I've debated if I should recommend this game or not, and I've decided to recommend it HOWEVER I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the glaring flaws of the game, which is important if you are deciding to purchase. Yes, the game is early access. But early access does not negate it from criticism. One of the first and most noticeable issues you will encounter as you explore this beautiful world is that its not exactly easy to get around, which has a simple solution from the developers should they decide to go this route. You cannot make your horse jump unless you're in a race and going over a jump designed for the race. This creates frustrating situations where you're getting stuck on the smallest ledge, you cannot continue, and you must go around. Sometimes going around the obstacle takes you a good ways away from your destination, and its very annoying. The map is gorgeous and dynamic and massive, a lot of the gameplay loop is simply exploring this map. So when you can't explore without getting stuck on a small ledge, or a fence forcing you to turn around, or coming to a halt because of a tree stump, it really pulls you out of the immersion. Having the ability to simply jump (like our characters can on foot) would alleviate a lot of these frustrations. Second, the minimap. As you're going around doing quests, you'll look to your minimap to guide you to your destination, but you might have a hard time identifying where its pointing you. That's because most of the indicators are all in a range of pale yellow to orange, (aside from side quests being blue) which blend in far too much with the color of the lines around the minimap. I would much prefer them to be more noticeable. Third, lets talk about the gameplay loop. Personally, I enjoy the current gameplay loop but I don't think its for everyone. After you complete the first chapter, all you have to do at that point is races, and weekly quests. (Not sure why they're called weekly quests, they come in a batch of four and once you complete those four, it gives you four new ones with no end in sight) These quests follow similar fashion, go out and explore while you collect certain items, or go talk to someone, pick something up and bring it to someone else. And thats pretty much it. The purpose of these quests is to gain reputation so you can purchase cosmetics, but it takes a great deal of time to increase reputation which leads to this gameplay loop being incredibly grindy, at times annoying because if the inability to make your horse jump small objects, and the ability to get lost easy as the indicators on the minimap can be hard to see. Thats not even mentioning the character creator, which is the last negative I will be going over in my review. I've noticed a lot of games these days where the lighting in the character creator is not at all reflective of the lighting you will see in game and Equinox: Homecoming is no exception. Thus, you don't truly know if you like the look of your character and your horse until you're in the game, and you cannot change the appearance once you do enter the game. This is downright frustrating. I do not understand why the character creator has such harsh lighting and I do not understand why we cannot change the look of our horse and character. It feels downright deceitful and it needs to be addressed. And I haven't even gotten to the horse creator, which feels rushed and ugly. There are three horse coats to choose from, which are fine for now (except for the champagne coat being forced to have a black mane) some pinto markings, leg markings and face markings. The pinto markings are diabolically bad. There are 3 tobiano markings, and it looks like someone spray painted the horse in MS Paint with no care for what a tobiano actually looks like. I cannot fully express how god awful the tobiano markings are, which does not align with the face markings and leg markings. The face and leg markings look great, its clear a lot of care went into them, so why did they spend 30 seconds making the tobiano markings and why is it so ugly. The roan markings are almost impossible to know what its going to look like in game because of the lighting in the horse creator, and the sabino markings are just pathetic. The regular bay coat doesnt even have white markings, and should you chose to add white markings on the regular bay, they're not white theyre more of a tan, light brown. And it genuinely looks horrible. Its clear that the body markings for the horses were cobbled together in a short time span with no regard, and that needs to be addressed. Simply put, the game needs more content outside of the main story and a stronger gameplay loop. It needs quality of life improvements, and the character creator needs to be overhauled entirely. I hope that the developers take their time working on these systems before launch. And yet, I still recommend the game. Yes, there are a lot of negatives, yes the game is brand new in early access, and yes, the game has a LOT of work to do before its ready to ship in full. However, I do not regret my purchase for one moment. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Alderwood, I am eager to log on and grind my quests, I am eager to gain reputation and unlock new cosmetics. I love being fully immersed in this beautiful world. The music is just incredible, the world feels alive, and I am SO excited for the future of Equinox: Homecoming. That's why I'm harsh and critical. Because I really want this game to be good. It has limitless potential, and its filling a much needed gap in the market: a horse game modeled for an older audience. A horse game that is willing to take on darker themes, a horse game that is acknowledging the millions of adults that are passionate for horses that have had to make do with games geared towards kids because its all that's available to us. I want a game like this, and I want it to be good. I'm excited to be in on the early access, I'm excited to watch it grow, I'm excited for feeling like I have a voice in the direction of the game, and I truly do hope that the developers take the time to listen to what we have to say and to deliver on what they've promised us. All that to say, yes I do recommend this game.
