Fatum Betula will be something very special. Designed as a (very) brief story adventure with light puzzles and low-poly graphics, it's the type of game that will frustrate as many people as it will amuse. I'm in the center; although I enjoy the effort and aesthetic, I'm not sure I could fully suggest it to the typical gamer. Additional Info: Content & Value I completed Fatum Betula in 4.1 hours after acquiring every achievement in the game. For those who want achievements: This game is quite easy to 100%, escpeially with a Steam guide, but it takes like 30-60 minutes to find the first ending if you're really slow Mode Single Player Only Controller Recommended? No, this is perfectly playable with KB+M Is it worth buying? In-Depth Story & Details The "story" is short and I mean it when I say "short". It may just take five minutes to complete one ending. Replayability is crucial in this case, as it encourages us to go through the story several times in order to see all of the endings. However, because I didn't really get the purpose of the game, my first session lasted a little longer. But when I found it out, I watched ten endings for nearly every possible way in less than two hours. I was immediately intrigued by the surreal feeling in the first place. I won't spoil an already short experience by telling you that we find our first hint in our inventory. After that, we're kind of abandoned in a little space to, well, find what we find. There are surprisingly many interwoven components that let us reach those many endings, even though there are just a few regions to explore about. While some are clear-cut, others require some rational thought—though I would emphasize the word "little bit" in that remark. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3478722407 This isn't your typical story adventure game. Instead, the emphasis is on narrating a brief, abstract story that is as confusing as it is. At times, it seems a touch excessive, with the strangeness element in one place being a little cheesy in the sense of "we just put this in here to be odd." Overall, the other sections perform better, and although the topics and conversation had a melancholy tone, I did enjoy how the book included clues about how to complete the easy puzzles. Even if these clues aren't the most subtle in the world, they were worded so effectively that I didn't dislike them too much. We are given cutscenes that can only be characterized as being between odd and fever-dream-like after figuring out what we need to reach an ending. While some attempt to give them a deeper significance, others are just...weird. It is designed for people with special taste, as I said. However, the low-polcy graphics are by far the most obvious selling feature. As an old-school gamer, I can recall a time when 32-bit graphics were the finest available, and Bryce Bucher has done a near flawless job of maintaining the vintage look. It plays and looks precisely like the Playstation and Saturn games, complete with chunky textures, polygonal warping, simple models, and even a 4:3 display. Although I'd hesitate to say it looks excellent, I liked this appearance and how effectively he executed it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3475278996 The 1995 interface that accompanied the graphics, however, is what I didn't like. Even a five-minute game may be frustrating due to an unnecessarily complicated menu structure, and even loading a game is a little confusing (we have to launch a new game, press F5 to save, and then flip the not-so-clearly-flickable save toggle to load to continue from a save point). Although interacting with items only requires pressing a single button, there is a degree of guessing involved in determining what we can and cannot use or interact with. Once again, representative of the time period, although not quite as welcome now. Conclusion That's not to say I didn't find Fatum Betula enjoyable. Once more, despite the strangeness, I like the vintage visual aesthetic and was curious to see what the next ending would hold. It is fortunate that it is so brief, but again, I'm not sure I could suggest this to anyone who isn't really interested in esoteric, disconnected experiences. You can try it out easily because it's short and unique, especially considering how "low" the price is. However, be ready for a lot of questions... perhaps that's also why I found it so enjoyable. Uniquely weird – 7.5/10

I think it'd be difficult to find a game that better captures the spirit of indie games quite like Fatum Betula. Solo dev, chunky graphics, a world that's objectively small but feels way bigger due to some clever decisions, and a really, really strong vision throughout. I agree with a lot of the reviewers that say it's best to play blind, but I'll say that the secret ending is a must-see, and it's worth using a guide to see it if you can't find it on your own.

Fatum Betula is a very small game, but due to its multiple variations of how to do things it feels much larger. This is something I enjoyed about it, as it made the exploration feel worthwhile and I felt like I always discovered new things in each accessible area. It's very much a moment of "You feel like you know a whole area by heart? Wrong, you haven't found this particular thing yet!" which feels rewarding in its own way. There's a story. No, it's more a concept that the game builds upon. You have a tree (the birch), you choose its fate/future/whatever you want to call it. How? That's what the 10 multiple endings are there for. Each ending explores a subject, while you interact with the surrounding game world and its characters that you meet. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's topics such as existentialism, generational trauma and similar which themselves are all up for various interpretations. There are no enemies in this game. You cannot, by typical game means, die or get a game over screen. Your actions are yours only, and depending on those actions you are destined for one of the endings. I heavily recommend this game to anyone into horror puzzle games.

Thank you to Sophie who recommended this game after saying that my short story collection reminded her of it, which now playing the game I have realised how much of a huge compliment that is :) Such a gem of a game. The atmosphere is so thick and lulling, completely serene yet uncanny. Atmosphere, feel and being able to get sucked into the world is what I adore most about games and Fatum Betula achieves that wonderfully. My only regret is after a while I became caught up in getting endings and feel I did not take in as much of the game in as I would’ve liked to, but that’s a personal problem in wanting to consume games that really tickles my brain right. So yes, play the game blindly and explore for much longer than I did is my suggestion. I’m not going to go on here as not to spoil as much as I’d love to word vomit about every detail- but I ADORE games like this and I’m so happy I played it. BELOW IS A MILD SPOILER My one and only direct criticism is the file editing achievement. Please. Grandpa nearly had a heart attack trying to get through even the simplest technological mumbo jumbo. I’m sure there’s other grandpa-heads who feel the same- I’m trying to keep this lighthearted but it really REALLY irritated me. Maybe I am in a small percentage who has very low technology-knowledge but still… damn. If my review sounds groggy it was because of that achievement. To not end on a frustrated note, I HIGHLY recommend the game, I cannot put into words how nauseatingly beautiful it is. If you were one of those kids who used to mix shampoo and other bathroom items into potions, this is the game for you.
