Dec. 2025
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts builds on the foundations of the original game while confidently standing as its own complete experience, offering two full-length campaigns and new factions that dramatically shift how battles unfold. Rather than feeling like a minor add-on, it expands the scope of the Company of Heroes formula by placing players in the shoes of armies rarely given center stage in WWII RTS games. The British 2nd Army’s push through Caen and the German Panzer Elite’s desperate resistance during Operation Market Garden present contrasting tones, pacing, and tactical demands. These two perspectives allow the expansion to feel broader and more varied, presenting the war as a series of complex, evolving struggles rather than a simple sequence of American-led victories. Both campaigns are cinematic, tightly directed, and filled with the environmental destruction and battlefield chaos that defined the original game while offering new tactical challenges unique to each faction. The British campaign highlights slow, methodical progress anchored in defensive superiority. Their forces rely on emplacements, trenches, officer support, and heavy artillery to establish a creeping frontline. This approach rewards players who manage territory carefully, choosing when to dig in and when to push forward. Every inch of ground matters, and the British army’s reliance on positioning and entrenchment creates battles that feel tense and deliberate. In contrast, the Panzer Elite demands constant motion. Their focus on fast vehicles, lightweight armor, and versatile half-tracks shifts the pace toward hit-and-run attacks, flanking maneuvers, and opportunistic strikes. Playing as the Panzer Elite forces you to always think ahead, repositioning before the enemy reacts, and taking advantage of mobility to compensate for fragility. This difference in faction rhythm provides a refreshing contrast, inviting players to rethink their usual strategic habits. One of the expansion’s strongest qualities is its use of the Essence Engine, which still stands out for how dynamically it simulates destruction. Buildings crumble under repeated shelling, roads turn into fractured debris fields, and sightlines shift as cover is destroyed or created. The addition of new weather effects, better lighting, and improved terrain detail gives missions a stronger sense of place. Even though weather does not drastically alter gameplay, it deepens immersion and helps maintain variety across the campaigns. The battlefield feels alive, reactive, and unpredictable, which enriches both single-player and multiplayer matches. Watching a tank smash through a farmhouse or a barrage reduce a fortified position to rubble remains as satisfying now as it was at release. Multiplayer remains one of Opposing Fronts’ enduring strengths. Adding the British and Panzer Elite to the roster opens up new strategic pairings and matchups. British defensive lines combined with American armor create potent Allied synergies, while Panzer Elite mobility can complement the Wehrmacht’s heavier, more traditional infantry and tank approaches. Matches become a dance of territory control, unit composition, and timing. The core Company of Heroes design—capturing resource sectors, protecting your supply lines, and using terrain properly—remains untouched, but the addition of two radically different factions brings new strategic layers. The expansion preserves the tight balance that made the original competitive scene so respected, offering players more ways to express their tactical style. Opposing Fronts does have occasional weaknesses. The structure of many missions remains rooted in familiar patterns such as holding a position under pressure or pushing through fortified choke points. While the campaigns are engaging, players may notice repetition in mission design or map usage. Newcomers might also find the British and Panzer Elite more complex than the original factions due to their reliance on nuanced mechanics like emplacements, officer buffs, vehicle-centric squads, or doctrine abilities that significantly alter how they function. Some graphical improvements, such as weather cycles, serve more as visual flair than meaningful tactical tools. These issues, however, do not undermine the overall strength and variety the expansion brings. Despite these flaws, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts succeeds as both an accessible standalone entry and a meaningful expansion for veterans. It expands the Company of Heroes universe with well-designed factions, memorable campaigns, and atmospheric battles that maintain the tension and tactical weight of the original. It respects what made Company of Heroes influential while confidently adding its own innovations. Even years after its release, Opposing Fronts remains a strong example of how to extend an RTS without losing focus or diluting what made the base game great. For strategy fans, it stands as a richly crafted portrayal of WWII combat, blending cinematic presentation with deep tactical decision-making in a way few games have matched. Rating: 8/10

That feeling when you reminisce about how good we had it back when Company of Heroes was in it's prime. In the Age of the Remaster/Remake, Company of Heroes would probably be a decent candidate.

Amazing game! I bought it when it originally released and have played it 4-5 times over. How they could take such an AMAZING franchise and screw up COH3 is beyond me. Pick this up! So worth it.
