Well, it's official, 20 hours in and I can say that the Dragon Quest III Remake is a nostalgic love letter to the NES classic. It's got that lush pixel art that meshes really nicely with new dynamic lighting, that coupled with the late great Akira Toriyama's art style makes this game truly beautiful. If you prefer a dynamic game with a very complex combat system, this isn't that. The gameplay here has that simple turn-based combat, cast spells, defeat monsters, explore a new town, repeat. Equipment boosts fairly standard statistics with not too much complexity. I have to mention Akira Toriyama's art again. The monsters are simple drawings but it works perfectly and their names are almost all puns like "Rottenweiler". It's easy to throw the game on for a quick 30-minute session, defeat a few monsters, explore a new area, then save at the church until next time. I haven't played a Dragon Quest since VIII for the PS2, but I have fond memories of "Dragon Warrior" on NES so it's nice to see this timeless adventure beautifully refreshed for modern audiences.

An incredible masterpiece of a remake. Honestly, there's no reason to even bother going back and playing any other version of the game, this is the definitive edition. Game looks amazing, plays smooth and the music is just incredibly immersive. Huge QOL improvements, definitely stream lined the game for more casual players but still, Dragon Quest shouldn't be inaccessible. The only reason this game suffered is because of hardware limitations at the time. The NES version feels like a forgotten relic from the past after having only stepped in to this breathtaking rendition of the game for merely a few hours. I couldn't be happier with it honestly. They added some Monster Wrangling class in the game and it almost seems forced that you have one for the majority of the game but it is what it is... it's an optional addition and not at all necessary for you to enjoy the game like you remember. People are complaining about a lot of the DEI stuff like removing Male / Female from the character choice and instead having type A and B... but meh... If you're worrying about these small hang ups, then there's definitely a more deep rooted underlying issue with why you don't want to buy the game. On a more positive note, anyone can be a Vamp now, including males or type A characters, so that's a huge plus as you no longer need to have a harem of female party members to get the most out of your stat gains. Unfortunately, there are other issues under the hood that need to be addressed with the use of mods. These include, but aren't limited to, increasing the speed of the ship / bird and how often you get in to random battles. It's nice SE allowed us to even mod the game so easily, you just grab a mod file and throw it in the mod folder in your steam directory and boom, there you go... no real convoluted 3rd party programs required. The predatory pre-order chest is an annoyance because it will forever taunt you in the character recruitment center but again, you can install a mod to open it and receive all the OP broken items on the start of a new adventure. There's really no reason to hate on this version of the game other than your own personal hang ups about DEI stuff. Everything else is still in tact like you remember it and they even added difficulty settings for the more hardcore fan who would enjoy a true DQ slog experience. Personally I'm just playing on normal mode and having a blast, as it's just the right level of balance for me. The QOL updates are a huge welcome addition, they make for a much more streamlined and smooth adventure instead of grinding XP until your brain rots. I definitely wouldn't pay full pop for it though, as much effort as they put in to this, $90 CAD for this is just insane... I bought it on sale at -25% off... I would wait for at least a 50% sale... especially with the other two games in the series coming out in October. They'll probably do a brack Friday bunduru and package them all together for a huge discount at some point. I feel like this game is going to be the one that shines the brightest because DQ I and II are much simpler in scope by comparison. It'll be nice to see the first DQ game in all it's HD-2D glory once again. Great game! Legendary franchise! Oh a jester badge? Thanks for the free points, we all know who the real clown is though. :)

Timeless classic got 5 star treatment. Graphics are incredible and the music maxes out the nostalgia meter. Be careful not to overlevel and the challenge will be perfect. I’d recommend trying to fight each boss as underleveled as possible once you have a nice repertoire of skills and spells. The party building mechanic is fun to plan out. I’d recommend this as a good entry point into the series. XI is probably the best in terms of full fleshing out the genre, while V has the best story with its own unique design elements that make it a classic (you have to play the orchestral version). III is just the first perfectly executed JRPG that built on the promise of the first two games, which were both too easy and too grindy (imo grinding is a chore not a challenge). There is actual game play depth here and a rudimentary story about living up to one’s father.

This game is a lot of fun and really hits the nostalgia button, especially if you played the original on the NES. My thumb's up is for the game itself. I played through the entire game on the "Normal/Middle" difficulty, and there were definitely some harsh difficulty spikes, particularly on bosses near the end. NOT the typical "I'm a late boss and I'm naturally difficult" kind of thing either. They are more of the "Oh did you bring the exact spells, gear, and strategy to counter me? If not -- good luck." variety bosses. Grinding helps, but that brings me to the next point: the multi-classing system is great but also feels like it can be a trap if you aren't sure of what you're doing and/or where you want to end up with the character, but the good news is you can just grind another one if you don't like the results. I ended up with something like 10 different characters in addition to the main character until I found a setup that really produced the results I wanted. I also don't like recommending this game at the full price point. I'd definitely wait for a sale. $60 is too much. I paid it. I don't regret it, per se, but I also don't think I can recommend it to others at that cost. It feels like they were trying to "get away with something" here.

I will split this review into two sections based on how much of a Dragon Quest veteran you are. If you're completely new to the series, this is a great jumping off point. The core gameplay the series is known for is here. There's a reason that people keep coming back and working their way through the catalog of 11 main games (not including the spinoffs). It's just a fun and pleasing gameplay loop. Combat is about as traditional as JRPGs come- there's no fancy combos or gauges. There's just towns, an overworld map, dungeons, and random battles. If you're not a fan of this classic JRPG gameplay, you might not fall in love with this game. Thankfully, you can speed up combat, and there are also several skills and items that can reduce the encounter rate. The story, in keeping with the original NES release, is minimalist, but they did sprinkle in some voice acting here and there and throw in a few cutscenes about your father's adventures through the land. The game's strongest point is the semi-open world gameplay and the class system. You can pick and customize your traveling companions from scratch, and then multi-class and stat them in different ways to build your personal dream team. The map opens up in a sort of metroidvania way, where getting a new key or access to a ship will open up different areas, but the game gives you some freedom in how you explore the map. Overall, it's a great representation of the classic/retro style JRPG game. It's also a remake of one of the most highly celebrated and beloved RPGs, the game that completely blew people's minds when it came out on the NES. I think it's worth experiencing if you're in any way into video game history and if you at least like the RPG genre in general. If you don't like RPGs, there's no need to force yourself to try to like this game! If you're more experienced with the DQ franchise, then you absolutely need to give this remake a try. It stays relatively true to the classic but keeps a lot of the QOL from later more modern DQ games like the fan-favorite Dragon Quest 8. The graphical update is handled very nicely. The world is lush and colorful, and you get to enjoy the environments as you explore every nook on your scavenger hunt for item in barrels and finding all the mini medals. The iconic monsters also look very nice. If you've played DQ3 before, either on the original NES or even the SNES update, this game has plenty of homages to the original, and it can be fun to seek out all of the secrets from the original and seeing them all kept and reinterpreted. DQ3 is one of the most replayable entries in the series because you can start with a completely different party and try different builds, and the game isn't so punishing that you can't just have a little fun and make some odd combinations. Overall, I highly recommend this game to people who are fans of the DQ series. If Square Enix continues to keep releasing these high quality remakes, they can expect to keep taking my money.
