Good value. Many great beat-em-ups for not a whole lotta coin. And a whole lotta coin is what you'd spend in an arcade to beat these. Yikes. Unfair reach granted to enemies that overwhelmingly outnumber you are par for the course in this style of game. Thank goodness for infinite continues in this collection. Thank Capcom, for intense, frantic, fun.
A compilation of classic beat em up games. In the early 90s this was the strongest game genre in the arcades. Most of the successful games were either these, or made by rival company Konami. Final Fight more or less popularized it, with its classical city taken by thugs themes and the mayor himself stepping in to solve the violence problem by beating everyone. The seven games included are not exactly the same with different setting and graphics, but they all work around the same ideas. Jump, attack, special attack, maybe dash and maybe ride a horse, reach the level boss, move on to the next level. They are fun in general, with some being too unforgiving or generic. Remember that all these were originally released in arcades, so balance was not part of the design. The games expect you to keep putting coins to progress. Every game can be beaten in around 40 to 1 hour each. It's mindless repetitive to play them all back to back so better find one you like and get some friends to play it on multiplayer. Every game works, they sound great, the hits connect and some characters even have crude voices. On the negative side, these are not even the best Capcom beat em ups. Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and the Dungeon & Dragons games are totally missing here, a huge omission and a missed opportunity. They also skipped console ports and console excusive sequels, like Final Fight 2 and 3. For this price, only recommended for fans of these games who want to play online with a friend. Otherwise skip completely.
Unlike other collections of retro arcade games that I have, [I]Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle[/I] evokes the least nostalgia in me. Of the seven games in the collection, I only recall playing one of them, that being [I]Final Fight[/I]. Even then, I’ve played more [I]Final Fight[/I] on the Super Nintendo than at the arcade. This game collection highlights how cookie-cutter Capcom’s belt-scroll beat ’em up titles were. Built upon the design template that originated with [I]Final Fight[/I], all seven games play similarly – with one button for attack, one button for jump, and pressing both to execute a special move that drains your health bar. They differ in themes and the ultimately insignificant stories, so it’s likely that you’ll find at least one game in this collection that will appeal to you. [I]Final Fight[/I] is the contemporary urban brawler set in Metro City, and [I]Captain Commando[/I] is the spiritual successor with a sci-fi twist on the same setting. These are probably the least interesting games of the bunch. [I]The King of Dragons[/I] and [I]Knights of the Round[/I] are medieval-themed beat ’em ups, with the former based on fantasy tabletop games, and the latter on the legend of King Arthur and the Knight of the Round Table. Both feature a level advancement system, weapon/armour upgrades, and defensive move. [I]Warriors of Fate[/I] is the East Asian-themed brawler inspired by China’s Three Kingdom Period. Although the Japanese version retained the Three Kingdoms story and characters, the English localization changed character names to those of Mongolian historical figures for some reason. I found [I]Armored Warriors[/I] and [I]Battle Circuit[/I] to be the most memorable titles in the collection. [I]Armored Warriors[/I] is a mecha-themed brawler that features combat robots that can swap out their parts for more advanced weaponry; [I]Battle Circuit[/I] is a sci-fi comic book-themed brawler, in which the playable bounty hunters can use money that they have collected to purchase new abilities. These arcade games were designed to be difficult and unfair to bleed you dry of coins and tokens you would have had in your possession. As mediocre as [I]Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle[/I] is, it is attractively priced even when it’s not on sale. At about 20 USD typically, it comes down to less than 3 USD per game. If you consider how much money or how many tokens you would have spent on playing these games at the arcade back in the day, it’s really a steal! However, there are Capcom beat ’em up games missing from this collected works. While games like [I]Alien vs. Predator[/I], [I]Cadillacs and Dinosaurs[/I], and the [I]Dungeons & Dragons[/I] titles are understandably absent likely due to licencing restrictions, [I]Dynasty Wars[/I] should have been featured alongside [I]Warriors of Fate[/I], and [I]Final Fight 2[/I] and [I]3[/I] should have been included. Still, if you enjoy beat ’em up games, this attractively priced compilation should unquestionably be in your PC game collection.
