March 2025
Fera: The Sundered Tribes is a prime example of an effective use of early access gaming. The devs are very upfront with their revenue, where it goes, and how all of it comes from steam sales. The game is currently in a very playable state, with an obvious need for more polish and content. The current price of $9 is incredibly fair, and offers a unique blend of several styles of games. First and most obviously, Fera is absolutely an indie Monster Hunter clone. You use large weapons with different combat styles and damage types to fight large monsters, so that you may gather resources from them to craft better weapons and armor. Currently, there are only four weapon types: Greatsword, Axe and Shield, Spear and Hammer. Each of these weapons have a full skill tree you develop them with, unlocking new attacks, increasing damage and attack speed, etc. The very fun traversal mechanics separate Fera from Monster Hunter, and offer something that the latter doesn't. You have a strange magic grapple ability that is at first difficult to understand how it's working. It's not just a quick zip to your target: it allows for some interesting swinging, spinning and slinging around based on your inputs. You can grapple onto points in the world to throw you around at high speeds, but you also can grapple to monsters, which open up combat greatly. Weapons can either be used while swinging around, to do an instant zip into the monster for a lot of damage, or to cling to the monster and directly attack specific points on the monsters. This system is a little tricky at first but incredibly fun once you get it. It offers much faster gameplay than what Monster Hunter offers. On top of the grapple, you also have glider wings that you can use to fly around, which feels very floaty and nice. In conjunction with the grapple, you can move around very fast and with ease. The current map isn't massive, but big enough that the wings and grapple are very welcome. Outside of traversal and combat, Fera offers base building and colony management with the tribe system. Each tribe member you find can be assigned to crafting, cooking or resource gathering stations to unlock and/or speed up production. Additionally, tribesfolk can be brought to you in the world with portals to gather resources for you and your colony. This makes getting resources in abundance a rather quick process, which I always appreciate in a survival crafting base builder. I've thoroughly enjoyed the time I've put in so far, and I feel a lot of the negative reviews are simply malicious, and otherwise unfounded. This game is not abandoned at the time of writing this, nor is there any plan to be. Comparing such an indie game to the well-established AAA IP Monster Hunter is unfair. They're asking for 9 bucks for a game with a ton of passion behind it. MH Wilds is asking 70 bucks for a terrible story, equally repetitive combat, and clunky UI's that don't clearly explain anything. To review this game poorly based on that game is hypocritical plain and simple. I truly believe in this game and hope the dev team the best of luck getting to 1.0

Writing a positive review out of respect for the developers. Truthfully I am not 100% sold on the quality of the game, and truthfully from what the devs are stating they aren't quite satisfied yet themselves. The developers are being super transparent with how much they are making from the game and I respect that in a big way. I hope that my contribution provides them some motivation to keep going at get the game to what they hope for it to be. Now to talk about the game, I am truthfully quite torn on how I feel about the game play. I've personally never noticed any of the frame rate/optimization issues that others seem to complain about. The things that I have noticed tho is that combat just doesn't really impress me? There are only 4 weapon types and you unlock more attacks for them via leveling up and spending skill points on each weapon separately. There is a basic light attack chain and a single grounded heavy attack for every weapon, to my knowledge there is no "mix-up" the attack chains if you will. I find this makes a lot of the combat kind of bland. Now you can unlock other attacks via the skill points that let you use your heavy or light whilst either grappling, being airborne, or being latched onto a monster, but I don't honestly feel like these made combat better for me, in some cases it actually made combat more boring? Like for example in on fight I just spam grappled a monster going airborne and then evading immediately after, it made the fight feel trivial. I will admit I still am somewhat early in the game so maybe the later monster will be more punishing to that sort of play style and I may actually find myself in a dance of combat that I like to see in a monster hunting game. Or perhaps it will start to feel more shadow of colossus as I remember noticing players atop massive beasts, I am open to that concept as well. But for now from what I experienced the early, smaller monsters are not all that satisfying to fight. One thing that I find somewhat annoying as well is the monsters don't really feel like they are a part of the ecosystem. All the monsters are just aggressive to you there is no territorial struggle there is no monsters hunting other weaker monsters, if you run into two monsters regardless of their species potentially being different both of the monsters will treat YOU as their enemy, this becomes especially annoying when one of said monsters is flying with a projectile attack. So whilst you are trying to hunt the grounded monster for a material you need for progression the flying monster is bombarding you with attacks. The survival game mechanics are fine, I like that I can open a portal for my village to come through and process materials for me. But at the same time I think there are to many scenarios in which I have to wait on them do that. My biggest grievance with this is that to get monster specific parts I have to build a carving table of sorts BY that monster and then wait for my villagers to carve it up for me leaving a portal open for them to work on their carving. This personally slows things down for me in a way I do not appreciate, because not only do I have to wait for the villager to carve the beast but I will then have to wait again once I go to turn those parts into a new item. I think I wouldn't mind this whole sequence as much mind you if I didn't have to keep one of my 3 portals open for a villager AND spend materials building them ANOTHER carving table, I'd rather they take some time returning the beast back to base camp if anything where they can carve the beast there rather than having to make me spend extra materials building a carver every time I hunt something. All this is to say I have high hopes for this game, I truly believe this is a team that WANTS to make something great, but they will need time and investment. I fully believe they have a vision and I wish for them to achieve it. Best of luck to you "Massive Damage."

The most potential I have seen out of an indie game in a long time. The game is an incredible piece of Art with beautiful graphics, ridiculously fun gameplay, unique monsters, and a very inuitive system that will surely develop beautifully in the future. Points to make: Graphics: 8/10 Graphics wise the game is stunning. The Art Style is absolutely gorgeous with extremely well done shaders and beautiful models. The world and environment is incredible and the lighting is on the cell shaded characters is just awe inspiring. Technical Artist...You did an incredible job Performance: 6/10 The game is a powerhouse to run to be honest. Fairly unoptimized but not to the point of unplayability. If youre looking for a smooth silky experience, you wont find it yet. But if you can handle stutters here and there its a very playable and fun experience (4050 Laptop here) Gameplay: 8/10 The gameplay is what really sold me on this game. I am a 20 year monster hunter fan who loves everything that those games do and represent. If youre looking for a Conan Exiles mixed with Monster Hunter experience, you will find it here. Part Breaks, Wak points, damage types, mounting, Knockouts and trips. Its all there. But the place the place gameplay REALLY shines is that Tether mechanic. Holy moly is it ridiculously fun to use. It takes some getting used to and practice to get good at but man once you get where you can fling yourself around monster like no ones business, the game feels like your playing Attack on Titan. I had a moment where I tetherd off of a rock spire, flew up into the air, tether back towards the ground of of a flying creature, and the slammed into the monsters top half of its body with my axe causing tons of damage. This mechanic has SO much potential Jank: 10/10 My wife could not get enough of watching me fly through the air and float around all over the place as I played. The game has MAD skyrim vibes with its jank between the inconsistent ragdolls and hilarious physics engine. Dont get me wrong this is not a bash at all. But if you are willing to shill $10 just for the amusement of getting flung around by your tether or monsters, the game is so worth it Summary: Buy the game. Play it for an hour or 2. Leave a review. Tell some friends. Save it for later. The game is not finished. No kidding. But if we expect the game industry to be better, we have to be part of the change and that means not bashing and dismantleing everything small game developers stand for. Big companies dont care about feedback. They dont care about employees or players. They see dollar signs. That is not what Fera is. The developers are passsionate and who SO SO SO much potential. Develoopers if you see this, dont let the world take the wind out of your sales. There is a community here that will absolutely follow you. You guys can do this and should keep doing it! I am SOOOO Excited to play this game when it comes out for 1.0 and will gladly pay full prices a second time if you give me the option to

Still needs work, but is very promising. It is worth the price to help the devs finish the game.

So I have lots to say. I got the game, because I met a couple of the developers at UnrealFest. They were very nice and left an impression, so I wanted to support a fellow dev. Pros: Huge world. It's awesome how much there is to see. Beautiful vision. There are a lot of cool systems and I can see the vision. It is just in a very rough state. Cool shaders. They're very unique and it is pleasant to the eye. Dynamic World. I like everything going on from the tribe to the enemies to the harvestable materials. Fun Treasures. The random loot in cool locations discovered is very fun. Cool gear. I like the look of most of the gear. Fun blend between action, adventure and sim. Tether. The tethering system is very fun once it is upgraded. Being able to swing around is very entertaining and getting to the tops of spires by swinging is fun. Weapons. The weapons are really cool and the hotkey is a great addition. Cons: Music (combat music to be more specific). It's a short loop that really could use some improvement on length or style Enemy Aggro range (Affects Music issues). The enemies could use a reduction in their aggro range. I find it hard to have peace and enjoy the ambiance of the game, when I am hearing the combat music looping every 30seconds for 10-15min. Enemy attacks. The flying enemy (Razorwing?) has the projectile shoot through collision. Combined with the enemy aggro range this leads to extremely frustrating combat at times. The projectile having an onhit event checking for non-playercharacter and destroying would be really awesome. Flight combat. It needs a lot of refining. I do well with action movement, so I don't get sick. But friends have watched and they get nauseous from the tether launching me everywhere as I try to defeat a flying enemy. The tether pulling them to the ground like a net, or something would really improve the combat with flying enemies. Stamina. I get it and I agree with it. But the world is so vast. So beautiful. And I would just like to fly longer. There are the neutral creates to help with travel. But just reducing the amount of stamina taken during gliding flight would be awesome. Just for more time to enjoy the views. Collision. The large mushrooms don't all have collision, and in a "oops" kind of way. There are also small foliage in area that have collision that really shouldn't (Ground flora surrounding some of the ruins). This also goes again in tandem with the flying projectile issue. Often beasts collision capsule will be in a different location than where their death animation mesh lands, so harvest tables can't be built in a lot of spots. Sounds. I entered an area (wind ruins? (An adult Venomhide(?) spawned there)) and the audio got so INTENSE. There was a wind sound that I believe glitched? and it was playing so intensely that my headset auto kicked in attenuation and shot my volume down to 1%. The noise of some things could use improvement. Portal makes a generator type noise as if it sees a revolution, but would maybe be a more perpetual type of harmonic sound, and the creatures make a bit harsh of noises. Combat. The combat is cool. I enjoy it. I think that there is an issue sometimes with server connectivity and the enemy will hit me, when they didn't, or I will hit an enemy, when I didn't. And there are a lot of times enemies shove me through collision on buildings and the ground. I think that the portal system has saved me more than a few handfuls of times, so Thank you for that. Anyway, that is my shpeel. The game is cool. I enjoyed my time. I think the vision of this game is beautiful and I look forward to how it will play a few years from now. I think it'll be a really cool game that people will love. But it is still in a very rough state and I personally think that some cleaning up of the current state would really improve player experience. Thanks for working so hard and keep it up! **Edit** I would love to see an additional information box give details on where to collect a certain plant. The monsters already display what type of crafting ingredients they drop. So I'd love to see the same. There's a bug with the villagers needing a portal called in camp treating crafting like it isn't nearby. Maybe they just need their perception range increased? Maybe a Navmesh issue?
