A lovely indie game that still has some rough edges. You can really feel that City Bus Manager was made with love. There is something strangely satisfying about building your little bus empire, watching your fleet drive around a real city, buying new buses, washing them, refueling them, repairing them and gradually improving the whole operation. There is also a fantastic variety of bus models, which makes expanding the fleet surprisingly enjoyable. That said, there are quite a few things I would love to see improved. The map can be frustrating, especially when some places that look connected actually are not. Automatic bus assignment could also be much smarter - for example, using large buses during rush hour and smaller ones very early in the morning or late at night. After a while, the missions become repetitive and the gameplay starts feeling a little too much like doing the same routine again and again. Some quality-of-life features would help a lot too - "Upgrade All" for bus stops, please! Some mechanics also feel underdeveloped or poorly explained. I still do not really understand what practical difference a friendly researcher makes, for example. And apart from requiring repairs more frequently, I am not sure there is enough difference between operating a bus with 200 km and one with 200,000 km on the clock. But do not get me wrong - I really like this game. It has rough edges, some systems could definitely go deeper, and eventually it becomes repetitive. Yet I have spent plenty of time simply enjoying watching my fleet work and taking care of my buses. For an indie management game, there is a lot here to love.

It’s not perfect by any means – it’s a small group of people who worked on this, so e.g. the UI is a bit cluncy sometimes. Check out the steam workshop, there are hundreds of modded busses, and you’ll find exactly what you need! Can get a bit laggy when you have like 70+ busses. Although I did put this as recommended, this review is actually a mixed one. Pros and Cons Pros -Open world (literally, you can go to any town/city in the world) -Extensive management on the buses, staff, and passengers alike ---For passengers, there is passenger satisfaction and your rating, which is based on a variety of things ranging from punctuality to seat comfort, it is also affected based on how well you maintain your buses ---For buses, you have to maintain it by cleaning it, fueling it, and keeping it in good condition ---For staff, there is stress level, and I like that friendliness gets higher the more you pay them, they can also ask for vacations or raises -Traffic delays buses, which is counteracted with bus priority (a feature I like, as it adds realism to the game) -Sandbox mode included! (I, personally, am a sucker for sandbox mode, as you can make whatever your heart desires, there is also normal and expert modes, which provides variety to gameplay) -Steam workshop support, now I can mod the heck out of this game, as I usually do with other modable games (it also adds gameplay variety) Cons -Lack of POIs (Points of Interests) in some cities (due to the usage of OpenStreetMap rather than something like Google Maps) -UI can get buggy (when I had the route maker open, I somehow closed the map and I couldn't do anything until I managed to open the map back up) -Lack of depth in routemaking, cover a decently sized area and you're good to go, you don't even need bidirectional service (it is just passengers coming from and going to random areas) -Livery editor can be limited (it's cool that you can import your own images and make a custom livery, however, you cannot stretch or squash images [that I am aware of, please let me know if you actually can do this] , and this has resulted in some difficulty in making a good livery) -Base price is a little high for what it is (in my opinion, I would pay $15-$20 for this game, not $30, I got this during a sale [this is only my opinion, everyone's price preferences are different] ) -The "guide" isn't even a guide, it just tells you what to buy without much further explanation. The buttons can also be a little hard to find sometimes (from my experience). My Verdict City Bus Manager is good for those who just want a detailed tycoon-style management game, I recommend the game because of that. For those who want to make actual public transport systems, I would recommend NIMBY Rails or Transport Fever 2 , and maybe even Cities: Skylines if you also want to make the city. To be honest, I would've chosen a "thumbs middle", "mixed", or a "neutral" option if it was offered. I feel like this would be a much better game if the cons were addressed. Edit: Apparently you can dispatch buses automatically, but you have to unlock it under "shift schedule" via the tech tree, I've removed that con. Edit 2: I've updated this review to have another con about the "guide".
First quick review after first hours of play. It's the best game in this style, but only because similar games (cities in motion 1 and 2) are over 10 years old now. Generally, the only disadvantage is fact that many potential UI changes would make game much better, for example shift markers in like timetable, sorting bus stops by number of waiting passengers, viewing whole travelled route per passenger including changes (this is available in cities skylines), easier timetable coordination per bus stop to allow exchanges, viewing all data in more compacted views (line statistics, bus statistic etc) and many more... I have just bought it, it's really worth buying, but making it much better seems really not far away from current status. I still hope that authors would make such improvements, but focusing on new game would definitely make progress slower. Additionally, one big missing thing is ignoring trams and trains - stops exist, but we are not competiting with them nor creating lines for exchange with other ways of communication. Recommend, but with hope for better future.
I only have 17.3hrs at the time of this review, I feel this to barely meet the minimum time required to give a review worth your time. I see so many negative reviews such as "really boring, can't edit properly, time scale is bad as well. Progession is stunted, not captivating gameplay." First & foremost, any reviews like this should not reflect the game, they are simply user error. Boring is subjective, by simply reading the games description you can avoid this simple let down. Editing is very prominent and accessible, laying out and designing your depot exactly how you want it. The time scale is amazing. It is exactly what bus manager game should have. The only way this could be bad is if you want quick money fast and don't want to work towards anything. This ties into my last point, progression. There is Absolutely abundant progression. WIthin 6 hours I had 12 large busses with 75% of my fleet of 43 busses being electric. It is not hard. My only complaints are the passengers loading/unloading can be buggy sometimes or not always updating . Asides from all of this, the game is worth playing as an experienced management game player. It deeply saddens me to see such a game get so many bad reviews from issues that should not reflect the game, but rather the players neg reviewing with less than an hour of playtime. I will be updating this review as time goes on and I log more hours. Any review with less than 8-12 shouldn't even be read.
