This is one of those games that has a ton of heart. But polish? Nope. The combat is extremely boring at best. 90% of the fights in Arcanum are against filler trash mobs that you can't skip, unlike Fallout. There is barely any encounter design in the entire game. I played a technologist gunslinger and they were hilariously weak compared to melee or magic characters. Luckily I followed guides so I knew how to craft the best items in the game, otherwise I might have quit out of frustration. The combat and balance are the game's biggest sins by far. The story is pretty good. The setting is amazing. A fantasy world going through an industrial revolution? Pure narrative gold. The main villain of the story is very intelligent and conniving, which I always like. I don't think he holds a candle to villains like The Master or Jon Irenicus, who feel a lot more sad and pitiable, but I appreciate that he has a philosophy that drives him to commit terrible acts. It's just good writing. With a couple more years in the oven I think this could have been one of the greatest games of all time. It's definitely worth picking up if you're willing to stomach bad combat for good story. I think it's a 6 or 7/10. I hope it gets a sequel one day.

Would I reccomend Arcanum? Ehhhh, it's complicated. I'm leaning towards Yes, but only if you meet a few criteria: - You enjoy Fallout 1 & 2 and wish to have a similar itch scratched (as the game was made with Tim Cain as project lead, in a very similar engine.) - Combat is not very important to you and you're willing to slog through it. - You don't mind long paragraphs of text. If you meet those criteria, you will absolutely love Arcanum. It's a rich world full of lore and intrigue and a genuinely fascinating and memorable story. The amount of content it has to offer is absurd, rivalling modern RPGs, and is incredibly well written. The side content is often just as good as the main story, and the amount of possibilites you have for different builds is quite frankly baffling in it's scope. This is a masterpiece that's hiding behind a clunky engine and pacing issues, but anyone who appreciates the qualities I mentioned in a game will find a lot to love.

This game feels outdated and rough around the edges, but it still delivers the depth and freedom you expect from a classic CRPG. If you can live with the clunkiness, it is easy to get pulled into a rare, unforgettable RPG world.

WARNING: THIS GAME REQUIRES YOU TO REALLY ENJOY GRINDY OLD RPGs That said, this game is EXCELENT. The Character Systems are unique and interlocked, The world is greatly full of secrets, great writing, cool side experiences and a world full of lore that really felt alive, for its time. I am blown away by the layers of writing and hidden text options for a game of this age. It really attempted to push the envelope on what a cRPG. I secretly hope someone picks up and runs with the IP since it would definitely stand out in increasingly D&D-based fantasy games. That being said, it also desperately feels unfinished. Some of the mechanics (Traps and turn-based combat) have major issues and wandering around the world, there are less than 100 places to explore--most small encounters tied to a side quest. (You'll still spend 30+ hours finding them). Dungeons are badly designed and hard to complete on your first playthrough. You'll find yourself save scumming often and there's a good possiblity of making mistakes if you're not reading carefully. If you find yourself struggling, Try turning it to easy difficulty for a minute as this just increases exp gain and changes little to the experience. Also, Installing the Unofficial Patch is tentamount to having it run well on present operating systems. Also, Save often and create hard save points throughout as glitches will often ruin runs or the fun.

It's great this game is available on Steam - I remember having the demo from a PC Gamer Magazine [UK]. HOWEVER, the game WILL REQUIRE you to hop over the workshop or fan forums to get running (and stay running) with patches as it hasn't been optimised for Windows 10 / Windows 11. 7.5/10
