China: Mao’s Legacy is a grand strategy game that plunges you into the turbulent decades of 20th-century China, from the death of Mao Zedong through the seismic shifts that shaped the modern nation. Developed by Peryite and published by Slitherine, this title is a detailed political simulator that blends historical fidelity with player-driven alternate history, challenging you to navigate ideological battles, economic reforms, and foreign diplomacy. This game is a masterclass in complexity and nuance. You step into the shoes of Chinese leadership during a period fraught with political intrigue, reform, and unrest. From handling internal factions to managing agricultural reforms and foreign relations, every decision ripples across the fragile fabric of the state. The level of detail is impressive — population groups with shifting loyalties, economic sectors that require constant balancing, and international pressures that can either make or break your regime. Unlike many grand strategy titles that focus on war and conquest, China: Mao’s Legacy shines by immersing players in the political and social engineering challenges unique to this era. Policies are not just abstract sliders; they represent real tensions and trade-offs. Push economic liberalization too fast, and risk alienating your communist base. Clamp down too harshly on dissent, and you might provoke rebellion or international condemnation. The game’s dynamic event system keeps you on your toes, introducing crises and opportunities that test your adaptability. Diplomacy with Cold War superpowers and neighboring countries adds another intricate layer. Balancing Sino-Soviet relations, navigating the Sino-American rapprochement, and responding to regional conflicts require a keen strategic mind. While not a graphical powerhouse, the interface is clean, informative, and well-suited to its complex gameplay. Maps, charts, and event windows provide a wealth of information, helping players make informed decisions. It’s a UI built for strategists — not casual players — but it manages to be accessible once you get the hang of it. China: Mao’s Legacy is undeniably deep, and with depth comes a steep learning curve. The game offers tutorials and documentation, but newcomers to grand strategy may feel overwhelmed. That said, the satisfaction of mastering its systems is rewarding, especially for players interested in modern history and political simulation. What Could Be Improved: -Some event outcomes can feel unpredictable, requiring multiple reloads for the “right” path. -The pacing can drag in the mid-game, especially if you stick too long in economic or political micromanagement. -A more dynamic AI could enhance replayability, particularly in diplomatic relations. China: Mao’s Legacy is a unique and engrossing grand strategy experience that offers a fresh perspective on one of the 20th century’s most transformative nations. It’s a challenging, thoughtful simulation for players who want to explore the intricacies of political power, ideology, and reform — not just battlefield conquest. If you’re a fan of historically grounded strategy games like Hearts of Iron or Victoria, and crave a deep dive into China’s complex legacy, this game is well worth your time. Rating: 8/10

If this game were just a little bigger, I think I would lose all of my time to it. This game gripped me, a longtime GSG addict, in the same way that learning EU3 did a decade ago. I have been recommending this to all of my friends and I can't wait to see what this studio works on next.

the fact this game is only 8.99 is crazy, it is also way more polished compared to citk and Ostalgie which is why i have spent over 90 hours on this game compared to 14 hours on Ostalgie and 14 on citk. yes the english translation is not great and yes there is a learning curve but compared to citk and ostalgie it is not super hard to master.

Basically the best game by this studio. This game is much less cryptic, you see the effects of increasing/decreasing budget (Unlike in crisis in the kremlin where you just had to guess), the UI is much better, and I love the new real time mechanics instead of just pressing on a book to progress the game. The game is also less punishing and less frustrating than other games, I had quite a good ending in my first game. You would probably not get to be a mighty superpower in your first run and miss a lot of possible outcomes, but you won't collapse horribly if you try and play historically. Overall, really fun and definitely buy this if you liked their other games!
