I've been playing games for 50 years. I've play tested games on Steam and left advice for those developers that was taken into consideration. Some of those games were made by one person. Those games made by one person were vastly worse than Brutal John 2. The gameplay is tight, the level design is good, the mentioned 90s (or rather early 2020s) humour is entertaining with a few minor things that are cringe: Seeing a certain someone crushed by gears in a bin + a well timed quip by the main character is peak, while directly verbatim have him say Duke Nukem lines is cringemaxxing. The team should be more proud&confident about their own humour, because they have the essence figured out. Otherwise the Key Features are explained well on the store page, if you're intrigued by this game. I fully recommend getting it.
This game is a silly parody of popular 90's shooters, mostly Duke3d. It's worth the $10. All the typical tropes are here. Barely coherent story. Dumb manly man hero. Overpowered weapons. Bunnyhopping. Secrets. Interactive environments. Exploding barrels. 90's game references. Serious Sam levels of ammo/health/armor right before over the top ridiculous boss fights. Remember to not take this game seriously and you'll have a good time. As an example the name itself is a joke. There was never a "Brutal John 1". "Brutal John 2" is this same game renamed to "2" during early access. I'm hoping they rename the game to "Brutal John 3" when the full release goes live just to mess with people more. This is they type of humor the devs have and I love it! In the final spaceship level be sure to enter the DO NOT ENTER door for a surprise guest appearance lmao. I also love the addition of "The Vault" which unlocks after the main campaign. You can listen to the OST from inside the game in the vault (many 90's games such as the first C&C and Redneck Rampage had interactive music players built into the game!) in a recreation of an old interactive cd-rom running on Windows 95.
The world needs more Duke likes; highly interactive levels loaded with secrets, colorful old school graphics, and cheesy adult humor with a bit of testosterone thrown in. As soon as I seen gameplay on a gmanlives YT video I wanted to play it and it doesn't disappoint. Like BrutalZlim, the game deserves more attention. You may want to reconfigure the controls. IGNORE THE "2" IN THE NAME. IT'S JUST A JOKE. THERE IS NO BRUTAL JOHN 1 (yet) A very underrated retro shooter. I don't know how games half its quality are seeing success while this one is going unnoticed. First of all the game is extremely polished. Everything works beautifully and the usual clunkiness of an EA title is nonexistent. It's impressive how the developers were managed to fill the levels with new and fun content again and again. Speaking of levels, they are pretty varied and I especially liked the urban settings. Shooting feels fun, weapons are punchy, gibs are flying. Basically everything you would expect from a game like this is here and works nicely. There are well done cutscenes, driving sections, many arcade games and much more. Long story short, the game is pretty good gameplay-wise. Next, it's pretty funny. The tone, story, and cutscenes combined with the cherry on top that is the cast's accents make everything hilarious, and I very rarely laugh at any media. I wouldn't even mention the humor as a point if it weren't one of the main draws for me. Finally, the references are very smart. With these games we usually see what, a nod to Doom or a hidden dopefish somewhere in the level right? While Brutal John also has dopefishes sprinkled everywhere (seriously, he's everywhere) there are also very smart and sometimes biting commentary. Finding Duke's corpse crushed by gears and later getting a call from Duke whose apparently looking for his lost balls are just two examples. I would give more examples, but half the fun comes from discovering these on your own. I really hope the developers will continue adding more of these as more levels get released. And I know the devs are real FPS fans, because not many would add Gus the Miner to their game as an easter egg. I doubt many will even know who that is. Overall I enjoyed the game very much. I wish the developers good luck with the project.
