I have over 1.6k hours in Stardew and 100% perfected it, so when this game was announced, I was over the moon and picked it up on Day One. Now that I've played it for over 100hrs, I can truly say that this has surpassed Stardew for me. The gameplay is unique enough where you don’t think it’s “Yet another Stardew Valley clone”, like so many farming simulators are. If anything, I’d say it’s more in tune with early Harvest Moon whimsicality albeit more polished with a beautiful Shoujo-esque art style. The characters are fun, quirky and are actually worth talking to every day, the aesthetics are phenomenal, the mechanics and story so far are stellar. You can actually hear the impact you have around town through the words of the community, which is a rarity in these games, I’ve even had actual belly-laughing moments while talking to some of them! The mining (which I usually loathe in these games) is surprisingly enjoyable and with its RPG elements and satisfying reward system, it’s a breath of fresh air that really adds to the game’s individuality. Dare I say that I... *yearn* for the mines? The devs are always improving and it’s clear how passionate they are about both their game and the feedback from their audience. While I do wish the patch cycles were a bit shorter, I’d still take a 3–4 month cycle over half-hearted, lazy updates just to keep players quiet. Before Update 3, I actually skipped Update 2 so I had more content to go through and I'm so glad I did, I'm having such a blast with it. I recently read a critique against Mistria's environment is more of a utopia where everyone is kind to one another and I asked myself: "What is wrong with that?" I actually enjoy how easygoing the characters are, not everything needs to be all doom and gloom all the time. If I want a "gritter" farming sim, I'll go to my old pal Stardew Valley. Sometimes I just want to kick back with my steam deck and farm the day away. I genuinely have nothing negative to say (which, again, is rare for early access titles) and I can't wait for marriage and children to be a part of it. Judging by how the team have implement other features, I know they'll knock it out of the park once is added into the game. I love this game so much, it's become my new favourite cozy farming simulator. ♡ Now excuse me, Caldarus is waiting for me! (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶) ♡♡♡ (or March... orrr Celine... maybe Reina, I'm not sure yet...)

This review is going to be quite a bit more critical than most I've read through, so I'm first going to say that I do really enjoy what the game has to offer so far. My overall rating as a full game would be about an 8/10, and that's without being complete. Considering its EA state, 9/10 is probably more appropriate for me. At the time of writing, I've played through the middle of year two summer and the last major update was the March 2025 update, so the review may be out of date if you're reading in the future. I'm going to split this review up into sections mostly based off skills, with a select few other sections for relationships/music/art/etc. Without further ado, let's get into the review. Relationships/Socialization - 9/10 Going into the game, I had heard the most about how good the socialization is in this game. And I think it's safe to say that it (mostly) lives up to that. The most significant improvement over a game like Stardew Valley is how often the other villagers talk to each other. It's most noticeable during Friday Night at the Inn, which has groups that have ongoing storylines that change periodically as to not get stale. But even outside of that, if you see two or more NPCs next to each other, you'll often find them talking to each other already. It's a really nice touch that makes the world feel more lived in and more like an actual town. Outside of group conversations, NPCs will commonly talk about things that you're currently doing like quests or about items you've recently donated to the museum. All in all, nothing but great things to say about regular socialization Where I feel FoM suffers a little is actually in the set scenes. Currently the heart events only exist for romanceable NPCs, and they feel a little lacking. Considering festival spoiler Festival of Stars has explicit romantic implications that unlocks at 4 hearts, there's shockingly little romantic progression/implications in most of the six heart cutscenes. Outside of heart events, the 2 of 3 festivals also are a bit underwhelming. The Animal Festival is quite good and feels like an actual event, while the other are very flat. Farming - 8/10 Satisfying in the same way that Stardew Valley is mostly. Item pickup needs to be quicker and a little wider. Overall, but particularly noticeable in farming once you get a particular skill later. Crop prices could use some balance. As it stands, it's always better to go for the regrowable crops. They're so much better it's somewhat ridiculous, both in profit and effort. There's eventual automation to help grow larger crop fields, but they're frankly somewhat bad in the current update. Late game spoiler: And the sprinklers cover a 5x5 area bizarrely. Why is this not 6x6 to match with gold tools? Hopefully this is addressed in a future update, along with more permanent sprinklers. Fishing - 6/10 Very little to say, just that I find it lackluster and just a time filler. It's fishing in the same vein as Animal Crossing, which isn't my cup of tea. But some might prefer this to an actual minigame like Stardew has. Mechanically, it uses too much energy and the skill levels up way too slow. This is the only skill I don't have currently maxed out, and I've caught everything needed except Fall and Winter Legendary Fish . Fish either need to be more useful or the skill should level up significantly faster. Archaeology - 7/10 It's fine. See a bump, dig it up. Some RNG here, but I've managed to complete every set expect for the Ritual Set without much issue. Very little value after completing museum though. Cooking - 8/10 First off, it's actually useful. Which is compared to Stardew Valley. My problem with it is exactly that though, in it's current iteration it's simply too useful. The biggest offender here being a skill unlocked later that allows you to cook loved gifts . It alone completely removes any incentive to actually use the gift system for relationship progression. A simple fix would be one that already exists for mana food , just lock it to higher tier recipes. When the most profitable thing you can do is grow and cook a single ingredient regrowable crop, that shouldn't also be the best way to recover energy and cheese the relationship system. Ranching - 8/10 The animals are adorable, but a bit of a pain. The game wants to encourage you to breed for higher tier animals, but doing so almost demands getting rid of your lower tier ones periodically, which restricts how many animal products you get. Additionally, feeding them is a pain without dedicating crop fields for them. Just let us build a silo. A late game problem, eventually animals only produce golden prouducts , which aren't interchangeable with base products. Not a big deal for me currently, but could eventually be. Woodcrafting - 8/10 A ton of cute stuff to craft. But the trees need to drop way more wood from the start. It's constantly a pressure point throughout story progression. [To be finished later]

I'm only about 30 hours in at the time of writing, just about to finish my first in-game year, so I consider these first impressions. To get the very obvious out of the way, yes, it is very similar to Stardew Valley, with some mechanics being 1-1 matches. But I love Stardew, and this game manages to improve on some of the mechanics, even adding some very popular mod mechanics from SV into the base game. This game definitely stands as its own unique experience, so I don't see that as an issue in the slightest. PROS The sprites and portraits are the highlight of the game for me. Firstly, they are "retro-anime" style, which I absolutely adore. Not only are the human sprites that lovely retro aesthetic, the actual execution of the designs is so wonderful. The sprites are all very unique, detailed, and vibrant. No character looks like another, even those within the same families have unique facial features, its so refreshing since a lot of modern anime styles seem to be the same face copied and pasted over and over. All of the outfits are so detailed and eye catching, and they all suit the wearer so well, you really get a clear read of the character's personality at first glance. Not to mention, there are seasonal outfits, and you get to enjoy a variety of clothing for every character. Some of the outfits are even a bit sexy, while remaining tasteful, and that goes for all genders. There is a curvy woman, a petite woman, younger and older women, a shorter, young man, a fit lithe man, a buff himbo, an older man with a rockin' dad bod. The diversity in bodies is fantastic! Also, the variety of appearances isn't limited to facial features or hair color, there's also a pleasantly surprising spectrum of skin tones as well. Even better, the game isn't *weird* about that fact. Sometimes you can tell a game REALLY wants you to realize and acknowledge when a character is racially diverse, to the point that it's a detriment to the story or character. There's none of that here, all the characters are charming and unique due to their character writing, hobbies, personality, etc. Nothing feels awkward or forced, and you can easily lose yourself in the world. Alongside excellent portraits, the interior of buildings have very detailed charming designs, with wonderful use of environmental storytelling. You get a sense for the occupants of the building by the furniture, decor, color, it's all very fun, cute, and visually stimulating. The townsfolk really seem like they have their own lives. They have varying schedules, they chat with each other, eat meals together, you see them performing chores and jobs with very sweet animations. You will often find them congregating at the inn for drinks in the evening, and they have great scenes with one another where they talk and play games, it's very charming and breathes a lot of life into the town. Tool progression all makes sense, you get better tools through game play, mostly mining for ore. You can upgrade town buildings by donating materials, which is fun, I always enjoy seeing changes in the world due to gameplay progression. You have barns and coops, raise a variety of animals, starting with cows and chickens. Crop growing, mining, seasonal plants. foraging, ranching, fishing, tree choppin', all the typical farming sim things are here and they all work well. There's a museum, a beach, a forest, a mine, a general store. There's a leveling system involving magic, which is very enjoyable and gives you something to look towards while doing your daily chores. Overall, very cute and pleasant, with unusually beautiful portraits. CONS I really enjoy this game and plan on continuing to play it, so please understand these critiques come from wanting this product to be the best it can be, not because I want to complain and dunk on a small team. The biggest issue I have, that I actually think will affect the replayability and enjoyment of the game overall, is that the charm of the game is actually a bit...bland. Yes, everyone is very cute, and nice, and cozy...but that comes off as shallow after a time. With...other games, the townsfolk have some bite to them. Some wit, secrets, struggles, emotion. These things endear characters to you, make you want to get to know them, and offer interest and intrigue. It also gives you a goal, "I want to get to know them and figure out what their deal is. Also, I want them to be nice to me." And I'm very sorry to say, this game has none of that. There is one grumpy guy, but his grumpiness doesn't stem from any interesting issues, and it melts away pretty quickly with a few beers. While things like addiction, abandonment, infidelity, jealousy, and other angsty things aren't "cozy", they are real and they are interesting. A great example is the (spoilers, kinda) merchant. It is hinted and hinted that he does shady dealings, and may be a thief. Ohh, interesting. Maybe you can uncover his secrets, maybe he will swindle you, perhaps you can help him with a crooked deal and you end up stealing his heart before he can double cross you! But no, he's just a really nice guy that sells underpriced goods to help the town. mkay. I wish the characters had more bite and more secrets for me to uncover. Also, where's the flirting? I understand the heart events aren't all there yet, but I was really expecting some flirty dialogue with actual spice to it. I don't need R rated lines, but something suggestive would be interesting. I am sorry, but March is no Sebastion nor Shane, and Juniper is no Abigail. They are all very cute and attractive, but that can only hold attention for so long. People love characters like Astarion, Yennifer, Sebastion, Abigail, and other angsty characters because it is fun to unravel their secrets and overcome their struggles. This game comes off more like Animal Crossing than Stardew Valley when it comes to conversing with villagers, and I do think that's unfortunate for a game that involves dating and marriage. The sexy sprites give off adult vibes for the game, but the dialogue remains very vanilla and...childish in tone. There will be many mods for this, guarantee. Also, why is March wearing less clothes in winter than he is in fall, his fall outfit is so GOOD, and somehow he is less dressed in winter, please give that man a cute jacket, help that boy out. The music. I am so sorry to the composer, but I just genuinely don't care for the music in this the game. It is very simple and to be honest, gets repetitive and grating at times. Unfortunately this game will be compared to Stardew endlessly, and this will be a key example. The music just doesn't hold a candle. Fall is usually my favorite season in all games, but I kept hoping for fall to be over due to the droning music. I doubt this will change, and it obviously up to individual people's tastes, but I found the music to be overly simple, bland, and repetitive, and not reflective of the moods for the seasons. Graphics. When I say graphics, I'm talking about the complexity and colors of the overworld. While the portraits and interior of buildings look amazing and intricate, I do find the overworld to be a bit lacking. Most things are one solid block of color, the grass, dirt, and trees specifically look very drab in comparison to the beautiful pixel art of the townsfolk and buildings. I imagine recoloring mods will be popular. Monsters. There are soooooo many amazing monster references to pull from when it comes to retro anime, I was really disappointed that the monsters were...sentient rocks and bats. That's so basic. That's so bland. I don't need silent hill monsters running around, but again, these things just have no bite. I want to fight monsters, I want them to be a challenge, a threat. This is entirely my personal taste, but I just like a good, interesting monster, that may be a threat to me. Add me some spooks! Having slightly spooky things adds so much character.

This game fills my heart with memories of playing Sailor Moon on Game Boy and Harvest Moon on PS1, and warm, fuzzy feelings. Like the ones you get when you're having a slow morning, coffee in hand, while petting a cat. To clarify: the game is not disgustingly nice. The world has not plateaued out. The characters don't feel like they're filler. Activities do not feel like mindless grind. This game offers what most cozy games don't: townspeople who have personalities and their own ways of insulting you, top-tier fashion (including your farm animals), non-expiring requests, and at its core: a sense of belongingness and community. I dare say this is one of the best in its genre. Totally worth the price (and even if it increases, it's still worth it). And to NPC Studio: Your passion and hard work really reflect in what you do. Rest assured that you've earned a lot of supporters because of your sheer love for games. Thank you for creating Fields of Mistria!

I bought this game in a fit of boredom and expected it to be just another early access cash grab disguised as a Stardew Valley clone, but now I have a little farm with a pink cow and a blue chicken and I WILL go to war for them if I have to.
