not sure that this game is really for you, I hope that I am able to convince you to give it a try. I think this game is quite special.
Bullet Hell game with interesting story and lore. I think the most important thing to note about this game isn't that it's just well designed or dripping with flavor. I think one of my favorite parts of this game is the feedback loop. The way things unlock, the tuning of the tetrid grinding, and the ease of being able to reset and the duration of runs makes everything feel really satisfying to play and learn. A big problem with bullethells is how bad it feels to mess up once and losing all that progress. While that's baked into the higher difficulties, this one just generally feels a lot more approachable (and you can get whatever experience however you want) in the lower difficulties, and that just feels good. I enjoyed it, and I'm actually quite interested in seeing the story and lore, and hope it's not locked behind insane difficulties.
When I first look at the reviews for this game and they mentioned an "Isaac-style progression", they were not lying, The more you unlock, the more there is to unlock, the fact that this game is still in early access, has about 700+ achievements (and therefore unlocks) and that there it feels like there is no end to the content is wild. I've "only" spent around 40 hours and I feel like I've only scratched the surface. It's very addictive and has become a nice game to just relax and have fun with. I don't know who I'd recommend this game for, but there is so much to love here that I don't know who I *wouldn't* recommend it for, rather.
i don't think there's any game out there that you can really call a 10/10, it does not exist. maybe the controls are a little bit too slippery or the camera is a little bit too wonky, or maybe the gameplay is a little too easy or hard. yet, i would be glad to say that this game probably comes the closest to it. if i had to rate it earnestly, i would give it a 9.8/10. there are some problems sure, but this is natural when it comes to early access stuff. keep in mind however that this game has probably 5x the content of some fully finished and released games out there. the very few flaws i would note down at the time are the following. these are spoilery and are intended for the developer mostly, but you can read them if you wish: - the alter twin character doesn't feel very good to play; it can be tiring holding down the charge button all the time to attack, and the laser beam itself doesn't feel like it does enough damage. i understand that it does piercing damage but sometimes you don't want that for certain monsters (even if you can often choose which one you want to fight.) however, there are settings to change the way that your charge attack fires, like changing the input style or whether it is automatic, and the character has a familiar focused build that is able to get a thin selection of gifts, which helps to combat rng somewhat, not that it needs to be combatted very much because the gifts are immaculately balanced in this game already. i suppose this character is in here to introduce variety in the end, but this is likely my least favorite. - the alter defect in the endless nightmares gamemode is really tough because you are encouraged to save karma over long periods of time to enhance your shopping experience, but as a side effect you are spending a long time in each boss battle because of your low damage output from trying to save karma. this causes you to lose hp a lot and get left in a very dangerous threshold where one hit can kill you, quite often. also, their starting gift contributes a TON to your power rating which makes shopping even more difficult. i wouldn't call the alter defect a challenge character typically, because their starting gifts in other gamemodes are really good, but here they feel like they lag behind other characters by a lot. if you have chosen not to read those spoilers and think those big walls of hidden text are really bad, then i can tell you they are not that bad at all, i just like to go into detail about small things a lot. the reason im not saying much positive stuff is because i know that, with a 99% all time overwhelmingly positive review rate, there have been thousands of people who have said how much they love each and every mechanic 10x over, and i agree with all of them. also one last thing i would want to say is that, although it can be a bit tough to recommend this game because of certain ways the story presents itself, i think that if you give the game an honest try, then you will find it has some important things to say about loving yourself, loving others and never giving up in your darkest hour. i appreciate games that do this because the outside world right now is in a bad state as everyone knows, so it is nice to get affirmation to keep going in these trying times, and to be a better person to those around you. also the one REALLY last thing i want to say is this game goes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HARD on the steam deck, it is the perfect game for it!!!
