An interesting game, held back by its extreme difficulty. This would be a "Neutral" review if that were an option. Recommended for tower defense enthusiasts, not recommended for completionists. Most of Dungeon Warfare is engaging and rewarding, but some design decisions left me baffled. The endgame leveling curve is painfully slow considering how little reward it offers, and certain stages (especially The Mountain) feel disproportionately harder than the rest of the game. This absolutely should not be a game that demands 100+ hours to complete. Of my 122 total hours played, around 30 were spent grinding Endless mode on various stages just to gain XP, along with dozens of failed attempts to clear The Mountain with 8 runes enabled. That left a bitter taste at the very end of what was otherwise a good experience. Because of these absurd design choices, I won’t be trying Dungeon Warfare 2 or 3.

Got this on sale for around $2 and it's probably one of the best value for the money games I've ever bought. I enjoy tower defense but I almost wish trap defense was it's own genre. This game fills the seemingly rare niche of using traps instead of pure towers. Most tower defense games have some building off to the side shooting an occasional arrow at passing enemies but this game, like orcs must die in away, has them standing in front of flamethrowers, being pushed off cliffs, and ground to pieces. The game has pretty basic graphics but it works in its favor in its own way. The low graphic requirement means any computer can probably play this as the multiple hundreds of enemies are trying to rush to the core. The game also has a mild villain protagonist theme. The levels are pretty varied and a lot have quite a few ways to win them. The game does have some downsides but these will vary depending on what kind of gamer you are. There are a lot of levels to play, by the middle of them I was really digging into how I could come back to beat the level without losing any lives or with some runes on, but by the end of the last level I'd just had my fill and didn't have any desire left to replay any levels. The first missions feel really limited because you don't have many traps, but at later levels you'll probably have a handful of traps you always bring so the game starts to feel a bit same-y. The game has a pretty hardcore subset of fans that will try and set records on the infinite mode or beat every mission with 10 of the runes (optional modifiers that give an exp multiplier but come with a downside like making enemies stronger/faster/heavier or limiting traps, lives, etc) but without self imposed challenges it was one and done for me, still there's plenty here. The levels vary greatly in difficulty, towards mid game you'll start getting people that rush fast enough to set off some traps without being hit, later still you'll get horse riding enemies that will absolutely blaze through your setup if you're not expecting them. Some maps don't let you set up a single killbox by joining the paths, others will have what basically amount troll setups, like having a pit that seems like it'd be great to use but then turns out the level is entirely made of people that will outrun any push or spring trap. The bonus casino stage has special units that are so high in hp they're basically pointless to try and kill with damage and you're best left tossing them off the cliffs. A few levels had flying enemies that are immune to most traps and pretty unfun to play against. If you're a fan of trap based game this one is definitely worth the price.

Easy to recommend Dungeon Warfare, a "Juicy" Tower Defence. I hope you like it with bits in, because your crunchy enemies will be squeezed, squashed and shredded to a pulp! ✅ Plenty of content and options. ✅ Satisfying, physical combat. ❌ Difficulty can be a bit inconsistent. Dungeon Warfare has plenty of options, with a range of towers, upgrades and methods for success per map. It's very satisfying creating a solid choke point or gleefully pushing your pixelated foes to their death. Difficulty is mostly good with the odd map that feel's a bit too easy and a couple of difficulty spikes, but there are options to enable runes to increase difficulty (or decrease and disable achievements), or you can switch up the game slightly with an Endless mode, very handy if you want more experience for upgrades. May your traps be springy and your enemies squishy!

It's a bit long in the tooth but this is a very enjoyable tower defense type that is better than most. There is a lot of fun trying all the different way to beat a level and since you can really alter the traps dynamically for each mission it's a lot more fun just experimenting!

An unassuming game that does a lot of things right and practically nothing wrong. Doesn't really have a strong gimmick to make it stand out in the Tower Defense genre, it just pulls it off really well. Fairly challenging too.
