Many people have pointed out that a game about a painter has little to do with the player actually painting. But it's so much more than that. I loved the quiet, slow exploration of this world and its people. Yes, you can eventually unlock fast travel or travel around faster with a bicycle. But even after unlocking those, the world was so beautiful and whimsical, I didn't want to go too fast. And I think that's the point: to slow down and notice the little things, to appreciate them, to savor them. And when my only quest was to leave Eastshade, I felt truly sad. Because, yes I could boot the game back up again and restart. But I'd never have the joy of experiencing this game for the first time again. So no, this game is not about actually putting color on a canvas. It's about experiencing the world through the eyes of an artist; Slowing down, experiencing beauty in little and big things in the world, and trying desperately to capture it, only to fall a little short because it's the experience that's matters.
Life Changing The best compliment that I can pay to this game is that it affected me more as an artist than almost any game I've ever played. Because of this game I have bought a table saw, wood, canvas cloth and have begun learning how to make my own canvases. I've taken up acrylic paint when previously I had only down pencil, digital, and some minor watercolor. I would have never even thought to try to make canvases but now I'm learning and loving it. The Actual Game I wanted skyrim but peaceful and reddit sent me here. "We have Skyrim at home." isn't an out of place impression that this game initially gives off, and certainly it has some of the jank that goes along with that comparison. However, what it lacks in polish it more than makes up for in heart. This game has character and a world that makes you want to learn more about your surroundings. Plenty of time can be spent soaking in the environment, the characters, the little story threads running through and around interconnecting with one another. The game at times feels unfinished, even narratively. That being said it is an experience I find myself returning to again and again.
This one will stay with me for some time. Basically like an Elder Scrolls game (most of all Oblivion) with only the sidequests. It's very well written and charming, and lovely to look at. No combat, so some might dismiss it as a walking simulator, but if this is your kind of thing, this will very much be your kind of thing.
Very pretty first-person exploration game in nature with friendly humanoid animals. This is not just a walking simulator and it's not really a fantasy RPG although it feels like an Elder Scrolls game (Oblivion, Skyrim) without violence. There are quests, but it's mostly finding who to talk to, finding items and very simple crafting. There are a few riddles that are a bit unintuitive, but they're not so bad and I think they might be optional. A big deal is made out of painting, but other than the satisfaction of finding the correct spot, it's very simple and basically taking screenshots, which was a bit disappointing. Almost everybody is kind and helpful and there's no fighting so the experience is quite cozy and relaxing. The scenery is often gorgeous and is a joy to walk around in. The outside lighting is nice, but the characters are badly lit, if at all. I wish the animal characters had more distinctive facial features. As it is, it seems like every species only has one or two heads, and there's only five species. At least, there's different body sizes and clothes, and the writing is well done so that compensates. The music fits the theme and is very pleasant. Eastshade is like a small countryside town you would want to visit every few years to unwind and forget about modern life.
I played for 33 hours and even near the end I was still discovering paths I'd never been on, buildings I'd never been in, and characters I'd never encountered. Beautiful visuals; I painted some that weren't part of any commission or quest because I wanted to save them for my own collection. I don't usually play as a "completist", worrying about achieving 100% on everything, but I was enjoying this game too much to not want to complete every quest, paint every commissioned painting, visit every section of Eastshade.
