Don't know why people call it a fungerlike as the only part similar to it is the enemy design but I'd say Cradle of Nightmares is definitely a game worth playing, with the rather small downside that you either need to download a half finished fan made translation, or be able to understand mandarin. -slight warning The game has some Enemy Sprites with exposed Genitalia/ Breasts. -The Combat It feels like a somewhat improved version of Black souls2, with you being able to switch weapons mid combat, but here you can also switch your sidearm, which gives you a lot of freedom to experiment, but sadly combat overall feels rather easy unless you handicap yourself. There is also a Limb system similar to Funger, but it is very rarely used. -The Stat System In this game, to increase your stats, you have to either find used syringes to increase a certain stat, or use your gained souls to slightly boost all of them, but gain of stats also depends on which body type you chose at the start, i.e., Strong will boost your atk and Def gain, while Agile boosts agility gain, etc., with body type and Syringes being able to be changed and bought in the lategame. -the Gear and Buildmaking There is a lot of items in this game, with me finding 62 Weapons, 66Sidearms, 76Spells, 40Helmets and chest plates, 32 Gloves, and 150 Consumables. This might seem overwhelming, and it kinda is, with you only having 3Armor slots, 5ring slots, and 20 attuned Spell slots, but there are some truly great combinations out there. For example, I ran around with a sickle that would attack every enemy on screen simultaneously 9 Times in a single turn. -the Exploration The Exploration is one of the greatest parts about this game, with it throwing you into a huge open map full of secrets, and tasking you to figure ♥♥♥♥ out yourself most of the time, but threat not, for there are shortcuts hidden around every corner, giving you multiple paths into each area, and in some cases even allowing you to bypass bosses also, if your spirit goes bellow 50 there are even more paths and secrets to discover. -Aesthetic Almost all the Humans look straight out of Bloodborne, while the Monsters, Lunatics, etc., look like a mix of funger, Dark souls, and Phil Tippett's mad God, with most of the designs just popping up in a single area, or sometimes even just a tile. -Endstatement Cradle of Nightmares is in my eyes another gem in the rpg maker scene that I can only wholeheartedly recommend, and I will replay once it either gets officially translated, or All-bones Jones finishes his. With that out of the way, thank you All-Bones Jones for your translation, as the previous one was something, and I will be eyeing the dev very closely for his future project.
If you felt Fear and Hunger's combat was too technical, wanted something like Dark Souls in a more traditional turn based setting, and love exploring, I have wonderful news for you. The music and lore are also banging. It's pretty rough and I can't quite tell if it's just the fan-made english patch, but if you can look past that, you might find something to love here. It's huge enough for me to have a turn based horror RPG without constant limb loss and restarting the game, as much as I love F&H. In short, friend ahead. So, Add to Cart.
Cradle of Nightmare is rough around the edges. First, the disclaimer, and things you're probably worried about. It's a quite a bit less polished than Black Souls, which the game obviously takes a lot of inspiration from. On top of that, while All Bone Jones made an English translation mod for the game (shoutout for making this game playable), it's solo work, and like most Chinese to English translations, many parts of the dialogue are very "Chinenglish" which can turn off many people. Due to the niche nature of these two things, there isn't a lot of English help available if you get stuck. However, using discussions and the few guides that there were, I was able to get the true ending, and navigate most of the game without issue. Now, as for the game itself, many people like to compare the game's design to Fear and Hunger, and Black Souls. While the game obviously takes inspiration in these games, I believe that the story and atmosphere could very well make this a 3rd independent powerhouse of niche rpgmaker-esque souls like games. In this game, humanity has become distorted, many of the weak willed have already gone insane, eldritch horrors have descended. souls are mutated, demons have been born, the human psyche has become a weapon and a curse, dreams have become reality. I went into this expecting a mini souls-like rpg for $7 when not on sale, and instead got a full 25 hour experience to get all 3 endings. There are secrets doors, the progression is non-linear, there are 60+ bosses and invaders to defeat, the absurdity and surreal story is interesting and engaging, and even the main character is delightfully endearing. I do share the opinion of some of the other reviews that I see that the game does get a bit easy after the halfway point. After you beat one or 2 of the main progression bosses, much of the game can be steamrolled, Im talking spam the z button to attack until the enemy dies. This isn't true for every boss, and the main few bosses actually gave me a surprising bit of challenge. Overall I had a lot of fun with the game, feel a little bit closer to all the other people trying to navigate this little Chinese gem, and definitely got my money's worth out of this game. Big recommend!!
