This game hails from a pre-Lords of the Fallen and pre-Sniper: Ghost Warrior era of CI Games, when they were much better known as a maker of reasonable quality budget games. And that's what this is: it's a low-budget game that doesn't shoot for the stars, but does hit its targets with reasonable enough accuracy. This game was put together on a low budget, so nothing is going to be the Best, but what is here ranges from Okay to Pretty Good. Nothing will blow your socks off, but everything gets the job done. It's a $20 game that frequently goes on sale, and if you go into it with matching expectations, I think you'll have a fun time in a relatively pretty, pretty easy, neatly plausible excuse to dome digital Nazis in the head with a variety of iconic wartime weaponry. And that's really what life's about at the end of the day.

First and foremost, I want to say that this game IS what it looks like: a generic Call of Duty/Sniper Elite inspired WWII shooter. That is what you pay for, and that's what you get. THAT BEING SAID. I enjoyed the campaign of this game a lot, especially the second half. I normally don't write reviews, but since this is a smaller game and I liked it a lot, I thought 'why not?' There will be some SPOILERS ahead. ==Gameplay== For a game released in 2014, it has great gameplay. Guns, of which there are many, even ones never seen in franchises such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, sound good, with the Stg44 being one of my favourites. There could have been more, but for the length of the campaign there was enough variety. Sometimes it felt like the sights were not aligned perfectly, especially with sniper rifles and AA guns, but I could also just be bad at aiming, so take that as you will. The game takes obvious inspiration from Sniper Elite V2, with the bullet camera and the V2 rocket level, and during this level I did feel a sense of dejavu, the rest of the game is original enough that it is not jarring. In terms of movement, everything you need is there: crouching, sprinting, even sliding. In terms of stealth, there is a lot of that in this game. It is always optional, and there is no failstate if you are spotted. I like to stealth in games, and Enemy Front gives you plenty of tools for this, maybe even too many. One level sees you carry a silenced pistol, submachine gun AND carbine. On the other hand, detection sometimes feels unfair, but if you are detected by one soldier, you still have time to kill him before the entire level is homing in on you. As far as variety is concerned, there is a lot of stealth, some sniper segments, and CQB. Still, you are free to fill this in as you see fit. An optional secondary objective also gives the player more choice, although often they were already on the path to the primary objective, so there wasn't as much chocie as I would have liked. There are some collectibles, but I only interacted with them when I happened to stumble upon them. ==Story== Overall, the story of Enemy Front is not fantastic, but it serves well enough as a device to show off different theatres of WWII. I extremely appreciate having a game set in Poland during WWII, as this nation is often overshadowed. The events of the Warsaw Uprising could have been better explained, but it works well to show an event that for many players will be unknown. The 'day-trips' to France, Norway and Germany (?) are also good. The main character, even though he is quite shallow, does experience significant character development, but I think it could have been better if he sacrificed himself at the end. Perhaps that would make the game cliche, but there are already a lot of those and thematically it would work better. As for historicity, the game does not feature out of place weapons (looking at you BfV and CoD:Vanguard) and you can tell the developers cared about the authenticity. German soldiers have meaningful conversations in German, that have some details sprinkled in for the attentative listener. (My personal favourite was a conversation about putting food in the gas mask cannister, something soldiers would actually do). It would have been cooler if resistance members, wether Polish or French, would have spoken their native language in the background, but sadly this is not the case. The themes of the uprising, extermination by the Germans and abandonment by the Soviets do shine through, but are not brought in focus as much. ==Conclusion== I would wholeheartedly RECOMMEND Enemy Front for players interested in a relaxed shooter game with historical authenticity, especially if it is on sale
