Despite the positive recommendation, I'm going to be a bit critical of this one. I landed on positive though because I feel that they got the most important bits right... it's just a lot of the polish that is missing. First off before anything else though, this really screams multiplayer. The single player version just gives you AI companions in some areas that take the place of other players. Honestly this appears to be a game that was designed from the bottom up with multiplayer in mind. If you are simply looking for a good solo campaign... I think there are perhaps better choices. Or at least choices that won't feel quite like single player was a secondary thought process, like it kinda does here. But it is a good game, and I do plan to play through it single player, so you can be the judge. First off, what they did right. The action here works really well. I love the basic controls for melee and ranged combat, the form changing is great, the various animals I've gotten to play as all feel and act different. You seem to get good xp which means you are frequently unlocking new ability points and taking your build in a specific direction you are interested in. The dashing works well, although be aware this is one of those games where enemy bodies block dashing, so you have to be good at picking your directions. I really like how they integrated stable aiming with twin stick aiming for ranged, that was a really cool idea they had and it works out well. Overall I think the combat is fine, and that's the most important part of the game. The progression seems interesting and fun as well. The graphics are good, although the animations... not so much. More on that below. But in general, the map and the world look great. The special abilities and elemental effects are great, well done there. Light reflections are ok... I've seen better, but they did a pretty good job with it. Most of what I've seen though is darker areas with a lot of glowing effects, and they look fantastic. Of particular note, they outlined the enemy models in a black border. This really helps them stand out against the background, and while it does give the game a unique look to it.... the models look almost like stickers on a background.... I actually think it's somewhat charming, and I think the visual aid is more important than anything else. So I'm a fan of this. This is very much a passion project from essentially two people, and I think they did a great job overall. But I'm still going to be honest with my critiques below. 1. This is a full release, not an EA release... but it screams early access. I ran into a number of bugs that probably shouldn't exist if this is a full release. I feel like there is also a lot of opportunity for further graphical optmization, whether that be textures or lighting or whatever. This game takes far more resources than it should to produce a stable framerate, and even then you do get some dropping. You can dip the settings down, but again this is not a problem that should be placed on the players' lap. The game needs some resource optimization work. As an example of one of the graphical bugs I ran into, there is a glitch with the character model when swimming. It's pretty persistent, although your character does flash in and out a bit, but generally it just looks all wrong. They look kind of like they are deep underwater, but somehow there's a floating head and shadow on the surface, and then occasionally you'll see the body on the surface, then the head will disappear... it's really odd. Now I'm not sure if this is resolution or graphics setting specific, I didn't try testing that... but it shouldn't exist in a full release. This is early access level stuff, and honestly is too basic of an issue to let out the door. There's also what felt like inconsistencies in attack timing and range that become pretty obvious with some combat animations, specifically tail swiping. I guess this could be a balance thing, but it's a bit more inconsistent than I feel like it should be. Your mileage may vary here. 2. The character model animations are.... not very good. For 98% of the game, you are looking at your character model running. The animals look ok, but the human running animation looks like a stiff puppet with motorized shoulders. They don't lean forward into the run as much as they should for how much their arms and legs pump, and I think that's really what struck me. They look like a stiff, upright mannequin on swinging legs... it's just awkward. You know what it reminds me of, is someone with a bunch of spinal fusion going power walking. Again, it's not a game breaking problem but it's super annoying to me visually. 3. I hate the jumping. It just feels wrong in about every way to me. It's too short and stunted, and yet somehow in-game level changes that seem taller than your jump are possible to make. Jump attacking is a bizarre experience. Distances you can make are deceiving. Thankfully jumping is more of a navigational tool than a combat tool, but it's still not pleasant. Also, It's very obvious when they throw a broken bridge at you where you are supposed to sprint jump. I mean... I get it, but why bother? It's not really a surprise or a challenge, and it doesn't really add anything of value... I just feel like this was a game mechanic added in for game mechanic's sake, not something that really came about because it added value to the experience. Yeah, some jumps you need to make in cat form because you jump further. But again... that's not added value, it's just extra work because now you have to see the bridge, shift, walk back, build up a run, jump, then switch back to human where you perhaps wanted to be. It's kind of pointless tedium, if I'm honest. I'm not sure what sold them on adding this feature, because it doesn't appear to have a combat or other game function. 4. The voice acting is quite novice. They tried, and I'll give them credit. Too many game developers don't even try to go for voice acting. They did here, and they deserve kudos for it. But the voice actors were perhaps trying this for the first time? The tones and inflections are all off for how a normal person would speak in a conversation. These were clearly lines that were recorded in isolation by someone who was thinking too hard about emotional inflections. This breaks any sort of immersion, though honestly the game is light enough in that as it is. Again... not game breaking, just annoying. 5. The main story driver is a bit overused. A special item, passed down from the father. Carries special powers he never told anyone about! Oh and guess what... once you put them on, turns out they are broken and now you must go on a quest or they will destroy everything! But oh no... you cannot take them off. That will just make it worse! Total "The One Ring" kind of thing. I mean it works, but I would have liked something slightly more creative. Most people probably don't care about this, but I do and so I'm putting it here. After all is said and done, I do recommend this game because it is very fun once you get past some of the oddities like I said above. I hope they are continuing development and support, because the form changing stuff is pretty unique and I think they are on to something. As a small dev team, this is quite an accomplishment and I'm glad to spend money on it. I mean, even with the critiques I threw out above, I still bought the supporter pack. So yeah, I believe this game is worth it and if you like action RPG's, you should try it. Like I said at the beginning though, realize that this was first and foremost designed as a multiplayer game, and the single player experience suffers a bit from how obvious that fact is. Anyway, best of luck going forward to the developers, and I'll check back in regularly as I progress through the story.
