The title of this game tells you 99% of what it is. it's chess in the form of playing with animated cat pieces with various skins that have unique capture animations depending on which piece is capturing which. It is similar to that of the old battle chess. This is one of those we need a middle thumb options. There are two types of people that should NOT buy this game: 1. People who like cats but dislike chess. 2. People who like chess but dislike cats. This game is neither going to be the best chess game with the most options you ever played as a chess aficionado or provide the fix for a crazy old cat lady who needs the real comforts of a live feline. That said, if you like chess and adore cats as well. This is the novelty game for you. And a novelty is how you should treat it. This is not a game for people looking for tons of player vs. player options. There doesn't even seem to be resign and draw buttons (unless I missed this somewhere) and there are no sense of time controls at all, just a clock which ticks up endlessly (not down like the usual clock). Simply put, this game is built for friendly chess, and if you know anything about how uncivil and monstrous people can be online when they can't be punched from 3 feet away then you'll realize real quick without time controls precisely how online play will typically go. You will either lose or reach a winning position wherein the majority of people will just refuse to move/stall until you quit. So, don't consider this your serious replacement for chess.com, lichess, FICS, or whatever else you play on. Secondly, if you are a decent player such as myself (I am 1600+ ELO on chess.com and during my prime many years ago 1950 ELO peak) don't expect the campaign (which is as some others pointed out 10 levels that don't seem to exceed maybe 1000 ELO at max) to provide you any challenge. There is a PVE section of the game though where you can set the bot upwards of 3000 ELO or so and get destroyed whenever you feel like it (so it is capable of challenging you outside of that). That said, we all know how (not) fun playing bots is to begin with. I decided to leave this review a positive one despite some of these issues because the game delivers essentially what it says it does. Sure, id argue outside of the cuteness factor it is barebones to say the least, but its cat pieces in chess. Its adorable and I do enjoy it (as well as the classical music included). ---------------------- Some suggestive tips for the developers to make this game more sustainable: Priority - Add a selection of time controls (classical, blitz, and bullet presets, and a custom) Priority - Add the ability to resign (not just leaving) or offer a draw Secondary - Add an ability to export PGN or some format of games played just after a game Tertiary - Add ability to look back/forward through the move list of an active game
Update 07/15/2026: Ok, so the AI in this game is some of the worst I've seen in a chess game. On level three or four, all the AI would do is jump out the left knight then jump it right back the next turn. It did this for multiple turns. Then, once it jumped and didn't jump back to it's starting position, the left rook just started moving side to side between its position and the knight's original position. Again, for multiple turns. Also, you can pretty much plan for the AI to make the most obvious, but at the same time dumb choices. I've had queens go after pawns when there are multiple other pieces that will take it out once it does. And, it's not as if it's a last ditch effort sort of thing. This happens even if they have lost next to no pieces. It's insanely easy to "trick" enabling you to take a lot of their best pieces early on. I've yet to find any kind of difficultly slider. Maybe it's because I'm playing the campaign and each level is supposed to have an increase in difficulty, but I'm on level six now, and it's just as braindead as level one. The only reason I even stopped playing on level six is because the game glitched out and the only thing I could do was ALT+F4. The game board loaded up, but didn't zoom out to actually start the match. Then it went into fast forward mode, which I could not get out of. When you hit escape it wouldn't let me leave because it said you needed to wait for the animation to finish before you can. So yeah. I'm honestly beginning to think this game might have been made using AI. I'm still not going to set my review to not recommended, but like I said originally, this is mid. Hopefully online will be better. Original Review 07/14/2026: This needs a mid option. I bought the supporter edition of this game. I've played chess for decades off and on. I'm no master or anything, but I like it. One thing this game needs is a hover piece type. I mean, you can't zoom in or pan close enough, and the pieces are, at least for me, kinda tough to tell what their "real equivalent" is. You need to be able to hover over or click on a piece to see what it is. It shows you where you can move when you click on it, but that doesn't really help. I don't want to click on multiple pieces to see what they are. Honestly, outside of pawns an bishops, the pieces aren't easy to quickly determine. Again, this may be a "me" problem, but I honestly feel it is an oversite. I've played a lot of "not chess piece" chess games all the way back to Battle Chess, but this is the only one I find difficult to easily distinguish the pieces. I guess that's my only real complaint. Well, maybe the public domain music, but honestly, most of the time I'll just mute that. I love cats. The first cat I adopted just passed away at the time of this review, so yeah. I'm not going to refund or give this a negative review, but a few QoL improvements would be appreciated. Meow in solidarity
I bought this game with 0 expectations. There were no reviews saying if it was buggy so I just took a chance. I really like this. The graphics are cute, the movement is clean. The game shows where pieces can move so that helps people who are still learning chess. I had a smile on my face the whole game. Granted I played 1 match to check for gameplay and no issues. Will definitely be playing daily. Not sure about the PVP as I dont really know anyone who would play chess so for solo this is really good for now. The AI seems a little off as the opponent king was making wild choices to put themselves in check so I hope with each level there is a little more challenge but not an immediate throw in to hard mode. Its relaxing and the cats make it way more interesting than a regular game of chess. I personally love the graphics. I am so tired of everything needing to be life like. This is such a great art style and it makes the cats look fun. Note: To move the board around is the right mouse button. That took me a minute to figure out. To improve: 1. At the end of a match it has this big graphic that comes up that blocks the whole board with no way to remove. Normally not an issue but it has options where you can drop yarn and the cats will move to it. Cant see with that big "You won" graphic. 2. It would be great to see more interactions with the cats. Like purring when they take an opponents piece or after you win, and maybe a hiss if you loose a piece or the match. After a game if you can pick up the cats or interact with them more. I mean its cats with chess. 3. Make the cursor larger so you can see where it is at. Mine blends in because it defaults to this small size in game. Will see if my settings can help with that. 4. Game idle cat movement. It would be great to see cats have more idle movement. Like if you do not use them they start stretching or other random cat things. Same with if they can interact with each other. You have two pawns side by side and they just start swiping at each other, or one tries to paw at the others tail. There are ways to add so many cool things to make this really stand out. More options: I hope they add more options for cats and boards. Very limited right now. This feels very solid so I hope they actually put time into it, build it out farther and not just run off to the next thing. There is so much potential for neat things to be added. Granted chess isnt for everyone I get that but this game is a great start and they could make it the go to for learning and fun.
I've never understood how to play Chess but this game makes it pretty easy for me to understand because it highlights where each piece can move to. I've been looking forward to this game for a while so I'm glad it came out this summer (and my day off) and I could be of the first to play this game.
