Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure is a point-and-click comedy that wears its irreverence proudly, presenting a deliberately unglamorous protagonist and a story that revels in bad decisions, sarcastic commentary, and gleefully inappropriate humor. Developed and published by COWCAT, the game follows Bjorn Thonen, an antique dealer from Paris whose life is a chaotic blend of laziness, incompetence, and questionable hygiene. When his apartment is robbed and a mysterious artifact disappears, Bjorn is dragged—reluctantly—into an adventure that spans streets, deserts, ancient ruins, and a series of ridiculous mishaps. Rather than framing him as a misunderstood genius or a reluctant hero with a hidden heart of gold, the game fully embraces Bjorn’s mediocrity. He is a comic disaster, and the narrative gains much of its charm from watching him stumble his way through a mystery that is clearly beyond him. The tone of Demetrios is unapologetically crude, cynical, and playful. The game constantly breaks the fourth wall, mocks genre conventions, and uses Bjorn’s own shortcomings as a consistent punchline. Its humor ranges from slapstick to sarcastic commentary, with moments of dark comedy thrown in to keep players off-balance. Even simple interactions—examining objects, speaking to strangers, or making choices—often result in unexpected jokes or grim outcomes. Death screens are numerous and intentionally absurd, encouraging players to experiment even when the consequences are fatal. This humor-first approach gives the game a distinct personality and sets it apart from more restrained adventure titles that focus on dramatic storytelling or subtle wit. It also means players who prefer dry or understated comedy may find the experience brash, while those who enjoy bold, unfiltered humor will likely find it consistently amusing. Visually, the game feels like a blend of comic book art and retro adventure aesthetics. Every scene is hand-drawn, giving the environments a bright, slightly exaggerated charm that complements the comedic tone. Characters are expressive in a cartoonish way, and the simple animations help keep the focus on narrative and puzzle-solving rather than spectacle. The user interface is intentionally straightforward: classic point-and-click mechanics form the backbone of the experience, with inventory management, hotspot searching, and contextual interactions shaping progression. This adherence to traditional design is both a strength and a limitation. It provides genre fans with an interface they will immediately understand, but it also means the game rarely pushes beyond established conventions of the mid-1990s adventure era. The puzzle design reflects that same retro sensibility. Most puzzles rely on a familiar chain of acquiring items, interpreting clues, and combining objects in sometimes absurd ways to progress. At its best, this leads to moments of genuine satisfaction when strange solutions click into place; at its worst, it results in the kind of obscure logic leaps that the genre is infamous for. The hint system creatively tied to hidden cookies offers a smart middle ground. Players who get stuck can consume these collectible cookies for increasingly direct hints, while completionists may take pleasure in finding them scattered across nearly every screen. However, the cookie hunts can grow repetitive, and players who dislike pixel-hunting may find this mechanic more of an obligation than a delight. In terms of pacing, Demetrios strikes a comfortable balance between narrative and exploration. The adventure spans several chapters, each with its own setting, cast of eccentric characters, and tone shifts. Despite its humorous framing, the story maintains a clear sense of progression, and the mysteries surrounding the stolen artifact provide enough intrigue to carry the player from one region to the next. The game is neither overwhelmingly long nor too brief; most players will finish it in around ten hours, depending on puzzle-solving speed and how thoroughly they explore optional interactions. The relatively contained scale helps the game avoid the bloat that sometimes affects modern adventure titles, though it also means it doesn’t offer the branching complexity or dynamic choices seen in narrative-heavy games. Ultimately, Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure succeeds by knowing exactly what it wants to be: an old-school point-and-click game with a loud, cheeky personality and a refusal to take anything seriously—not even itself. Its appeal hinges almost entirely on tone and writing; those who enjoy cynical humor, eccentric characters, and deliberately unrefined protagonists will have a great time. Those who expect sophisticated puzzles, innovative mechanics, or high-budget production values may find the experience uneven. But within its niche, Demetrios delivers a distinctive, memorable adventure crafted with enthusiasm, self-awareness, and a willingness to embrace the bizarre. It's a quirky, foul-mouthed romp that stands out precisely because it refuses to play by the rules of the genre it affectionately parodies. Rating: 8/10

I got this game cheap in a sale, deciding to give it a try. And was surprised by how much I had a really good time! I got really into finding the cookies and exploring every scene. I thought the lack of voice acting would bother me, but it didn't. I had fun with the mini games. And I found the story weird but fun. (I set toilet humour to mid at the start of the game and that level seemed absolutely fine to me.) The game hint system is really good, so there's no getting stuck. And I died tons of times, and loved reading the different things on my coffin. I recommend this game. It's fun :)

[*]Urination [*]Defecation [*]Emesis [*]Flatulence [*]Eructation [*]Spitting [*]Filth [*]Stereotypes [*]Ridiculous writing [*]Silly music and backgrounds [*]Simple mini games [*]A rude protagonist who's trying to screw over a lot of people (who are no better, for the most part) As for the cons... Uh... Some minor typos and graphical glitches after you browse the menu at certain times. A passion project all around and I loved every minute of it. Caroline is GOAT.
