Aka Manto, stress as an art form ㅤ Aka Manto is a typical Chilla's Art game, taking an urban legend or otherwise distinctly Japanese setting and turning it into a horror experience. Chilla's Art, for me, mostly screams mediocrity. There are a few above average games, but overall, they deliver solid but mediocre horror experiences. ㅤ But not here. With Aka Manto, Chilla's Art created something genuinely exceptional that nails tension like almost no other game. ㅤ The player gets thrown into an unassuming position. A high school student sets out on a dare to explore a school at night, coming face to face with the myth of Aka Manto, a being found in toilets that gives its victims a choice: blue toilet paper or red. No matter the choice, their fate is already sealed. ㅤ And Chilla's Art masterfully builds this concept into a Granny like horror game. You traverse the school, finding objects and slowly making progress as you figure out where to use what. But what elevates the game into masterpiece territory is its tension. It absolutely nails tension. ㅤ At first, it lures the player into a false sense of security that is quickly shattered by the appearance of Aka Manto, announcing itself with an ear piercing scream that sent shivers down my spine. From there on, it's constant stress until the end. No matter where you are or what you're doing, it will find you, and once it does, your heart will skip a beat. ㅤ The AI feels insanely advanced for an indie game. It seems to adapt to your patterns and behaviors, hiding and waiting for the player in ways reminiscent of the advanced AI of Alien: Isolation. Because of this, it catches you off guard again and again. It came to the point where I had to pause the game and just breathe because it never lets you rest, not for one second. ㅤ And if that isn't enough, once you progress far enough, Aka Manto transforms into a more sinister, darker, and more aggressive version of itself, hellbent on stopping the player. If you're looking to play this, make sure you have a strong heart. You will need it. ㅤ The only real deficit the game has, if I had to mention one, is the story. Yes, the urban legend is cool and incredibly well adapted, but the side plot involving a student who committed suicide is extremely underdeveloped. I can excuse that, though, because the focus is clearly on gameplay above everything else. ㅤ Aka Manto definitely comes close to masterpiece territory, sits comfortably at around an 8/10, and is Chilla's Art's magnum opus.
Pretty good Chilla’s Art game. It’s really stressful and has a genuinely uncomfortable atmosphere which makes you never really feel safe. The horror here is way more focused on pressure and tension but because of the AI there are also some actually really good scares. The game is also surprisingly difficult. There are no saves so if you die it’s over. At first that can be pretty frustrating but after playing it a few times you start getting through it pretty consistently. What I especially liked was the design of the school. It’s extremely well made and together with the sound design the game keeps this really creepy atmosphere throughout the whole playthrough. I honestly ended up having way more fun with it than I expected at the beginning.
