Please send help. They found my kryptonite. My one weakness. You are looking at a woman who has at least 5000 cumulative hours wasted across dozens of nonogram games and hundreds of hours playing rogue style game. Peanut butter in my chocolate? Rogue elements in my nonograms? I never stood a chance.
This game is good but it could be great. The glaring issue for me it's using time as tax: it currently scales too harshly in higher difficulties, and having tested playing without it in peaceful runs makes the game too easy. It's probably not an easy thing to balance. Some power-ups are boring but coming up with power-ups for picross must not be easy. Overall I like this game and I think it's worth its price
DO NOT JUDGE THIS GAME BY THE DEMO. I don't know if the demo was an early build demo or what, but the main game has different rooms, items, and balance from the literal start that addresses so many issues in the demo. Number 1 among these is better ways to use your money and letting you fight the timer. If the demo caught you at all, try the main game. The devs have done themselves so dirty representing their game that way. IMO better to remove the demo entirely and let the positive reviews speak for themselves. If I could have left a review based on the demo it would have been pretty negative - it's just my love of puzzle roguelites and picross that had me looking to see if this was early access/worth keeping an eye on. Turns out it's just bad marketing.
(Review as of patch 1.0.3) CiniCross is a really interesting game because it enforces a very different approach to solving Nonograms: probabilistic solving. More specifically, in this game you have to manage time and a health pool as two key additional resources. The health pool acts as a resource to allow you to make mistakes. Because the time you are given is VERY tight (until you get into the last 1/3rd of a run), you essentially cannot physically afford to try and solve a nonogram without making any mistakes - the game wants you to make very quick judgements on where cells are more likely to be than not and to try them regardless. If you're off by 1 - you're still fine - you can regain that health. The gameplay loop becomes about initially being careful with your placements as you don't have much health and then as the run goes on, becoming increasingly more aggressive in gambling on the squares without properly calculating if they are safe or not just to not waste time. By the end of a run, if you are not begin, the game stops being a nonogram game and is almost like a vampire survivors-esque power-trip in a nonogram form - you just randomly click all squares and win anyways due to various upgrades. This game is NOT for people who want a relaxed experience with slowly solved nonograms. Due to the nature of the game being a roguelike - you do have a probabilistic aspect to your power too. Items and upgrades are critical to keep up with the time curve of the game and so sometimes you do run into cases where you get too unlucky and lose to a boss just because you did not have a reasonable amount of time left. The game can be a little stressful, especially with the bosses, however the developer is actively patching the game since release so I think the balance will get fixed up. Regarding classes, they are nicely varied and have their advantages and disadvantages. There is even an idling class which, if you get ahead of the power curve, allows you to sit back and watch a nonogram get solved by itself hahaha. Overall, for the price, it's a great game, I got nearly all achievements now after 14h of play and think I will have 34/34 by hour 18 or so. The replayability is largely there.
