Compared to the first game, Fallout 2 is a direct upgrade. More weapons, more armor, new companions. Funny, creative dialogue and a great story. The game is rather difficult from the beginning, but plateaus later on. While Fallout was a bit more bleak, Fallout 2 is more humorous and FULL of pop culture references. (Monty Python, Star Trek, Terminator....), which sometimes feels out of place, but I honestly enjoy it. Game has great replay value and I always make a yearly pilgrimage to finish it again.
Restoration Project for cut content & Talking Heads mod. Dont forget to install these. How many times did I finish this game? Way too many and I am still mad with love, there is something satisfying about dismantling and sometimes abusing Fallout2. Every encounter, every companion and gear upgrade feels good. Every quest with multiple solutions or failures. Be good or evil in vast apocalyptic world. Shape your future. Yes its my fav game of all time and I've beaten all mods: Nevada, Sonora, Resurrection and Olympus 2207 each one of them is worth playing if you like this game. PS: Still waiting for Mutants Rising :)
Damn near perfect CRPG. The humor hasn't aged as well as New Vegas's, for every hilarious moment there's some real "wow the 90s was a different country, huh" moments, but this game swings for the fences in ways that stand out from just about everything else, and does things with the mechanics and environmental design later installments won't or can't accomplish. Most prominently is the presence of Jet in the game: it's not just a consumable buff potion you anachronistically run across in pre-War lockboxes, it's an incredibly destructive drug that's ravaging the population centers of the wasteland. My character took Jet once only for me to discover that addiction is both highly likely even with one dose and permanent, and much of the rest of the game was shaped by my character being gripped by this vice. In fact, withdrawal was so crippling that I found myself making some dark choices, culminating in my character sleeping with a fellow addict in a ratty casino suite just so he could suck the inhalant fumes out of her mouth. That sticks with you.
