First of all, I beg the developers: please add a map! And give the remaining races proper controls. Nobody needs new horns or wings until ALL races get usable movement systems. We also desperately need an option to disable inventory loss on death—not only is losing loot frustrating, but due to bugs, *quest items* still vanish into thin air. And finally, please add trading already. Now, on to the actual review (and it’s going to be a long one). I'm a new player, so my eyes aren't clouded by these 4+ years of development. I managed to try the game right before patch v0.5.5.0 and immediately after—and the difference is night and day. Now it actually feels like a game. The potential is insane. The reality: it’s a project made by beginner devs (with all the typical amateur mistakes) working with a budget that consists of their mom's garage, three buddies, and a sandwich. It seems the devs are balancing this with full-time jobs, and as someone with some experience in game dev, I recognize how grueling that effort is. The Good: Visuals: Beautiful models, pleasant animations, and nice stylized graphics overall. And, of course, a deep character editor. I really enjoy this art style. Massive Map: Three islands with interesting and pretty locations. A lot of environments look alien and mysterious. Lore & Atmosphere: Everything has unique names and strange terms. Combined with the bizarre landscapes and "head northwest" style quests, the whole game is soaked in the spirit of Morrowind. I keep getting nostalgia trips while frantically trying to remember what on earth the NPCs are talking about. (On that note, I wish the races were named using local lore instead of generic terms like "wyvern" or "European dragon"—it would add so much to the atmosphere). Patch Progress: The August 30th patch significantly improved island navigation, added proper movement controls to two more races, and brought new quests, dialogues, and QoL tweaks. Before this patch, I was ready to write a scathing negative review. If development continues in this direction (focusing on gameplay and dialogue), I'll be thrilled. Great Community: The player base isn't toxic at all; nobody harassed me on the official servers. Personal Note: Meditative flying and pure relaxation after a hard workday. Back in the day, I used to soar through the world in Divinity 2: Ego Draconis just for the sheer joy of flight. Here, I got all of that, but tripled. These are 6 solid reasons why the game is worth checking out for dragon lovers—on sale, or for 20€ if you're like me and want to support the devs. BUT keep in mind: development *will* be long. It’ll easily take another 4 years (or more) to reach a proper beta state, so consider that before buying. The Cons (and there are many): Bugs: Expected for an alpha, but still needs to be mentioned. Empty World: No dynamic or group events yet. I haven't found a reason to play multiplayer, and bumping into another player on such a huge map is a rare occurrence. Movement Needs Refinement: The wyvern and European dragon are completely fine right now, but they could be even smoother and more responsive (e.g., strafing from a standstill, more precise flight speed control). Meanwhile, races that haven't been ported to the new movement system are practically unplayable. Server Crashes: I was getting disconnected every 30–40 minutes, so I had to switch to single-player. Price Point: Objectively steep for a game at this stage. I believe the developers have good intentions, but from a player's perspective (unless you're a hardcore enthusiast like me), there’s little reason to pay full price at 20€. Very Raw Product: It's still heavily in early access. In short, I bought an admission ticket to an attraction for myself and my partner, who also found the game captivating. I'm looking forward to future updates and keeping my faith in the dev team—with reasonable expectations, of course. Hope this review helps!
honestly i love this game and it's community were wonderful but recent updates stripped my dragons of their level after an exp requirment update. this just felt so frustrating i put allot of effort into my dragons only to have those levels striped away. i'm unfortunatly going to have to step away for now after my short return to this discovery. for those looking to play this game it's is very visually pleasing, okay music, the ai enemies are a bit op and the level by their names holds no actual meaning to the power of thier hits. The community is very welcoming and helpful for the newer folks. please enjoy this game in it's current state.
For as many bad reviews this game gets, it really isn't that bad! While some people may not like the slowness of development, or having to wait for more quality updates to the game, I think it's definitely worth the money and the time. Online servers can be unfortunately quiet, some of the controls could be better explained, and it could use a ton of optimization, but the game is wonderful even despite those things. The models are beautiful. The animations breathe life into the characters. If you love dragons, love role playing, and love role playing as dragons, this game is perfect for you.
Excellent start to a game! While the community may be small so far, this has the opportunity to be one of the highest-end Dragon/Fantasy simulators I've seen. Haven't played for long (as of the time of writing this), but the open world and relatively easy base mechanics of the game make this game incredibly relaxing. High customization on the dragons, plus the fact that you can grind or you can just hang out, and it really doesn't seem to matter makes this one of my "go-to" games for a chill evening. More than that, intuitive controls and community helping along makes this game super easy to learn and play. The price is respectful of gamer's wallets (which I find particularly honorable), the game is good even in early access, and the devs show they really care about Quality over Quantity. For those of you patient enough to wait out the periods between updates, you'll be readily rewarded with top-notch quality content. I can even run this game on my potato pc [granted I have to turn down some of the beautiful visuals to do so :( ], which just makes it all the more incredible. 10/10. Community is creative and almost always engaging when I've played on official servers. And despite the warnings on the store page about frequent violence or gore, I can find almost nothing (as of writing this in Early Access) even remotely relating towards such. There is ONE npc that I've seen that is missing a hand (non-graphically), and the only "blood" is a mild spatter as you hit the crabs/spiders you can fight; if you're a parent reading reviews and worried about graphic content, I wouldn't be worried at all. (Edit: I did forget that sometimes you come across piles of meat from which you can derive food sources. However, it's hardly what I would label as "graphic" even then, its appearance looking fairly well cured and more like a basic patty of ground beef rather than a bloody corpse or anything.)
