Very charming game, honest to the original port on the DS from what I remember. I feel like there's a bit more QoL features though, but could be wrong. I like the way the auto battle works, which I don't recall on the DS port, but it is godlike! It bases your auto action on the previously selected ones by the user. Makes grinding a breeze. The game itself offers what you want from an epic RPG. Never played the original 2D game, but this fits the bill from what you want in an RPG experience. From what I researched this iteration of the game offers the richest experience of FF3. More character development, more places to go, and just all around more to do than the original. The art style has its polygon charm, that 5th generation video games give. So, if you are not a fan, the 2D iteration could suit ur taste. I recommend this game, just be careful with your saves. Back them up locally, especially if u use a Steamdeck. This game and many from this time are not as cloud sync friendly, and if you are not careful, you could lose 50 hrs of gameplay by loading it up on a different machine. If you have unstable internet, play with CAUTION, backup your saves locally.

I recently finished the Pixel Remaster, and I have to say for veteran JRPG players, this 3d version is the definitively better option. The pixel remaster reverts a lot of excellent gameplay changes that were added with this version. In particular, the class balance in the pixel remaster is mostly scuffed, as it reverts back to the original Famicom game's job balance where later game classes completely invalidate previous ones. Knight is better than Warrior, Ninja is better than Knight... and basically any other non caster class. Not so with the 3d version. While some classes are still direct upgrades (black mage to magus for example), the overall balance is much better and even something like the humble red mage or warrior from the first crystal is viable for finishing the final dungeon due to enhanced gearing options and abilities, which the PR again reverts. Even the starting Freelancer job is surprisingly viable for most of the game, arguably even the final dungeon. One controversial change in the 3d version is that bosses have two actions per turn. This may sound unfair, but when you play the PR you understand why this change was made: the bosses are extremely easy and predictable otherwise. Bosses in this 3d version are consistently challenging even for well leveled parties. The game does play slower than the PR, in addition to requiring more grinding to defeat some of the game's harder challenges. But it's much more satisfying to overcome this game in 50-60 hours than it is to finish the PR in 20 without ever getting close to getting a game over. The visuals are better in this version, too. There are so many nice touches and the characters all have unique models for each job which is great. There's a neat little finishing animation with melee attacks to signal that you got the last hit of a fight before winning, which feels incredible after a long boss fight. So overall I recommend this version to people looking for quality over completionism. Better balance means more variety and party customization and that's basically the only reason to play this game over FF5, in addition to the extra challenge, which is nonexistent in the PR version.

Final Fantasy 3 is the weird-headed stepchild I didn't play until much-much later in life because my journey started with Final Fantasy 4, or as we all know it as in the west, Final Fantasy 2. I replayed it first as a Pixel Remaster and I have to say... I prefer this version of it. I'm aware that this opinion is one that could get me pelted with stones and detritus but this particular version with its enhanced 3d graphics and a more vibrant and open world (seemingly) was a much better experience than the Pixel Remaster. The story remains the same, the characters don't change .. much... there is a change in that your temporary party members are just that, temporary, and not in the actual party anymore so you don't accidentally gear them up and lose some really good/strong equipment when they leave which is another thing I greatly enjoyed, in addition to the fact that they have their own RNG based attacks they throw in from the backline. This is really, really good and as a FF fan I think these are better experiences to enjoy than the Pixel Remasters.

I went into this game expecting it to be pretty bad based on what I’d heard, but honestly, it wasn’t that terrible. That being said, unless you’re a die-hard Final Fantasy fan, I’d highly recommend going for the Pixel Remaster instead of this version. The grind here is much heavier, and aside from some minor story and mechanic differences, you’re not missing much. I did enjoy seeing the world brought to life with the 3D models, but overall, this version feels like a downgrade compared to the Pixel Remaster. If you’re looking to play Final Fantasy III, definitely pick the Pixel Remaster over the 3D remake.

Why put any amount of time into this game? Why spend 41 hours grinding for the Jack of All Trades achievement? Because I have an addiction to RPGs and trophys. This isn't a review it's a plea for help.
