The name "Exo Rally Championship" may elicit images of futuristic, fast, arcade racing with a gimmick or two, like GRIP or Wipeout or POD or SCARS. Even if you assume this is just basically a racing version of Elite Dangerous' rover driving, it's still probably not quite what you'd think. Firstly, XRC is more of a sim racer than your average racing game, featuring complex physics, a detailed damage model, extensive tuning options, and an emphasis on something few other racers have to consider: planets. Indeed, not only you will have to consider the track ahead of you, but how the gravity, atmosphere, and terrain composition of each planet is going to factor in on your runs. From dodging trees while sprinting across the forests of New Earth to struggling for grip while racing on the Moon, Exo Rally Championship concerns itself less with white knuckle racing and more with, essentially, piloting a space buggy as best as you can through different astral bodies. (But also do it fast). Secondly, there's the races themselves: Despite having "rally" in its name, the courses in this game aren't like the ones you'd expect on something like DIRT: Each race consists of a number of gates you need to clear in order, but how you navigate to each of them is up to you; this is less "space rally" and more "interplanetary Dakar". At the start of each stage, you will have the chance to take a drone through the upcoming circuit for an amount of time, during which you will be able to leave markers and trace lines that will later appear during the race, and while there is no copilot, rudimentary pace notes will be displayed on top as you move through gates. Being able to choose where to go and how to better tackle each section is incredibly satisfying, although I would appreciate the ability of being able to leave more specific markers or notes. Probably the standout gimmick among all of XRC's quirks is that the buggies come equipped with RCS systems that not only can help control your vehicle while in the air but also can be used to help accelerate, or to push your vehicle into the ground to improve your grip. These thrusters have limited fuel and can overheat though, so they become a valuable resource to manage throughout a race. The game is perfectly playable on a gamepad, but it supports force feedback on wheels, leading to players adopting the slightly goofy "steering wheel in one hand and joystick in the other" control method that is nonetheless quite unique and fun. Each "planet" consists of a sizeable patch of predetermined terrain that the courses are drawn over. The main course is the campaign, following a rookie pilot through a number of rally championships involving different classes of vehicles with different characteristics and features; and while they're big enough for each course to be relatively unique, you will definitely start seeing certain sections repeat as the game advances. Regardless, progression is quite meaty, with your traditional super lengthy championships through whose you will have to strategize tire wear, RCS fuel and repairs, as well as a number of events and randomly generated daily courses. Overall the amount of content is reasonable, but I wouldn't hate having a few more maps per planet, and I'm having hope for the modding community to deliver on that front. The game performs well, though it's not going to dazzle anyone with some amazing graphics or something. It's average to functional and it definitely betrays a certain "budget" feel, but I will readily take this to bad performance, so hey, for 25 bucks on release there isn't a whole lot to complain about here. Overall, Exo Rally Championship is like, the niche of the niche of the niche, a videogame so specific and off the wall that it kinda circles back into being a great stepping stone for anyone who isn't familiar with these kinds of games. While more on the linear side, and a bit inscrutable at times, it is definitely a very unique, addicting and somewhat chiller paced racing game that, for the most part, focuses more in the endurance aspects of its races rather than playing each track perfectly. 7/10.

This is a game for a very specific type of person. A very hardcore person. While it does not immediately look it, this is one of the most sim heavy racing games out there. This includes: Drive physics, Destruction and repair, Car tuning, Terrain and weather, Route planning, RCS control. As an example; everything on your vehicle can break, even the follow cam can break. traction is per wheel to the point of if you drop half of your wheels onto ice you will feel the them fail to hook up while the other side still is pushing forwards, dragging you to the side failing to make power. Tires can puncture, break, and even have the whole wheel go missing. On top of this the arm holding the wheel can break too. This goes a level further in that now you are missing an RCS thruster, which now creates angular momentum when they fire as the thrust is now uneven. That is just the car physics and not all of it. This does not even touch the tuning you can do. You can plot how you want to get from point to point in this space Dakar style rally game. Every track is just points on a map that is 10km^2 and there are 5 of them. The benefit of this is that you can even create your own tracks, meaning there is a fair amount of replayability. Every time you unlock a new driver level (and car) you get new tutorials, this teaches you slowly how to drive. This also stops you from having to learn everything about the 6 wheeler right away. I have never driven something so complicated.

For those who are into racing you just need 2 words: "Space, Dakar" Now for those who have no clue what I said buckle up for peak, this is gonna get bumpy. This isn't a normal rally game, it is what would would be under the umbrella of Rally Raid where instead of getting to the end of the stage on some back road you are in bum ♥♥♥♥ neptune and have to race to a series of points. The handling is very in depth being easy enough to pick up for beginners but hard enough that it takes hours to master if you really want to crank up the difficulty. As for the current state of the game there are 4 vehicles that all handle differently, also 4 different championships/seasons, and 5 different planets/moons. I for sure recommend this game.

Ever since the demo in 2022, I've anticipated this game, and the full release is far more than my wildest dreams could have imagined. It's rally racing, down to dealing with damage, tire selection and wear, prioritizing fixes during limited service stages, etc. It's space. RCS thrusters with limited fuel help you get through stages on terraformed planets, rocky-dusty meteorscapes, seismically and volcanically active danger zones, and THE MOON. YOU CAN RALLY ON THE MOON AND IT'S REALLY HARD. On top of all of that, it's stable, optimized, and I haven't found a single bug, a rare breath of fresh air in the modern age of early access releases. If any of this sounds remotely interesting to you, this is your game.

Ignore my low playtime currently, I've played a good bit in the playtest version pre-release. This is one of my favorite racing games of all time, and that is saying something given how many I've played already. I've been wanting a racing game focussed on realistic physics that doesn't involve driving GT3s around Spa or Monza for a decade now, ever since I started sim racing. ERC finally delivery a really fun to drive and tough to master rally game set in on very varied alien planets. I really hope it does well enough for us to get more content over time! I really love how this game brings back a bit of the feeling Dirt Rally had when it first released and I was still pretty inexperienced with rally driving. Some of my favorite details: Your drones can get damaged, which disables third person cameras. Damage is quite detailed, but less harsh than in the original demo. The opponent portraits look really cool and make me wish I knew a little bit more about the world. And the game has daily races similar to Codemasters games, so there is always something to compete in. Some of the daily challenges only allow you one attempt, which has always been my favorite way to compete in rally games. Also, works perfectly on CachyOS!
