I think I'd only recommend Cristales for people new to the JRPG/turn-based RPG genre - it's very straightforward as an introduction to that type of game, and it'll likely be enjoyable without being too difficult or frustrating. If you want something gorgeous to look at but not super stressful or difficult, I'm sure you'll have a good time. Overall I'd say Cristales shines brightly in terms of the art style, concept, and music to an extent, but the execution really left some things to be desired. First and foremost I felt that the core fighting mechanic was underwhelming, and the time-manipulation specifically was a bit of a miss. Since only Crisbell can do the time shift and it uses up your turn, the entire process feels clunky and requires a good deal of set up to pull off. The results are also unimpressive, especially during boss fights. A large number of enemies (bosses and otherwise) are completely immune to statuses, which all but nullifies the effectiveness of the time manipulation. All in all I felt like it was more gimmicky than actually necessary to the combat, which is a shame because it's a very unique idea. Story-wise I'd continue the theme of good concept but lackluster execution. The skeleton of an excellent story is there and it is intriguing, but there's not enough interaction with the world and NPCs to really flesh it out. Most of the game felt like the story was on rails and you only got to take a few steps from the track. I was really left wanting more in that area; I could see the tip of the iceberg and wanted to dive all the way to the bottom. I'm not exaggerating when I say they could have tripled the amount of side-quests and character interactions if they wanted to. This also meant that a lot of the main characters unfortunately felt pretty one-dimensional. We get glimpses of back story, but nothing that doesn't serve The Plot. Something akin to loyalty missions would have really helped in that area, especially since there are characters that are not unlocked until very late in the game. Finally I have to mention some general quality of life and bug issues. I won't get into details, but I think Cristales would have greatly benefited with more play testing just to sus out minor QOL changes that would make the game feel less clunky. There are also a few bugs here and there, the most egregious of which is when, for one particular area, the game warns you of a "point of no return", but the warning comes AFTER YOU ALREADY PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN!!! This means that once you see that warning, you are already locked out all the side quests in that area if you hadn't completed them, and it is completely unforgivable that they did not catch it in play testing. Thank goodness I don't worry about 100%ing achievements... It probably sounds like I'm crapping all over this game, but to be clear I really did enjoy playing it. It's gorgeous, it's easy to pick up and learn, the world is unique and interesting, and every once in a while you can set up a very satisfying combat combo. It's also worth mentioning that the voice acting is excellent! The VAs all did a bang-up job and sounded wonderful! All that being said, I'm hoping that the Cristales team keeps up the good work and is able to learn some lessons that can be applied to their future projects. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for new stuff from this team.

Absolutely beautiful art and design. Pretty decent game-play and a captivating story/world. Also cute talking frog. There are a few moments where dialogue does not match text, but that's rare and does not detract from the game-play.

I admit I don't have too much experience or interest in RPGs but I had a lot of fun with this one both for the gameplay, and characters and story! I liked it from early on but waited to finish it to leave a proper view and I can't say it lost my interest ever! The different strategies you can use with the different combinations of the characters is really fun. I loved exploring the world and the characters were so cute! The art style was very pretty and what caught my attention in the first place. It being fully voiced also a nice luxury, features some of my favorite actors too! I def think it's worthy of a try! I was lucky enough to get it while it was on sale but I think it's well worth it's full price.

I put this game on my wish list a long time ago and was scared off by the mixed reviews. Now that I played it, I think it's pretty good. Not $40 good, but still good. Every single dialogue is voiced. Every. Single. One. Even for the smallest and most insignificant NPC. This is amazing for a small game like this. And all the voice talents do an amazing job. Even though it is annoying at times when you're asked for the trillionth time "Do you wish to land here?" The characters are good and the banter between them makes the game feel more alive. Willhelm necking Christopher or Zas casually speaking out loud what you think in front of your screen is just amazing. Cris herself is a little bit bland, but grows with her adventure. The story itself is... okay. While nothing spectacular, it okay in its own right. It doesn't help that the whole story revolves around time, and there are only a handful of good time traveling stories in this world. The game mechanics of each character are unique enough to try them, even though there is only one VIP in your group who will kill most enemies in one turn. Cris' whole mechanic with time shifting is interesting, but irrelevant for most enemies and even bosses later on, which is a shame. The town riddles regarding time travel, while interesting in theory, are pretty easy and in almost all cases you are told exactly what you ""could"" do to proceed, which is exactly what you should do. The OST is pretty good as well, some outstanding battle tracks are included. So in short: If you want a short, small game with a unique experience, even if it is not the best out there, get this game on sale and have a good time :) Final warning for completionist: Some achievements require reloading saves, one or two may be bugged. If you want to 100% this game, check a walkthrough beforehand.

I recommend this game if you find it interesting or intriguing from the trailers, images, and/or content about it online. I'd get it on a discount just to experience the art. It's a very 'basic' game, but it does the basics competently enough and the new stuff is does try are good. Visually it's amazing. I spent a couple of hours just looking it at, traveling to each timeline to see how the art, world and characters change. It does the concept of time travel or seeing past/future really well, there's no overcomplication that can come from dabbling in this topic. The combat is alright. It isn't hard as some people make it up to be. The enemies are pretty simple once you get to learn them, and there's a small level of strategy with what moves to use and how to use the time abilities. I did a small amount of grinding and fought every battle I encountered and I managed just fine. The story and plot isn't anything to right home about. The writing in these kinda games can be an advantage but in this game they played it pretty safe, tho the voice acting is competent and can be really good at times. There's 1 small section at the end of the game that really surprised me in that it tackled a pretty heavy topic/story point and the voice acting for the NPC involved was top notch. Cons for the game are random encounters which some people can dislike. The plot was kinda whatever near the end, and it relies too much on going back to old areas to do stuff and fight similar enemies to ones you fought. There's 2 such sequences in the game and it really hurt the pacing, feels like it's just padding. Enemy design is also very limited, a lot of them, especially bosses, get reused. The game is short enough that it's not that big of a deal. You also move kinda slowly in the world and you do a lotta walking so the slowness really shows. There's a sidequest that's easily missable if you don't immediately go and get it, ruining your true ending/100% run.
