My late sister and I played this game for years. We didn't bother with the story, spending all of our time in the Chao Garden. This is an awesome game! The controls and camera angles are a little weird to get used to but I love the levels in this game! It also contains one of the coolest themes in my opinion: "Don't Stop, Just Go!" which is the theme for the level Green Forest.
Great game, but unfortunately, this version isn't that good. It needs a proper remaster. I recommend modding it. My modlist in order: SA2 Render Fix, SASDL, SA2 Input Controls, Dreamcast Characters (no more weird eyed Sonic when beating the level), Better Radar, HD GUI for SA2, Dreamcast Boss Textures, Enhanced City Escape, HedgePanel (Fast somersault), Partial DC Fog Restoration (delete files for Pyramid Cave, it's too dark), PrisonL Fog Restore, SA2 Error Msg Fixes, SA2 Volume Controls (it isn't perfect, cutscenes are still mid badly mixed), Sonic New Tricks (Instant spindash and remapping), Rogue's eye animation Fix, Idle Chatter, Discord Rich Presence, Oddity Patch, Tikal Anim Fix, Menu Overhaul, Minimal Pickup Fix, Oddity Patch 2: Electric Boogaloo, Dreamcast Ghost Room, Dreamcast Mech Grunts, E0022 After Knuckles VS. Rouge, President Scene in Dark Story, Tweaked Water Fog. Optional but broken in cutscenes: Holiday mod. Code: Chao Stat Muiltiplier
Why can't Sega make games like this anymore!? Seriously, it's extremely replayable, actually challenging, the speed comes when you actually learn the levels (which is pure adrenaline), the Chao Garden is adorable, and it doesn't have Denuvo. This is objectively the best Sonic Game on Steam and it's over 25 years old, and I'm 16 and I still feel like this game is timeless!
Do you love Sonic? Do you love Tamagochi? Then you'll adore this game. I love this game and I remember putting hundreds of hours into it on the Gamecube as a kid. That said, it can be terribly clunky and awkward to play at times, and it's difficult to get a high rank on stages. Your first playthrough you'll be lucky to see a B score. However... The depth of this game is insane, the ability to replay levels is wild. There's secrets in each stage that you won't even know about until you've completed the game. The Chao Gardens is my favourite part of the game by far. It's incredibly complex and grindy, but it just adds to the replay factor. It'll take you a VERY long time to complete all the chao races and karate fights, but who cares, the chao garden is the best part of the sonic franchise by far. It's a shame they stopped adding chao gardens to their games, because it's the only reason I'd buy another sonic game.
