I played this game, getting through the puzzles with some trial and error, and thought it was okay. Then I replayed it, making sure I knew every move I made was correct before I made it, and it was amazing. Genuinely beautiful puzzle design that still blows me away with how intuitive it is. I came here from playing hexcells by the same dev, and I'm honestly not sure which is better. Absolutely worth it, especially when it's on sale.

For many years I've been to my grandmother's house. Be that during festivities such as Christmas or New Years or just on a typical Sunday lunch it was an excuse to meet up with the rest of the family. Aside from how the spaghetti was exquisite I remember how she would lend me a magazine with different logic puzzles for me to pass the time and not engage in the political and economical discourse my uncles were usually arguing about. The reason I mention this is that this game reminds me of those cherished memories. CrossCells is very much a math game presented in such a way where the focus is on colouring cells appropriately similarly to the other games by Matthew. While the mathematical operations can be done by first graders, the gameplay does require a bit of observation since some of the cell related restrictions may take you by surprise and make you rethink your strategy. There were a couple of levels that I genuinely had to redo due to missing one cell or being one off and the lack of an undo button certainly wasn't pleasing. What is though is the presentation. Like in the other cases it features a clean mix of colours neatly organized cells with Helvetica typography that is comfortable to the eyes. But in case that wasn't soothing enough a gimmick was added to the mouse movement where moving it through the screen would generate waves much like one does while moving a finger through a puddle. Couple that with calming sound effects and this game is midway into becoming a meditation practice or something in the vibes of Electroplankton. But besides that, from its retail price and the logical challenge I can certainly recommend it and would like to request for an undo button even if the game has already come out for years. No matter if that isn’t the case, we still have the mouse movement.

CrossCells CrossCells by Matthew Brown achieves taking a simple concept or idea and making something fun and enjoyable out of it. The mechanics of the game are intuitive, and each time a new mechanic is introduced, it is done in a clear and understandable manner. The levels slowly increase in difficulty, and can become moderately complexe or time consuming to solve, yet they remain within a relatively casual range. The visual aesthetics of the game are clean, polished, and of good quality. CrossCells is overall a good quality, slightly challenging, and enjoyable puzzle game from Matthew Brown .

Felt like trial and error was needed for many of these puzzles but nevertheless it's an ok game. Hexcells is better imo.
