Cosmochoria is a distinctive indie experience that blends arcade shooting, procedural exploration, and an oddly soothing form of cosmic gardening into a single, cohesive loop. Developed by Nate Schmold and published by 30/30, the game immediately establishes its offbeat identity by placing you in control of a tiny, unclothed cosmonaut armed only with a jetpack, a laser, and an optimistic mission: travel through a hostile galaxy and restore life to dead planets. What sounds whimsical and almost comedic on the surface quickly reveals itself as a surprisingly layered and demanding game that rewards curiosity, adaptability, and persistence. At its core, Cosmochoria revolves around movement and flow. Drifting through space with a jetpack feels both liberating and precarious, as inertia plays a constant role in how you approach planets, dodge enemies, and manage combat. Landing on a barren world introduces the game’s most distinctive mechanic: planting seeds to gradually restore life. As you nurture a planet, its ecosystem grows, changing the visual landscape and providing tangible gameplay benefits such as healing, resources, and temporary safety from the relentless alien threats. This act of cultivation contrasts sharply with the constant danger surrounding you, creating a rhythm where moments of calm are always undercut by the need to stay alert. Combat in Cosmochoria is fast, reactive, and deliberately old-school in spirit. Enemies swarm from all directions, forcing you to juggle precision shooting with careful jetpack control. Boss encounters escalate this tension further, demanding mastery of movement patterns and spatial awareness rather than brute force alone. The simplicity of the controls hides a surprising amount of depth, especially as enemy behaviors become more aggressive and unpredictable the deeper you venture into the galaxy. Success often comes not from overpowering foes, but from learning when to retreat, when to reposition, and when to abandon a planet before it becomes a death trap. Progression is structured around a roguelite framework that emphasizes long-term growth over single-run perfection. Even when a run ends in failure, you retain crystals earned from exploration and combat, which can be invested into permanent upgrades. These improvements subtly but meaningfully change how future runs feel, gradually expanding your survivability, efficiency, and combat effectiveness. This system softens the game’s difficulty curve while reinforcing a sense of steady advancement, making each attempt feel purposeful rather than wasted. Over time, the galaxy transforms from an overwhelming threat into a space you can navigate with growing confidence and intent. Visually, Cosmochoria embraces a vibrant, abstract style built from colorful shapes and energetic animations. Restored planets bloom with life in a way that feels immediately rewarding, providing strong visual feedback for your efforts. The contrast between empty, lifeless worlds and those you’ve successfully revived reinforces the game’s central theme of creation amid destruction. Complementing the visuals is an atmospheric electronic soundtrack that adapts well to both the meditative moments of planet restoration and the frantic chaos of large-scale battles, maintaining immersion without becoming intrusive. While Cosmochoria does not place heavy emphasis on explicit storytelling, it conveys a quiet sense of mystery through environmental details and scattered discoveries. Ancient structures, strange artifacts, and unexplained elements hint at a broader universe without spelling everything out. This understated narrative approach encourages exploration for its own sake, rewarding players who are willing to drift off the optimal path and investigate the unknown. The lack of direct exposition allows the focus to remain firmly on gameplay while still giving the galaxy a sense of history and personality. Ultimately, Cosmochoria stands out as a game that thrives on contrasts: chaos and calm, destruction and growth, simplicity and depth. Its unusual combination of arcade action and planetary restoration creates a loop that feels both tense and oddly therapeutic, especially once its systems click into place. Though it can be punishing in its early hours and demands patience from the player, the satisfaction of mastering its mechanics and bringing life back to a hostile universe makes the journey worthwhile. For players who appreciate experimental indie design, procedural challenges, and gameplay that rewards resilience, Cosmochoria offers a memorable and quietly compelling adventure that remains distinctive years after its release. Incredibly fun, but it's been crashing lately far into a run. That's kind of irritating. Still well worth the $1.50 I spent.

is the ui completely broken for me. YES is the game fun and unique. YES it just needs some roguelite elements to have some perma-upgrades in between plays and this would be a hit...
