I don't know anything about Hololive, I am here as a fan of GalaxyTrail, one of the listed developers. So, I can say with certainty that even if you're just someone that likes traditional platformers, there's a lot to love here. It's clear a lot of love went into the game from both people that love platformers and people that love Hololive. The movement is smooth and robust, the art is fantastic, and I even found myself amused by a lot of the character interactions, despite not having any background on them. Additionally, each level ends up feeling unique: there is always some twist or creative idea that keeps things fresh while not overstaying its welcome or encroaching on what makes the gameplay good in the first place. And finally, best of all for me, you don't need to have any knowledge of Hololive beforehand to have a full story experience, all the needed context is given in the game. It is a little weird when you're sometimes briefly introduced to someone for a level and then never see them again, but this isn't too much of a bother for me. All in all, it's just a great platformer, top-to-bottom.

Alright, Hololive fan games have just reached a new height. Was I rusty with platformers before playing this? Yes. Was I unsure about the controls and flow of the movement at first? A bit. Did I feel like the first couple of hours on normal difficulty were a little too forgiving? Kinda. But hot damn, this game opened up. Not like it was 'closed' before, but then it OPENED UP in all regards. Once you get the controls down, it feels great. There are moments where you're surfing across a level and times where you're using your abilities and moveset to pick apart a puzzle that gets your brain working without making you feel blind or dumb. The level design overall is excellent, and the enemies feel fun or at least not too much of a momentum killer. The bosses are diverse, and the late game ones really test your handle of the controls and your comprehension of your abilities and the game's mechanics in a rewarding way. The studio behind this have experience with platformers and it shows. The story? Also great. It involves time travel, which is usually a recipe for a mind-bending mess of timeline branches that you need a notepad and a wiki open to keep track off. This story? Complex, but not too 5000IQ. A few moments were a bit fuzzy, but then they clicked. Take time to read, notice your surroundings, there's a decent amount of 'show not tell' and reading between the lines you can pick up on. That being said, I can't say it was a GENIUS story, but it doesn't have to be. It's smooth, sweet, and most importantly it informs the actual gameplay pretty well. Hell, I don't think I could've written it. The fan stuff? Lovely. Hololive is a BIG group so I wasn't expecting every member to be showcased; I was right. However pretty much everybody gets some mention even if it's only through dialogue. This game focuses on Council+Hope, and Myth. I was pleasantly surprised to see the cameos I saw. The dialogue seems to fit every character. I say 'seems' because I admit I'm not familiar with everyone myself. Dialogue quality overall was not an issue. It was funny, emotional, serious, unserious, and well timed enough to be satisfying. References and injokes are plenty, but there weren't any that I felt were being super milked. If you're not familiar with Hololive, they shouldn't confuse you too much or take away too much from the total experience. Fanservice? Mainly just jokes, 'aww' moments, and some flushed cheeks. No weird 'physics', not that I can certainly recall anyways. The art is superb. The pixel art is pleasant and well defined, and the levels, projectiles, and entities are visually legible even during the later more chaotic stage of the game. The community got involved in making art and music for this game, and that passion is simply heartwarming to see. The cutscenes? Satisfying. The BGM? BANGERS. The score includes a lot of covers of Hololive songs, as well as a fair few original compositions made for the game. So yes I obviously do recommend it to fans and even non-fans. I wish to see more Hololive talents give it a shot, more fans to try it out even if they don't watch the featured EN girls all that often. I also wish to see the devs continue to be involved with Holo Indie, perhaps in other projects. This is Holo Indie's most expensive publish to date. If they released a paid DLC for this game, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. 10 GWAKS out of 10 WAHS. Good stuff.

It's not just an awesome fan game, it's an awesome game in general. Even if you know nothing about Hololive - give it a try, it's an incredible platformer from the devs of Freedom Planet. And if you know Hololive... oh, boy - get ready for a treat. You can immediately feel that this is a passion project. Chrono Gear oozes with love and attention to details not only for Kronii, but for Holo as a whole.
