If you know the game already and are just wondering how well this PC port works on modern systems, here's the answer: There's no controller support, but the port itself runs perfectly well. You can even tab out and back in without issues or crashes (maybe hit Win+D a few times to get focus on other windows). You buy, you install, you play, no mod-patches or anything required. The aim sometimes gets confused when you press the button while close to an object the mouse sensitivity settings slow down the menu mouse more than the ingame aim, and some dialogues seem to be more picky about when to trigger, but these are small things. When it comes to what kind of game Freedom Fighters is, I'd describe it as an action-focused third person shooter with tactical elements and a cheesy movie story with a lot of video game logic (red barrel go boom). Also it's in desperate need of a sequel. You join a revolution as you find New York being taken over by the Russians and from there fight to take it back by aiming for both tactical as well as symbolic targets. The way it plays out is as follows: The game is basically divived into chapters, and each chapter gives you a map with multiple mission areas that each have multiple objectives, a lot of which have effects in other places. Until you take over the main outpost in each area you can jump back and forth between them. Getting mowed down by an attack helicopter? Destroy the heli refueling station in the other district. Tired of fighting constant reinforcements? Destroy the nearby bridge so the troop transporters get stuck. Achieving these objectives while healing wounded civilians or helping prisoners escape will raise your charisma, and that in return determines how many fighters you can command. You can get up to 12 people by the end and these are the commands: Follow, defend, and attack. You can tab the key to give the command to a single team member (the game just rotates through the list as you go), hold to command the entire group, and also use targeting to send them to defend or attack another area. Another cool thing about the maps is that they often have some hidden routes. Once you find them it's usually pretty obvious which is the best and intended path. Exploration is rewarded, even in these comparatively small levels. While the tactical side of this game is amazing, when it comes to the shooting the story is different. All guns except for the sniper (which never has enough ammo to keep around) have massive bullet spread, even on the first shot. You'll need to get close to hit reliably and through this most enemies take many more shots than you'd expect. Sounds pretty bad and in any other shooter this would be atrocious, but here I see it as a balancing mechanic. If you could just easily take out one enemy after the other, there would be little reason to recruit people. Also ammo matters. You will throw away the sniper rifle again sooner than later because you usually find it with only a few bullets left. The AK is commonly used by your enemy which makes it easy to restock, but if they pin you down for a while you might find yourself using the pistol or sending your recruits in first as you've just run out of ammo again. The arsenal in this game is small, but has the most important archetypes. Last thing I want to get into: The NPC behaviour. Recruits are generally competent. They navigate the terrain surprisingly well and usually do as you ask. Since this is an action shooter and not a grid based turn based strategy game though, you don't get them exactly where you want. So when sending them behind a large box for cover (no cover system in this game btw, but you can duck), they might instead go for the half high cover next to it, or go around the side and be open to attacks, despite there being a visible cover marker right where you wanted them to go. Also the enemy soldiers are dumb as bricks. If you want their attention, just shoot them, they'll often leave their cover and "sneak" right towards you across an open street. Shoot 5 soldiers at the front desk of a building while 15 stand outside and the door is open? They don't care and neither do the other 10 on the upper floor. If it was any different you'd not make it out of there alive. In conclusion this is still great game despite some minor flaws. It still has a lot of charme, partially because of some janky bits, and a lot of cool and well working ideas that the industry has been sleeping on for far too long.

Is it perfect? No. Is it still one of the best games ever made from an admittedly biased, nostalgic standpoint? Oh, absolutely.

Last time I played this game, I was in primary school. Look at me now, I'm 32. Still a lot of fun. Deck support is average, but I've finished the game.
