First things first: I’m not a real-life hunter. I’ve only played theHunter Classic, Call of the Wild, and Way of the Hunter. Now to the review. I’m impressed. Like, seriously impressed. The first few hours were the toughest hunting experience I’ve ever had in a video game. At first I struggled a lot, so I decided to dig deeper and learn more about the game. I found out that it aims to be very realistic, so I did something I’ve never had to do for any other game before: I studied real-life duck hunting. Yes, really. I learned how ducks behave, how decoys work, why wind direction matters, and many other things. It took some time, but I genuinely enjoyed the process. Then I booted up the game and applied what I had learned, and holy DUCK, it worked. Every real-life tip actually worked in-game. I started having successful hunts, and now I’m completely obsessed with this game. There are a few more things I really want to mention because they deserve it: The sound design is incredible. It genuinely feels like you’re there. Every animal, even the smallest ones, has a proper model, even insects. You can hear a mosquito buzzing and actually see it, which is something most games don’t bother with. The world feels like a living ecosystem. You can see seagulls hunting fish, beavers moving around lakes, and much more. The level of detail the developers put into this game is huge, like, really huge. It also has the best decoy-calling system I’ve ever seen in a hunting game. There’s a mini-game where you have to time your clicks properly so the call sounds natural. It’s an amazing idea and works incredibly well. This isn’t just a hunting game, it’s also partly a survival game. You can freeze, you can overheat, and your clothing actually matters. All of this directly affects your hunting. Did you step into cold water and start freezing? Good luck aiming your shot. You’d better head back to your cabin, chop some wood, start a fire, and dry yourself. Or you can just restart the game, the choice is yours. Like I said, I’m very impressed. I know the game is still in alpha or beta or whatever, but for 10 euros? Come on. It’s more polished than most AAA games. I’m really excited to see what comes next. I heard dogs might be added, and with the level of detail these developers put into the game, it could easily become the best hunting dog system on the market. Period. Of course, there are some bugs, so keep in mind that the game is still in development. For example, there’s no cloud save for now, so you should back up your save files just in case. There are also a few in-game bugs, but nothing game-breaking in my experience. Keep in mind that this game is not for you if you want nonstop action or run-and-gun gameplay like in Call of the Wild. But it is absolutely for you if you enjoy theHunter Classic or slow-paced, realistic hunting. I probably forgot to mention a lot of things, but I can 100% recommend this game to anyone looking for a truly realistic hunting experience.

my sock is wet, i'm shivering, the sun is in my eyes, it took 2 hours to kill 3 birds, and it took 3 shells to kill one of them. 10/10 waterfowl experience

This game is difficult, and will not hold your hand at all. You'll need to figure out a lot of stuff on your own, which I'm personally a fan of! Some tips for new players: Don't be the guy complaining that you haven't seen ducks for two hours, because you've been running around the map like a chicken with its head cut off! Focus on the water! There is a lake directly to the left of the starting camp, that has a canoe, and normally has a lot of ducks (some hunts wont yield much, but thats ok, you can just start a new hunt if you're having little success). If you travel directly east for a long ways, you'll find an abandoned shack that has some cow bones inside. There is also a canoe next to this shack. Take it out to the giant lake, and paddle around, you WILL find ducks! I also reccomend hunting during spring when you can, as i have personally found more ducks during spring than autumn. Be VERY careful, though! Not only is it much colder then autumn, but you will also encounter baikal teal, which carry a heavy fine if you shoot! Make sure to listen for their distinct 'shooping' calls before you fire away! And one last thing: Early morning is my go to hunting time! preferably starting at 6-7! ***Jan 8th EDIT*** This early access is three pieces short of being brilliant. I’m torn as it is so close to being worth the two copies I own on two separate platforms. I don’t want to leave a bad review because for the price of two soft drinks, you could help the game become something. So I don’t want to discourage people from getting it in early access. That said I don’t want to leave a too positive of a review because it needs to be fixed right fast and in a hurry before player playit and never come back like what happened to Way of the Hunter. It is a beautiful game and you can tell the team are hunters or at least understand hunting. The way they added little things like the bird sounds in the bio of each species is BRILLIANT. I do feel they don’t understand gaming though. Game designers have to walk that fine line between giving the player too much that a sim becomes an arcade, but the player does need enough extras in a sim to account for the fact that we don’t have all our senses that IRL hunting requires. On the later this is a failure thus far. I have reset my progress over seven times due to this. I appreciate the Tarkov like punishment for failure of a Bet Hunt, but give us a fighting chance at least. You can't really afford to lose currency due to the things like calls being so vital to success so resetting is needed to get back currency you lost becasue you couldn't tell your distance to a bird, the wind direction, or etc. if it was just poor planning I could except a loss, but you can't plan and exucute when you don't have the tools needed. I’ve seen more close ups of mosquitoes than ducks. And I like the mosquitoes it adds to the game. Any IRL hunter has experienced and over come these pests while trying to concentrate of getting game. Like I said they are either hunters or really understadn hunting. We need the following and I go from Luke Warm to Red Hot for this games. 1. Range Finder or guide of ranges. By guide I mean, tell us that if you can see a duck but not make out what species or sex it is then you are 75-100m. If you can see colours you are 50m. If you can make out the species you are under 35m. But it is impossible to gauge distance without an edge to make up for the loss of 3D Depth. 2. We need GPS and or wind gauge. You can guess that the top of the map is North but when the Camo Net moves in the same direction everytime and the weeds and grasses are pretty much the same, GPS or a wind checker is needed. I have hunted ducks for over 40 years and I know you have to be up wind but the fact we can't confirm this as the visuals are the same no matter what the wind is a bit upsetting. I like the stripped down Sim feel to this game but it is taken too far. These days almost every state and federal hunting regulation requires a GPS device so give us something. I love the fact that there is no real HUD which adds to the Sim feel, but we should be able to toggle a device or pull out a cheap wind checker. Come on the fact that nothing exists make it feel like the developer is trying to make a point that this is a Sim and not an arcade, This point is further made in the lodge where you can put things down and have to move in a direction to get out of the clock, map, and etc. actions. 3. We need some sort of identification/tracking marker or a retriever. I have shot things, but I couldn’t find it because we are not awarded any extra help which as i mentioned seems like a lack of understanding gaming not a lack of understanding hunting. IRL Hunting involves losing game and anyone that has done this understands that. But as previously mentioned it feels like these developers are punishing the player because they are deadset on proving the Sim vs Arcade point and not understanding the fact that real life senses can't be Simulated and need some coding to bring something extra to the player. The other thing is you have no idea you "Saw" or didn’t see a duck. I found 8-12 on the water during one go but when I left the hunt it said I only “Saw” 4. There is nothing in the game to indicated if you saw them. I have sat for 2 hours (in game time) glassing to come out and have the after hunter report say I "Saw" less than a 1/4 of the birds I just glassed for hours. That’s where IRL senses need a bit of help in a Sim. I will keep playing and I will keep supporting this title, I just hope they fix these things before we lose some of the hunting audience for good. There are far too many titles coming up to lose support for what is an amazing concept, absolutely beautiful production, and possibly the best sim in years. Learn from THe Hunting Sim 2 and Way of the Hunter and fix these things now before you lose support and can't justify putting anything into the title as you don't have the players to make it worth the while. I will chose a Hard Sim over the four initial Arcade Hunter that everyone loves, but don’t punish us too hard in the name of NOT being an Arcade. *** Edit on the Boat Mechanic*** Once you figure out that if you have forward momentum the Left (A) and Right (D) steer controls are actually pretty efficent. They work amazing in reverse no matter if you have momentum or not, but going forward it's nearly impossible to change direction. In most cases you could paddle forward and then steer but if you are near a bank or trying to creep up on ducks and inching forward you have no chance to steer in the direction you need. All that said once you get out on the lakes and navigate through the streams, the canoeing is the best part of this game after the visuals. My last few goes at this before I have now given up were actually quite pleasant and stress free as I just paddled around for hours. I kayak and paddleboard quite a bit so either I am doing it wrong as I have more dynamic steer control when I am barely moving than I do when I am at speed, ore they missed the boat a bit on this mechanic. Pun intended. Gun to my head I give this a 51% rating and recommend it becasue it has so damn much potential, but a few small tweaks and it is a 99/100 and the best thing for hunting since the firearm. Please support it so we IRL hunters can have a sim worth being put in the Hunting Genre!
