This is silly but fun. Not too grindy. Days go by well. Treating the postal truck like your own personal GTA vechicle is perfect. I keep finding awesome places to launch it from. Finally got around to finishing it. There are varied endings depending on your choices. Me? I let them go free on their adventure.
This review contains spoilers. What a fun game! Now here's a bit of a weird feedback on it - despite voting YES on "Do you recommend this game", I don't actually recommend it. Let me explain. I had fun with the game but not for the reasons the developers intended. The game had an annoying bug, where I couldn't turn off the radio anymore (even from the settings, I just had to turn down the music completely, as the radio buttons stopped working). Another annoying bug was in the latter half, where every day started with "Return to the Post Office". Anyway, no biggie. Ignoring these, the game was enjoyable becaaaaause... I played it as I would do things in real life. I'm an introvert. Some stranger needs help with something? Best of luck, I'm reading. Some old friend wants to reconnect? Hello, but I gotta go. Someone makes me feel bad for avoiding them for 22 years, then asks me out? Ohhh, I'm busyyyyyy. Made plans to see someone, forced by that someone? Ohhh, so sorry, something came up. Junkies want to share drugs? Nope, ew, go away. Boss needs me to work during my time off? Nope, not doing it. I didn't play as a jerk. I played as a post-person. I delivered the post, I don't have time for your videostore scheme. Besides, it's illegal. So I had a lot of fun tending to my duties. Frank was breaking the rules? Well, that's Frank's fault, I will tell the truth about everything. Lumberjack guy wants to save the forest? Best of luck, buddy. Here's the thing... at the end of these two weeks: - Old lady was fine - Lumberjack saved the forest - DJ added new songs - Diner thrived - Had sex - Frank came back happy as ever - My parents moved to Florida and gave me their house - I got a free RV and the junkies went away - Got promoted AND got a higher salary ...and all of this WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING :)))))))))))) I laughed my head off at the end, when the radio announced "Well, we're all going to miss you, such an impact on our community bla bla" - I was like, dude, I don't even know who you people are! I didn't talk to anyone more than the game forced me, and I didn't participate in any activity :)))) So I had fun, that's why this game gets a positive review. But I wouldn't call it a good game. It's very pretty, good voice performances, pleasant ambient music, good radio songs (not to my taste, but they're well chosen) and a unique little idea brought to life. But yeah... as far as the story goes... I didn't do anything, everyone loves me at the end, and got a salary increase. 10/10 would ignore people and keep being an introvert again, anytime. Thanks!
There's bad escapism and there's good escapism, and this game is definitely of the good variety. I love games which actually put you in a situation which feels honest and real. This game, of course, could be construed as simply "the Mailman Simulator" and left alone, but as far as simulators go, this one is very pleasant and soothing. Taking place in 1986, in rural Oregon, more precisely in the town of Providence Oaks, you play as Meredith, who comes to PO to help out her dad, taking over his work at the local post office for a couple of weeks. At first, it feels a bit janky. Why am I driving around in a post truck? Why do I even care about the people of this town? Why would anyone leave work at a big tech company and come here to idle about? But as soon as you get going, listen to a song or two on the local raido, actually talk to the characters around town and help a couple of them out, apart from doing the daily mail rounds, you actually feel deeply immersed in the daily slice-of-life experience that is "Lake". For me, that's what seperates it from games like Eurotruck sim or grocery store sim and the like. It feels like a real place, the town dwellers feel like real people and when you play "Lake" you actually are there, petting Mildred's cats, trying desperately to pick up the local lumberjack (although the swaggy fisherman/vet would be my choice), discussing retro movies and songs, life, family struggles and long lost friends. All of this ties neetly into the gameplay and I honestly feel very good turning on the game for another shift of postal work in Providence Oaks)
You can pet the cats. It's a fun game, the story is short and sweet being contained to two weeks of in-game days. The endless mode is appreciated, although I haven't had a chance to really dig into it. My only two, incredibly minor, gripes are that you can't adjust the height of the follow cam and the radio is a bit repetitive. However they do cleverly address this in the game, and you can always pop on a podcast/YouTube video/Twitch stream/80's bangers like you were probably going to do anyway. Give it a go.
