ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West is a game that feels like an underappreciated gem. Developed by Ninja Theory and loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, this 2010 action-adventure combines elements of post-apocalyptic storytelling with rich character development and a unique blend of platforming and combat. Set in a future ravaged by war, ENSLAVED introduces players to a world where humanity has been reduced to ruins and machines now dominate the landscape. The story follows two unlikely companions: Monkey, a tough but reluctant hero, and Trip, a smart and resourceful woman with a personal mission. Together, they embark on a journey across a decimated world, filled with robotic enemies and crumbling cities, as they attempt to escape the oppressive control of a sinister force. The game's narrative is its beating heart. Through compelling dialogue and strong character arcs, Monkey and Trip evolve from mere partners in survival to a complex, meaningful relationship. It’s not just about fighting robots—it’s about discovering humanity, forgiveness, and the will to survive in a broken world. At its core, ENSLAVED is an action-adventure game with a healthy mix of platforming, exploration, and combat. Monkey’s agility and strength make him a solid choice for jumping, climbing, and fighting through the game's beautiful yet dangerous environments. Combat is simple but effective, with a focus on fluidity and combos. It's not as deep or complex as some other action games, but it does offer satisfying, visceral battles against both human and mechanical foes. One of the standout features is the dynamic between Monkey and Trip. Trip may not be as physically powerful as Monkey, but her tech skills come into play during puzzle-solving and environmental challenges, giving the game an interesting cooperative dynamic even when you’re essentially solo. The visual design of ENSLAVED is breathtaking. The world is a juxtaposition of nature reclaiming what technology destroyed. I was surprised to find such a lighthearted action-adventure tucked within Ninja Theory’s portfolio—the same studio behind the intense Senua . This title, though rooted in the familiar settings of its era—a ravaged cityscape, linear levels, and mechanical enemies—manages to set itself apart with unexpected charm. Despite its cartoonish character designs, the voice acting is remarkably mature, supported by well-crafted facial animations and a complementary duo dynamic: the classic strongman and sharp-witted heroine. The combat—built on a rhythmic punch-and-roll system—feels distinctly Ninja Theory , while the platforming elements lend a welcome break to the action, injecting just enough playfulness into its otherwise formulaic world.

A hidden gem from the 360/ps3 era. Narrative focus and great voice acting with likable characters. An interesting take on The Journey to the West. Simple, but fun combat and just long enough to keep you invested to the end. If you miss a more linear experience in a game, give this one a shot. This world is more interesting than most of the open worlds we see today.
