One day you will find a hole in your heart I suppose you haven't ever felt like you are failing to accept entropy. No, you haven't and none of us ever will: this river is taking us all down, one way only. Lethe shouldn't have an echo, that's the whole point of forgetting. The river is endless but we are not. What if this wasn't the case though? What if your existence could become impossible? Would you then push the envelope off the fringes of the sweet hereafter or would you poison the future when boredom starts to sting a little too much? Atlas was forced to carry the sky for eternity. Just imagine how bored he is right now. He wasn't given a choice though. Where even meaning can become meaningless You start the game with a system in balance desperate to be thrown off balance. How will you do it? And why? I noticed that Fatum Betula is tagged as horror but that is not true, except if the definition of horror is stretched so thin to encompass eeriness, an uneasy feeling or existential dread. Personally, I would describe Fatum Betula as an exploration game, relying heavily on its atmosphere and dream-like quality to narrate a story which is simultaneously simple and convoluted. This last part is perhaps the most brilliant thing that Fatum Betula has to offer, mostly because of its thematology. Of course, the PSX era aesthetics and an amazing soundtrack both allow the story to take root and give form to its fleshy bark and low-polygon, bony branches. The typical 3D pixelated look of similar indie games is employed by Fatum Betula as well, and it made me appreciate once again the term low-poly art . Bryce Bucher, the game's creator, brought the game to life by depicting incandescently its small world and the characters that it consists. Ok, a certain cat-looking raccoon is a peculiar inclusion but jokes aside, I found that everything was designed with a befitting sense for the scope of Fatum Betula's story. The music serves an amazing role into bringing this dream-like atmosphere to life. Like a mantle that rests upon the shoulders in perfect symmetry, it envelops Fatum Betula's story. A fitting soundtrack for the game's world: even when it appears to be soothing, it remains suspenseful and at times it turns sinisterly disturbing, mirroring the ambiguity of a dream and the dissonance of the nightmare. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3647827704 What if Atlas could embrace entropy and was allowed to send the skies crashing down to earth, burying all the Rivers once and for all? Would he do it? Perhaps he would. Perhaps he would choose to keep shouldering the burden. Out of love for the mortals. Out of spite for the mortals. A synecdoche was used, somewhere. Go out there and be real I wonder what the Birch's Fate will be!

when you encounter an exceptional piece of art, no matter if it's a game, movie, music, literature, etc. I believe that you can't represent or tell what that work made you feel to someone or for yourself again, you can add on to it with a review, interpretations and retrospectives but you'll never capture that emotion and moment again. when i finished fatum betula i immediately wanted to recommend it and started thinking what to say about it to interest people on the game, i can compare to similar works and compliment it to infinity but trying to translate what this game can make you feel into words is impossible, every attempt would diminish its impact. so please, just play it, maybe it won't resonate with you as it did with me, and that's okay, but i do think you should experience this game.

Fatum Betula will be something very special. Designed as a (very) brief story adventure with light puzzles and low-poly graphics, it's the type of game that will frustrate as many people as it will amuse. I'm in the center; although I enjoy the effort and aesthetic, I'm not sure I could fully suggest it to the typical gamer. Additional Info: Content & Value I completed Fatum Betula in 4.1 hours after acquiring every achievement in the game. For those who want achievements: This game is quite easy to 100%, especially with a Steam guide, but it takes like 30-60 minutes to find the first ending if you're really slow Mode Single Player Only Controller Recommended? No, this is perfectly playable with KB+M Is it worth buying? Yes, even without a discount if you love these type of games Follow our Curator page, [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32732116/] IndieGems , to see more high-quality Indie reviews regularly. In-Depth Story & Details The "story" is short and I mean it when I say "short". It may just take five minutes to complete one ending. Replayability is crucial in this case, as it encourages us to go through the story several times in order to see all of the endings. However, because I didn't really get the purpose of the game, my first session lasted a little longer. But when I found it out, I watched ten endings for nearly every possible way in less than two hours. I was immediately intrigued by the surreal feeling in the first place. I won't spoil an already short experience by telling you that we find our first hint in our inventory. After that, we're kind of abandoned in a little space to, well, find what we find. There are surprisingly many interwoven components that let us reach those many endings, even though there are just a few regions to explore about. While some are clear-cut, others require some rational thought—though I would emphasize the word "little bit" in that remark. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3478722407 This isn't your typical story adventure game. Instead, the emphasis is on narrating a brief, abstract story that is as confusing as it is. At times, it seems a touch excessive, with the strangeness element in one place being a little cheesy in the sense of "we just put this in here to be odd." Overall, the other sections perform better, and although the topics and conversation had a melancholy tone, I did enjoy how the book included clues about how to complete the easy puzzles. Even if these clues aren't the most subtle in the world, they were worded so effectively that I didn't dislike them too much. We are given cutscenes that can only be characterized as being between odd and fever-dream-like after figuring out what we need to reach an ending. While some attempt to give them a deeper significance, others are just...weird. It is designed for people with special taste, as I said. However, the low-polcy graphics are by far the most obvious selling feature. As an old-school gamer, I can recall a time when 32-bit graphics were the finest available, and Bryce Bucher has done a near flawless job of maintaining the vintage look. It plays and looks precisely like the Playstation and Saturn games, complete with chunky textures, polygonal warping, simple models, and even a 4:3 display. Although I'd hesitate to say it looks excellent, I liked this appearance and how effectively he executed it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3475278996 The 1995 interface that accompanied the graphics, however, is what I didn't like. Even a five-minute game may be frustrating due to an unnecessarily complicated menu structure, and even loading a game is a little confusing (we have to launch a new game, press F5 to save, and then flip the not-so-clearly-flickable save toggle to load to continue from a save point). Although interacting with items only requires pressing a single button, there is a degree of guessing involved in determining what we can and cannot use or interact with. Once again, representative of the time period, although not quite as welcome now. Conclusion That's not to say I didn't find Fatum Betula enjoyable. Once more, despite the strangeness, I like the vintage visual aesthetic and was curious to see what the next ending would hold. It is fortunate that it is so brief, but again, I'm not sure I could suggest this to anyone who isn't really interested in esoteric, disconnected experiences. You can try it out easily because it's short and unique, especially considering how "low" the price is. However, be ready for a lot of questions... perhaps that's also why I found it so enjoyable. Uniquely weird – 7.5/10
