I think understanding how this game plays is the key to if you would like it or not., This is a Demeo crossover with Dungeons and Dragons. The game plays closer to the Demeo side with D&D names, skills, and monsters and is not a deep D&D dive. It's more battle focused, easy to learn, and fun in groups. There are a set number of characters to play. You can pick any of the 7 available and tweak a few things like model colors, name, and perks, but you play as is. So a Dwarf Fighter is always a Dwarf Fighter. No changing classes, more like Hero Quest where you play a set character and class. You have an inventory. This is represented by your cards. Cards cover skills, spells and potions/items. You can carry a max of 10 cards and can increase that number through perks. Each character also has their own deck of skills that they will pull new cards from during the game. A max hand cannot pick any more cards, so you need to play them or sell them to get more. Opening chests, killing monsters, etc will give more cards during the game, but healing is limited, so you need to play cautious. You can get overwhelmed fast if you press too hard or run out of skills if you don't go for some of the chests on the board. The game has a big tabletop feel to it, as intended. You can scroll around and plan out moves, but line of sight is key. If you get LoS on something in the middle of a fight, you just doubled your trouble. Most boards you must move to finish as creatures will keep spawning in other areas over time and some are kill all or kill boss boards that will have an ending situation. Each character moves in turn with 2 action points per turn and can interact with other NPCs or fight battles depending on the situation., There are shops to sell and a tavern to heal up in. You can make a stop after missions then choose your next location. You can play single player with up to 4 heroes and it plays fine. Co-Op was really fun as the game moves fast, has plenty to do and each character feels unique. There are 2 full campaigns and a bunch of one shot dungeons to play through as of now. You cannot exchange cards between players but you can use any card, even a spell if you are not a magic user. Players can get others back up if they fall in combat and the graphics/locations are amazing to play in. Characters level up with perks you can unlock and will get new weapons to use if you want at certain levels. So, you don't have that much leveling to do. It's more give a little control then get back to the battles. If you are looking for a fun night with a good D&D feel this will wet the whistle. If you are looking for something closer to actual D&D full blown you need to go more BG3 or Solasta. Think of this more like pulling the board game out of your closet and playing with what it has available rather than a sit down game of D&D with pen and paper. It plays well, was fun with a group of 4, and the music/effects are solid. Recommend.

I'm honestly having a great time playing through the game, I like it a lot. my one ... critique? suggestion? though is that I'd like to see an update that allows you to use multiple heroes on your team instead of just one + 3 hirelings. being able to have 4 individually leveling and growing characters i think would feel much more rewarding and personal, and it would allow a significant boost of replayability that i fear the game currently lacks, for its $30 price tag. EDIT: literally THE DAY after i posted this review the game got updated and solved that exact problem. you can now have an entire party of your custom-built heroes. hell yeah

I did not play the original Demeo, so I was unfamiliar with the system that made it into their new game, Battlemarked. However, it's pretty simple: you move your minis about the dungeon or scenario board and you have cards that mimic abilities and attacks in D&D. Some cards are permanently in your hand, perhaps with a cooldown, and some are discarded once played. The team of four characters each earns a new card as a meter is built up by dealing damage or killing enemies. All in all, it's a fun way to run a dungeon-delving simulator. The D&D aspect of the game is what drew me, and it's a very high-quality piece of work. The models are faithful, the work on them, both in colors and overall look, is really wonderful since you can spin around the map and zoom to get a full look at them all. The voice acting is excellent and the narrative campaigns are well-written. At the moment, there are two campaigns that run about 7-8 hours each and there are 6 characters/classes to choose from. They've already stated that they'll add in at least one more campaign as the year goes along, and I am hoping that alongside any future campaigns, they also intend to release more characters so that we can eventually get one for each of the 12 D&D classes. (Sorry, Artificer.) It's definitely a game you want to play with a friend or a full group, however. And while you can have public games that random folk can join, this is best enjoyed with YOUR friends. They're working to improve the single player aspect so that the 'hireling' heroes that make up the rest of your team will gain levels as you do, so if you intend to just use this as a solo experience, keep that in mind. There's a lot to love if you're a fan of D&D and I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed listening to the various NPCs; there's a lot of quality to enjoy. If you've got a group, by all means pick it up; if you're just on your own, maybe wait for the next campaign to drop.

I'm having fun with the game, definitely recommend it! However, the devs should really listen to those complaining about the solo mode leveling situation. You should be able to level up your characters in solo mode, not only the "main one". Besides that, I'm having fun. 😃
