Compared to the Gloomhaven app, this is a hugely significant improvement - much faster to play with the option to speed up animations, an undo button to let you roll back each action that can carry through rounds, and a lot of very useful QOL. While I haven't tried multiplayer the single player experience has been pretty much free of any significant bugs outside of weird edge case rulings around items. Given how many of Frosthaven's scenarios have weird rules, having an app to manage that side of things for me is great. If you're not used to Gloomhaven or Frosthaven, though, I have to admit that Frosthaven is a rockier experience than Gloomhaven on the whole. This is tricky because this isn't really the app's fault at all - the digital version is faithful to what it has to work with - but Frosthaven is not a great onboarding experience for new players and can have some truly punishing levels in it that can seem pretty insurmountable, so be warned that it can be a rough time and that failing a scenario is, in fact, okay and even expected in some situations. Thankfully the game lets you fail forwards - any failure is a chance to draw more events, build more stuff in town, and generally get more capability for the future.
Great game already even if it's still early access. So much game time is offered for the price. These devs should be cited as role models for their early access roadmap and commitment to the players. If you enjoyed the boardgame Frosthaven or Gloomhaven +digital, you will love this version of Frosthaven. 3 irritating aspects of the boardgame are better in the digital version : the buildings and town attacks management, plus the annoying calendar of events. They made it quick and simple which is much appreciated for experienced players. The UI is better than Gloomhaven digital. If you're new to these games, take your time to learn the cards mechanics. It can be frustrating at first but once you get it you will stick to this game. One of the best turn based strategy there is in my opinion.
I have mixed feelings regarding both the game, and some of the other negative reviews. The UI is fine. Other complaints, I don't understand. One review cited "losing a mission to UI confusion is soul-crushing." The game autosaves literally every turn. At most, make a mistake, go back 10 minutes and play the same turn again? The game is quite hard and requires some trial and error, reloading autosaves, can be annoying. But losing a scenario to UI confusion? Skill issue. Very good, if hard, game. Still getting some game breaking hangs playing multiplayer, but if you want to play single player and enjoy a challenge/puzzle? Great game.
This is, of course, not yet complete, but seeing what has been done so far, I have no reservations about recommending this to any fan of the board game version of Frosthaven or Gloomhaven. The features released have been reliable and accurate. One warning: Frosthaven is tuned to be considerably harder than Gloomhaven, so you may want to start on a lower difficulty.
