Creature Romances: Kokonoe Kokoro is an unusual visual novel that takes a familiar childhood-friend romance and transforms it into something deliberately bizarre. Developed by Nostalgia and published by Sekai Project, it follows Ichitarou Ichinose, an ordinary high school student whose life lacks any clear ambition or exceptional talent. His romantic interest is his childhood friend Kokonoe Kokoro, but there is one rather significant complication: she is a gigantic anthropomorphic grasshopper. Instead of merely using this premise for a quick joke, the game commits to it throughout the entire story. The contrast between an otherwise recognizable romantic storyline and Kokoro's distinctly insect-like appearance forms the heart of the experience. She is not simply a conventional anime heroine with antennae or a few insect characteristics added to her design. The artwork embraces the creature concept, creating scenes that can simultaneously feel cute, absurd, and unsettling. This commitment gives the game an identity that is difficult to forget, although players who are uncomfortable with insects or grotesque imagery may find certain scenes genuinely unpleasant. What makes the story surprisingly effective is how seriously it occasionally treats its ridiculous premise. Kokoro is presented as a genuine childhood friend with emotions, insecurities, affection, and a meaningful connection with Ichitarou. The writing frequently follows recognizable visual-novel conventions involving school life, friendship, romantic uncertainty, and thoughts about the future. The humor emerges naturally from watching these familiar situations unfold around characters whose appearances completely contradict the expectations of a typical romance game. The narrative also has a darker side. What begins as an eccentric romantic comedy eventually introduces more serious consequences, including a life-or-death decision near the conclusion. Multiple endings give the player's decisions some importance, although this should not be mistaken for an enormous branching visual novel. The overall experience is relatively short and focused. There are limited opportunities for interaction compared with more elaborate choice-driven adventures, so most of the player's time is spent reading dialogue and watching the relationship develop. Visually, the game intentionally walks a thin line between charming and grotesque. Its unusual creature designs are fundamental to the humor, but they also contribute to the psychological horror atmosphere suggested by some of its themes. There is disturbing imagery, mature material, some nudity, and content involving non-human characters. Anyone expecting a wholesome conventional dating simulator based purely on the word "romance" should understand that the presentation can become strange and uncomfortable. On the other hand, this willingness to embrace its peculiar concept is precisely what separates it from countless more predictable visual novels. The audio presentation adds personality to the experience. Japanese dialogue features full voice acting, while English players receive translated interface text and subtitles. Since this is a dialogue-heavy game, the voice performances help give its eccentric cast more character. The presentation remains relatively simple overall, but it serves the short narrative effectively without unnecessary mechanical complications. Gameplay is extremely straightforward. There is no combat, exploration system, resource management, or demanding puzzle design. This is fundamentally a traditional visual novel built around reading and making occasional decisions. Steam achievements provide a small incentive to explore the available outcomes, while Steam Cloud support is useful for maintaining progress. Players looking primarily for substantial interactive gameplay may therefore find it too passive, but visual-novel fans should immediately understand what kind of experience is being offered. The short length is both an advantage and a weakness. The unusual joke remains fresh because the game does not stretch the concept across dozens of hours, and completing alternate outcomes does not require an enormous commitment. At the same time, the limited duration means that its characters and relationships cannot develop with the depth found in much larger visual novels. Some players may reach the ending just as they are becoming invested in the strange world. Steam Deck compatibility is currently Unverified, with no official Steam Deck compatibility rating displayed for the game. A Linux version exists and the hardware requirements are extremely modest, but that should not be confused with official Deck verification. Given the simple visual-novel controls and lightweight requirements, it may be possible to play on Steam Deck, but users should be prepared for potential compatibility or interface issues rather than assuming completely trouble-free operation. Ultimately, Creature Romances: Kokonoe Kokoro works because it takes an absurd concept much further than expected. Beneath the giant grasshopper heroine and deliberately uncomfortable imagery is a surprisingly recognizable story about affection, acceptance, and choosing what matters to you. Its combination of romance, comedy, grotesque visuals, and darker consequences will naturally limit its audience, but players who appreciate experimental visual novels may find it unusually memorable. It is short, mechanically simple, and undeniably strange, yet those qualities are also responsible for much of its personality. It is a compact and wonderfully bizarre visual novel that turns an outrageous romantic premise into something unexpectedly sincere. Its limited gameplay and short duration hold it back, but its commitment to being genuinely different makes it worth experiencing for fans of unconventional visual novels. Rating: 7/10

i consider this game the best visual novel that i've ever played. no, really this game is actually great even if the praying mantis girl were just a regular human. This game was supposed to be the greatest business idea in game development. Judging by how few sprites there are, I’d guess the development costs were probably around $80–100. But instead of putting the rest of the money into advertising, the devs apparently decided to spend it all on drugs and hookers.
