The story is confusing and the combat feels like it's designed around you just tanking damage and healing through it Skyrim style, but if you can get past those issues, what remains is an excellently designed Zelda-like with very pretty pixel art, likeable characters, fun puzzles and one of my favourite video game soundtracks of all time. Not sure why people have issues with the pacing - I never really felt it was dragging except for some of Chapter 6 out of a total of 8 chapters. There's also an in-universe JRPG spoof game which actually has a really fun gimmick and is so good that I would honestly pay around £5 for it on its own. I thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough. Just be careful if you plan to 100% because there are a LOT of dumb missables.

the best way to describe Eastward is 'a perfectly well executed mess' the game has flaws, like the story's pacing or the kinda lack luster gameplay. so i'm gonna list off some of the pros and cons of Eastward PROS probably the most appealing aspect is the art direction the games art work is INCREDIBLE if you couldn't tell by the trailers the games art team clearly had a blast making the game expressive, and the color work is outstanding! and the environments are clear and pop! and the characters are just a joy to watch! other PROS are that the story is (at times messy) but very nice! yeah... its not like a award winning masterpiece or anything... but when i finished the game and the credits started to roll i sat back and said to myself 'wow that was a dang good game' which btw i say to games that i really liked some other notable PROS are the sound design, music, (which i have personally added to my playlist) and the bosses are definitely good especially the one you where have to parry to win like a souls-like boss. near the end of the game and the writing/humor is definitely good and it did get me few chuckles(fish) now for the CONS the games gameplay is pretty uninspired and lack luster... like the gameplay is not "BAD" but it definitely is the most weak part of Eastward the gameplay is basically a mix between a puzzle (specifically a sokoban) with a hint of the old zelda games and sometimes the puzzles do get a bit annoying and tedious as for the difficulty... its basically non existent (aka easy as balls) and as a mentioned the story is a very messy with a pacing issue and a the ending is a bit rushed and leaves on a bit of a akwardish? note (although personally i didn't find it akward i can see some people finding it akward) and sometimes the story did leave me a bit confused at times so would i recommend this game? short answer yes but only if can look past the flaws of the game. and if you do, this really is a hidden gem of a game! as the for the dlc i haven't played it yet so when i do finish it i will update this review additional note: the game dose have a weirdly adult themes (if you know you know)

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD GAME!!! Why's it having so many BAD REVIEWS??!!?? - The design and artwork is AMAZING! - The levels are fun, mechanics are interesting.. we get to learn them in unique ways too ( Ex: Sandrupe potcrab area teaches you how to hit the bombs or stones ) - The in game music just feels so good to my ears lol - The bosses are interesting - We get new enemies in each zone so they are unpredictable - The lore is crazy good (it doesn't make sense but it also does) - I even liked monkollywood because it was a goofy break before things got serious again The only thing I didn't like were those weird sexual jokes o_o Sure we don't get to go back to an area we've cleared and John doesn't talk much but... but these don't hurt so much to give this a bad review !

I wish Steam could give a neutral rating because this game is really a mixed bag. I'll try to be fair and give both the negative and positive. The main problem is a big one, but afterwards I'll show what I did like. Main problem --------------- Everything is held back by a horrendous pacing issue. Someone needs to keep the narrative designer in check because the man is a maniac. They've added the functionality to fast forward through conversations/cut scenes and at a certain point I made the conscious decision to keep that button pressed during 90% of the dialogue. I'm sad to say that even though I skipped all of that dialogue, I was still perfectly able to follow the story. If I were to distill the pacing into a Gen Z sentence, it would be a resounding "Bro's yapping". The absurdity was raised to another level when, in the penultimate chapter of the story, I was still asked to play mailman and deliver letters to 3 random people in town. When I'm asked in a game where it feels like the length has been stretched artificially, to repeat certain tasks over and over again...well, it feels like a slap in the face. The absolute audacity to force me to do errands after I've been skipping 20min of dialogue. It shows a total lack of respect regarding my time. So...why did I finish it? ------------------------ The artwork is absolutely exceptional. I've never seen pixel art as atmospheric and beautiful as in this game. Level; character and boss design were next-level. Even though the combat lacked diversity and I found it overall to be easy, I enjoyed solving the puzzles and I applaud the creativity shown during the 'dungeons' in the final chapters. It's just a shame that only 10% of players will experience it... In the end I found the story to be pretty ok, but it's held back by the pacing. Without the fast forward button, I would've never had the patience to finish this. The way they explain things in the end, could've been resolved better. They really had to trim the fat and I hope they'll learn from this mistake for their next game. That's why I still recommend this game. Because the talent in artistry and game design is clearly visible here and I want them to get enough funds to learn from this and make an exceptional game next.

I do recommend this game after years forgetting to buy and play the game, but here some downsides: - the dialog is just way too long, i feel like they dragged it out, i appreciate their attempt to put characters personality into dialog but i'd like to see more effective dialog - story is a bit too nonsensical, so many things left unexplained, maybe for the sequel to flourish with - a lot of fetch quests, for most of them could be justify by the story, but still if you hate to see it, they will be there
