A MUST FOR STAR WARS FANS. The love and detail poured into the Republic at War mod alone is enough to please even the most autistic star wars fan. Count Dooku was a visionary. Please buy this game.

Most games have you take the POV of the Rebellion so it's a nice change to play as the Empire and crush the Rebel scum

Easily one of my favourite games of all time. Especially the capital ship combat in space! Needs a remaster ASAP!

A great game that today is largely kept alive by a highly dedicated modding community, with several outstanding mods available, though the base game still holds up well on its own. At the time of release, this was one of the if not the most innovative RTS titles, and it does an excellent job of honoring its source material in terms of quality and presentation. My actual playtime is probably well over 600 hours. I originally owned the boxed version of both the base game and its expansion and only purchased the Steam edition after my discs were damaged. The game offers three distinct RTS gameplay layers that blend together seamlessly, all of which are further expanded in the Forces of Corruption expansion. There is a galaxy map mode where you manage planets, direct armies, and handle strategic decisions. Combat is split into two parts space battles and ground engagements. Space combat allows you to command fleets, target enemy ships or specific subsystems, and micromanage encounters to gain an advantage. Ground combat is more traditional RTS fare, with squads of infantry and vehicles under your command. Notably, you don’t construct buildings during battles beyond a few limited defensive structures placed in specific locations combat relies entirely on the units you bring in from the galaxy map. Visually, the game is still impressive for its age, especially the space battles. Destroyed ships breaking apart, burning, and exploding remain satisfying to watch even by today’s standards. The musical score fits the setting well, though it could benefit from a few more original tracks. The main drawbacks are minor compatibility issues on newer versions of Windows, which can occasionally lead to crashes, and some awkward unit pathfinding particularly in space combat. At times, getting ships to move exactly where you want requires extra micromanagement and careful clicking. Overall, this is an excellent RTS that I can confidently recommend, even at full price. If you’re interested primarily because of the popular mods, I strongly suggest playing the base game first. While a bit clunky due to its age, it provides essential knowledge and context. Many mods are more complex, more difficult, and lack tutorials, as they assume a solid understanding of the core game mechanics.

Been playing this since it came out. OG PC version with disk. My hours in Steam are low compared to true hours played. Almost 20 years and the MOD community is still keeping it alive. It has evolved much over the year's and new playthrough's still surprise me. I will always come back from time to time and conquer or free the galaxy. Yes it's old and outdated. It is the will of the Force that I continue to play. I shall do as I must.
