I was waiting for this from the 2000s, i hoped it would not suck. It doesn't suck. Still prefer the originals for middle summer evenings, getting the vibe of playing on a crt on a porch. Just like when life didn't suck itself. Back when member berries were fresh and Juice.
My dad Died a little over a year ago now, this was my favorite game series to play with him. My brother, my dad, and I 'pass-and-played through all the readily available games (1, 2, 3, and 4). Recently (about a month ago) I decided to replay them. It was really emotional, in a good way. here is my personal review of each game in the trilogy. Crash bandicoot is a good first game but my least favorite of the trilogy since its not my favorite game wise and holds the least memories of the three. its definitely dated but still worth playing through. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes back holds the most sentimental value to me. Especially the last world and snow levels. On top of this it is a really fun game with some good challenge. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped Is my favorite gameplay wise, the upgrades are really cool (especially the bazooka) and the level design really speaks to me. It holds a lot of value to me as well but noticeably less. Do I recommend these games: Yes, as much as I could be partially blinded by the memories I have surrounding this game, it is a really enjoyable trilogy with enough content to be worth the $40 price tag. each game takes a good few hours to beat. totaling around 15 hours to beat all three, and the 100% completion route takes like 50 hours but it is NOT for the weak.
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a classic that’s absolutely worth returning to. Vicarious Visions did a fantastic job remastering this nostalgic masterpiece. I played the first three endlessly back in the good ol’ days, and they still deliver. The trilogy is still fun, offers a solid challenge if you’re going for 100%, and the visual upgrade is *chef's kiss*. Crash Bandicoot - The OG. Still a blast to play and provides a decent challenge, with some tough platforming sections, hidden levels, and time trials. The visual and control update was welcome here. Crash Bandicoot: Cortex Strikes Back - The GOAT of the series and delivers the most challenging platforming and time trials for sure. There were plenty of head-banging moments, lots of backtracking, and YouTube quickly became my best friend, after watching some guides I felt like many of the hidden paths were nearly impossible to find on my own. Kudos to whoever discovered them first. Pro tip: Don’t waste too much time on Time Trials until you defeat Cortex and unlock the speed boots. Crash Bandicoot: Warped - I almost want to call this the weakest in the series. The level design and challenges are still fun, but everything feels easier. Hidden gems, bonus paths, boss fights & time trials don’t match the challenge of the first two games. My one real complaint: the initial name entry screen after the trials, it doesn’t remember your previous input, forcing you to scroll through each letter every time...I will henceforth be known as AAA. Overall, this was a fantastic trip down nostalgia lane. It runs amazing on the Steam Deck, and Vicarious Visions deserves major credit for the care and improvements put into this trilogy.
A smashing blast from the past Those are the exact words you get greeted with when launching the game, and I think it’s a very good assessment. So, this game recreates (remasters, if you will) the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy with updated visuals, adjusted physics, and unified controls. It basically modernises and packs all three old games into one. The level layouts, enemy patterns, crate placements, and secrets are nearly identical to the PlayStation originals, but movement and hitboxes do follow a modernised engine. As a result, jumps feel slightly heavier and more precise than in the original three games, which can make certain platforming sections - especially in Crash 1 - more demanding than they were on original hardware back in the day. The remaster standardises saving, adds time trials across all three games (Crash 1 never had those, for example), and smooths out the entire flow of things. It does not alter the core structure though: linear stages, bonus rooms, gem/crystal collection, coloured gems, and relic runs remain intact. The visual updates stayed extremely faithful to the original themes while introducing more detail, lighting, and animation than the PS1 engine could ever display. Audio remains close to the original compositions, with modernized instrumentation. It’s actually so funny to me, because I used to play the originals in the late 90s on the PS1, and I could’ve sworn this (the modern version) is how the games looked back then too. Ah, the poison that is nostalgia 😂 But if you look at direct comparisons of how it looked vs how it looks now, you can instantly notice what an enormous improvement it is, especially when put them side by side for comparison in videos, like for example this one: https://youtu.be/aNiIh9CALEA?si=jGThBJrtL1LgbydJ Compared to the old trilogy, this collection is mechanically mostly the same, but polished into a single coherent package. It preserves the sequence of challenges, the progression curve, and the overall rhythm of each game. The difference lies in the execution: the original games had looser physics and simpler visuals, whereas the remaster feels more consistent and more demanding in precision. There are new added levels btw.! Very good remaster, I must say. Even if you never played the old games, but like platformers, this is a great experience.
