Its actually disgusting how people brush this game off as too old. Its aged incredibly well for something that came out in 1997 and is a must play if you like the other fallout games. Even if you're not sure you'll enjoy it its always worth a shot since its like ten euro/dollars and you could get it for two during a sale.

Miss, miss, miss… you have been killed. It feels like many of my favorite oldschool RPG experiences have started exactly like that: just me fumbling through the world, dying over and over until things finally start to click. I mean yeah, it can be frustrating at times but it’s just as satisfying once you finally get it. Fallout 1 was my introduction to the series and from the very beginning I was absolutely hooked. The atmosphere is heavy, oppressive and absolutely perfect for a post-nuclear wasteland. The characters feel like real people just trying to survive and the world feels hostile and dangerous. Even the crunchy, pixelated isometric graphics feel right. For me they aren’t a limitation, they’re part of the charm. They make the world feel gritty and lived in, which only deepens the immersion. Honestly, this artstyle works so well for this setting that I worry a little about transitioning to the fully 3D entries later on lol. (New Vegas looks right up my alley though) And my god, what a world it is. The world-building honestly blew me away. Fallout’s setting is endlessly fascinating: it’s dangerous, strange and super easy to get lost in. It isn’t about the 1950’s, it’s about the future that the 1950’s anticipated. It’s a game that takes place in the future of the past. So yeah, I can absolutely see why this series became so beloved. Technology, storytelling and graphics have advanced dramatically since Fallout 1 came out, but this game proves that you don’t need cutting edge visuals to deliver a visionary experience. The premise of Fallout is simple but brilliant: you’re a Vault Dweller sent into the California wasteland to find a replacement water purification chip. From that starting point, the game nails every element that defines the series’ identity. I also appreciate that the search for the water chip is on a real in-game timer. That pressure adds weight to your decisions. You can fail. You can get a bad ending. You can fight your way through every problem or you can talk your way out of nearly all of them. The game is packed with little details and deep systems that make exploring and experimenting genuinely rewarding. It’s a masterclass in roleplaying freedom. If I had to complain about anything though, it would be the combat. It’s not bad, but it can be painfully slow. Even at the highest animation speed, long fights with multiple NPCs can have you just staring at the screen, waiting for everyone to take their turns. But ngl, party members killing me (or me accidentally killing them) was equal parts frustrating and hilarious. Yeah, saving often is crucial in retro RPGs. Overall, Fallout’s writing and tone are incredible and the gameplay makes the wasteland feel like a place you really have to survive in. The atmosphere, the mechanics and the story all click together so perfectly that it’s impossible not to get pulled in. For my first step into the Fallout universe, this was everything I could have hoped for.

It's kinda like Star Wars in that no matter how good some of the sequels were, and how much I love it, part of me kinda wishes the Fallout series ended with the first one. Not even close to perfect, but nothing beats the first playthrough. Steeped in atmosphere, awash with interesting artistic direction, this is a game made by people with genuine vision. Everybody needs to play it. It's not even that hard, back in the 90s it was assumed your average gamer could just jump into a game like this with nothing but a manual and their wits. World's gone soft, I'd say.
