Besides the odd few puzzle with little to none proper explanation this may be the first puzzle game I properly played, no big cheating, maybe a good sign for myself personally but it's also a good sign for this game. Johnathon Blow is clearly a controversial figure, but to let that ruin a game for you is dumb, to find an art piece lesser because you think its author is too high and mighty about it is also dumb as your experience and theirs will never be the same. It's a strange experience but the puzzles themselves leave me feeling near entirely greatly accomplished and there's a subtle profundity or sense the game has been designed to spin itself on its head for certain puzzles, a meta aspect to them. The plot is curious, the writing is genuinely exceptional in terms of language and an entire book written as such would be in my interest indeed. The strange balance between game and story being not entirely told to you and leaving itself to be unfinished in order for you to finish it yourself, that being perhaps a theme of the game, is the strongest aspect. The graphical spin, a kind of other worldly Mario game, with this depth and hand painted style is another highlight and the soundtrack is equally built to perfection. Besides a general shortness and puzzles being lacking or annoying I still think this games willingness to breed curiosity in not just the puzzles make it a staple of the puzzle genre. 8/10

Fun game. Good levels. Good graphics. Good music. Must collect all collectibles to see ending, but the game is short enough it's worthwhile to do. Some of the story is overwritten, but the jist of the plot is a good subversion of Mario.

There isn't a lot of games like Braid. On the surface; it's a puzzle platformer with a unique rewind mechanic. It's filled with a lot of little eureka moments and is perfect for anyone that wants to get into that genre more. I've played this game through again for the 3rd or 4th time now. Either my intrinsic familiarity with games leads me to play with little resistance, or those playthroughs, distant in some years apart, lead me to remember each solution. Every key and locked door. It all clicked in place. Now that I'm older, I see this game differently. There's a puzzle to the meaning of this work. With time we grow old and look back on what we could've done differently. We make mistakes that we can't undo. They haunt us into an obsession until we lose ourselves. There's a loose connection to the game's art and mechanics, and how it connects to the story. In all the games I've played and media I've enjoyed, it's rare for a game to feel more sentimental and introspective. I understood each puzzle, but it never clicked before that there was more to the game than the sum of its parts. Its physics, mechanics, objectives. It felt like there was something more that I didn't understand before, and yet I'm still left with questions. I recommend this game to people interested in puzzle games, nostalgic fans of the former Xbox Live Arcade line-up of titles, speedrunners and general audiences. Side note to speedrunners specifically: this game kind of has bunny-hopping and momentum conservation. Try jumping at the edge of a solid platform down a ramp (or in other words some might understand: perform an "edgebug"). It's fun!

I first learned of Braid from the “Mario is too Mainstream” sketch by Dorkly. It didn’t color my opinion because I unsubbed from Dorkly years ago when they started pushing “Kevin the Assistant,” but when I read some of the flowery language used in the lore dumps, I was worried that maybe they had a point when they made Braid out to be pretentious Mario. However, Dorkly was too busy projecting their own smugness onto the game and equating inspiration with copying to stick any real jabs to Braid. That isn’t to say Braid isn’t a little smug. The writing is self-indulgent, the twist is telegraphed so early that it doesn’t come as much of a shock, as the possibility had been planted in my head from the start. As subversive as it once was, it feels its age, considering what it’s deconstructing (Super Mario Bros.) and how it characterizes its protagonist (romantic, melancholic, probably alcoholic). It’s not unintelligent, it has something important to say, it’s just little on the nose and navel-gazy, outdone in narratology by countless successors in the indie scene it helped shape. The presentation is generally good. The painterly graphics are nice and colorful, but occasionally get a bit cluttered with some of the puzzle layouts. The music is peaceful and unobtrusive, while the sound effects are… odd. The not-Goombas sound like ordinary guys and jumping on enemies sounds like an elastic band, but what really got me were the turtle-bunnies’ annoying stock cat noises, and the “strum” death sound effect makes me think of the Taco Bell “bong” for some reason. I think it’s the rewind reverb. Ultimately, it’s the puzzles that really make the game worthwhile. The platforming is a bit underwhelming, and the game doesn’t make the most out of all of its mechanics, but the rewind ability and the other effects surrounding it are really fun to play with, and the puzzles are rewarding to figure out. The last level, though it didn’t shock me from a narrative standpoint, also played fantastically. The rougher elements might make you want to wait for a sale, or maybe consider checking out the anniversary edition; I don’t know how improved it is. Considering how it's aged, I can't say Braid is a masterpiece, but I'd say it's still worth playing after almost two decades.

Braid is an indie game puzzle platformer with the emphasis on the manipulation of time. The narrative is thought-provoking and focuses on themes of regret and undoing the past. Visually the game has a unique and beautiful art style with detailed and bright landscapes to navigate through. Braid's soundtrack is its strongest attribute, complimenting the levels perfectly. The track "Downstream" may be one of my favourites of all time.
