it's a fun game, one that it's limitations feel more like deliberate stylistic choices. you can shoot body parts out of the enemies, cramped small environments lots of 90 degree walls, fake 3D brown textures and punchy weapons. It;s easy to understand why this game have a cult following. Very unique

Chasm: The Rift is an incredibly action packed first person shooter with a variety of badass weapons, hostile enemies, unique level designs, ambient/industrial music and a straightforward story. You simply play as a marine assigned on a dangerous mission to stop the Timestrikers from invading and destroying the planet with the help of a scientist named Strickland but the Time strikers are capable of time-travel which makes them a conniving bunch. The remastered version of the game at least improved it by a notch and it feels playable. This game is worth it in the 90's FPS shooter realm. You can also play the DOS versions as well which is good in my opinion. Overall Rating: 10/10

Chasm is an interesting game in the history of the video gaming industry. It came out in 1997, between the release of Quake in 1996 and Half Life in 1998, and is therefore in the shadows of these games. Being developed in Ukraine by college students, it runs on a custom created engine. Development of the engine began before the release of Quake, meaning that the inspiration came first from the id Tech 1 engine and after the release of Quake, from the id Tech 2 engine. The engine that Chasm runs on is therefore quite weird. It is coded like the 2.5D DooM engine in its level creation but it uses fully 3D models like Quake (instead of sprites). You might think that a sculpture in a level is made in the map editor and is textured afterwards, but no, it is a seperate 3D model that is used there - it is not part of the levels geometry. The maps also aren't very vertical. The height of the map is limited - let's say that if you are jumping on the ground you might jump 1 meter into the air, but on a higher platform it might be like 0.25 meters. So the engine is limited in these regards, but what makes it interesting is the innovations that it has. You can shoot off an arm or a head from an enemy, you can see moving pieces of paper on the desk or the windows moving from the wind etc. The engine is special. Map design is... not good and not bad. The gameplay in these levels is atrocious quite frankly, mainly in the later levels. You have small spaces with bullet-sponge enemies and it isn't fun. You start of one of these levels in a toxic pool or with 4 enemies coming at you and it isn't thrilling. What makes it not bad is the scenery in these levels. Compared to Quake it looks much better. The color pallete isn't as limited as in Quake and you can tell by the more vibrant colors. The first "chapter" is located in a military base, the next in ancient Egypt and the next in a medieval village. It looks almost like Hexen II. Me personally, as someone who likes scenery a bit more than gameplay, I adore it. But you are buying the game, not me... I already have it. Suffice to say, it is an interesting experience and I would definitely recommend it if you are bored.

This is a pretty neat game and kind of underrated game imo. Its like a mixture of Quake 1, Quake 2 and I guess you could say Dusk and Doom. The sound design and the soundtrack are amazing, especially the music which is very atmospheric, the voices for the characters are a little bit rough but forgivable. I love the enemy design and level designs (appearance wise). The game itself is a little challenging because some enemies deal good damage to you or they either swarm you or they appear behind you. *My only complaint are some terrible level designs (gameplay wise), because you can easily get lost. Especially the last levels of the ,,original'' campaign are bulls**t because some enemies are inside monster closet, they teleport right behind you and for the most part deal unavoidable damage, which sucks if you are low on health. Oh and Alien captain is sometimes very annoying to deal with. Not to mention projectile weapons are clunky and if you shoot from cover, the projectile will hit the wall. This can obviously be bad if you use Grenader. Do I still reccomend this game? Yes I do, because even with some rough parts here and there, I still think its a fun game and a blast to play.

Chasm is an interesting experience with neat ideas, and it has a lot of charm. The combat feels good. The weapons are pretty cool. Enemy designs are creative. The art style is really neat, and I love the way it looks and feels. The ambient soundtrack is great and fits the environments you're fighting in. However, this game has some serious issues, and one must think about that before purchasing. The first issue is the price. The people who worked on remastering and porting over Chasm for modern systems did an amazing job. While I get that they need their paycheck, the base game is short, and it has some issues that cheapen the experience. Get this game during a sale. As many may point out, the level design can be a pain in the ass to navigate, sometimes leaving you hunting for a switch in some obscured spot. There are puzzles that don't give you a hint at all and leave you clueless on what to do until you get bored and decide to shoot a certain thing after walking around for several minutes losing your mind. Combat encounters can be cheap, spawning enemies right behind you or around you in tight corridors, leaving you cornered and swiftly reaching for the Quick Load button when you realize that you're stuck. Some of the situations the game will put you in (most notably the level that starts you in a pool of liquid that hurts you and drains your health, just for you to jump to safety and the door closes right in front of you) are pretty damn cheap and can feel disheartening at times. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed Chasm for what it's worth. If you're willing to put up with these issues, I recommend grabbing this game on a sale.
