[Edited for clarity on opinions of in game jokes] [SPOILERS] As someone who 100% the game, (though hasn't played it in a while), here's my thoughts. The gameplay is rather good, the story is garbage, and the visuals are pretty good. The gameplay has a bunch of options laid out in simple format (with items) so it's easy to customize the game to your liking. if you think something is too hard, apply a special gameplay modifier (item). too easy, turn up the heat with some hard core gameplay modifiers. That combined with 4 characters gives this game some options to play with. Now i think a lot of the levels in this game are serviceable, but I've seen people call out the later levels in the game and ya, some of them are definitely "interesting" to say the least. Some levels kinda feel like they go on way to long with a kinda poor concept to begin with. some of these include: underground maze level with stupidly simple yet somehow complicated "puzzles", space level with anti-gravity, which is just "big level" with very little interesting going on, and maybe it's just me here but im not fond of one of snake man's levels, but idk if that's just a personal grip or just i played that level too many times for an achievement or something. But all and all i think the game is pretty good. Parrying feels natural, everything feels fair, only complaint is perhaps it's a little brain dead gameplay wise, since parrying is so dang powerful. This game is not for people who want harder games like gunstar heroes, but at the same time it also focuses more on combat, which may put this game in an awkward place for a lot of newcomers. The graphics are very nice imo but i could see how for some this could become an issue, play the demo to make sure you don't get sick or just can enjoy the game with bright resizing pixels everywhere as I've heard of players complaining about having a hard time about seeing things in game, but as for me it's no problamo and looks great. Now, the story. Oh the darn story! Now I loved the story of the first game so I was exited to see what they came up with this time... So you know those straight to VHS tapes that Disney made, ya this game story kinda seems like that. Sense I don't feel like breaking the whole thing down, it basically ends with the player learning that no matter what happens to you you should forgive people who harm you, cuz people once harmed them. On a "spiritual" note personally I'm not necessarily apposed but this, but the game seems to be suggesting that if someone's parent's get killed, then if they kill your parents that's okay, and not only okay but they should be forgiven legally. Like wha... Merga just tried to murder the whole world by (ENTER SONIC ADVENTURE 2 MEME HERE), kidnapped the mayor, repetitively tries to kill the main cast, and you want me to just go "ya, okay live free now we forgive you cuz why not". But that's just the surface of the story, as behind the main story we casually go over complex social issues like racism and genocide, all while making jokes in a vacuum to those issues, light jokes that imo (as humor is subjective) do not land. To be clear, they aren't making fun of racism or genocide directly but still... it carries a weight to it i feel that is not properly handled, making the seriousness feel cheap and the jokes not meaningful. Are we dealing with the struggles of human conditions or are we making silly girl 4th wall break jokes, having both doesn't land well. Now the stories for each selected character does give some insight to a part of the story as a whole, which actually does differ a bit compared to FP1, and I appreciate it. With that being said it's kinda sad that the levels are all the same for each character, which makes FP1's story feel more real, and not to mention FP1 actually takes all stories (Lilac's, Carol's, and Milla's) seriously, So having these insights just feel empty. The split in the story from Lilac and Carol in FP1 actually had consequences to the story. In FP2, the story really just takes the whole thing as a joke. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not apposed to Saturday night cartoon style stories, but typically Saturday night cartoons don't try to grapple with man's short comings. These two just do not work together! I went back and looked at the first trailer for this game and dang dude, the story to that game looks like it would've been crazy good, reminds me just how bad they fumbled it here. Now with all that being said as much as i rave about how bad the story is most gamers here are here for the gameplay. The gameplay is a decent enough pass and imo you should download the demo even if you know you're not going to buy the game, as the demo itself comes with a lot of fun in itself even though it's short. This game is something you can easily play after a hard days work and casually play through, which i did. There's a good amount of casual fun to be had here. Historically speaking, this game goes on sale for $20 usd for those wondering. Happy gaming.

This is Doom Eternal to Freedom Planet 1's Doom 2016. It's good. It's better than Sonic ever was. Soundtrack pretty great too.

Review after 100% Pure gaming joy. If you enjoy platformers, and especially if you enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog platformers, this game and the first one are both worth your time. I've been gaming since the NES era, and platformers are one of my favorite genres, so it's no small compliment when I say that this might be my favorite of all time. That being said, you should not come into this game expecting just a classic Sonic experience. Freedom Planet , especially Freedom Planet 2 , has some things which set it apart from the series which inspired it. So much so that I feel it's a disservice to compare this game so much to Sonic, since I really do feel it deserves to be considered its own entity and not just regarded as the indie Sonic game series. For one, you have a health bar, not rings. This means you can't take hits infinitely. But on the other hand, getting hit doesn't kill your momentum. Secondly, the levels are long. Sonic levels are brisk, but that's not the case here. Some levels take 8-10 minutes on a good run. The levels are masterfully crafted to allow you a sense of speed while also challenging you to jump, platform, and dodge. And lastly, the character's move sets are much more robust than Sonic's. Each one has different attacks they can do depending on what direction you're holding when you press the attack button, plus some extra abilities. You also have a spot dodge ability. Think Smash Bros and you should get a pretty good idea of the kind of tool kits and control schemes you can expect. There are four playable characters to pick from. The story is the same regardless of which one you pick, but you see certain events as some that you don't see as others, which rewards playing through the game as each character. Lilac: The most "Sonic" like of the cast. She's fast, the quickest to accelerate, and has a simple moveset, including a helicopter spin, an uppercut, and a divekick. Her special ability is to do a mid-air dash which sends her rocketing off in a direction of your choosing, bouncing off of walls like a pinball as she goes. Carol: Has a Mega Man X style wall kick, plus a lot of really great attack options. Her special is to throw a disc which can multi-attack enemies, or she can pull herself towards it after throwing it for creative jumping arcs to get around platforms. I generally found her to be the strongest character once mastered. She also has the ability to acquire a motorcycle, but I found it to be the most redundant part of her arsenal, and all it really does is increase her movement speed at the cost of making her feel slippery. Milla: This character felt a bit incomplete in Freedom Planet 1 compared to Lilac and Carol, but in this, she's much more fleshed out. She plays a bit like Yoshi from Yoshi's Island , with a flutter jump and an attack that consumes ammo which she generates whenever she dodges. She can also manifest a shield which can reflect projectiles, which is absolutely devastating to some bosses. Neera: The newcomer playable character to Freedom Planet 2, who was a secondary antagonist and boss character in Freedom Planet 1. She was my favorite to control overall. She feels the most like controlling a Smash Bros character, because she utilizes both of the attack buttons plus directional pad inputs for a wide variety of offensive options. So the last thing to mention is the story. I found the story to be an improvement over Freedom Planet 1. It's much more tonally consistent, where the first one was light-hearted with a couple of dark and violent moments which felt out of place. Which isn't to say it doesn't touch on any mature subject matter, but it handles it gracefully in a game which has a mostly child-friendly mood. That being said, there are a lot of cutscenes, and your ability to enjoy the story depends greatly on how much you like the main four characters personalities and interactions. For me, I found all of the characters and the humor to be endearing, so I liked it a lot. Other people may find some of the characters grating, especially Serpentine and the monkey character. But when the absolute worst thing I can think of to say about the game is that the story (with skippable cutscenes) may not work for everybody, I think that shows that this game is very much worth your money. The developers clearly put their hearts and souls into this one, and it shows in every level, every boss fight, every beautifully detailed sprite, and every excellent music track.

Honestly, this is kind of a hot take, but I think the only reason this game series didn't get more attention is mainly due to being perceived as "furry" on the outside, but trust me is pretty good. But yeah, this sequel is amazing, it does distance itself a lot from being a 'Sonic fangame' even if the first game had already lots of influence from other Sega Genesis/Megadrive vidya. This game pushes a bit more the beat'em'up feel, adding even a dodge button, and slowing just a tiny bit the gameplay sometimes. Speaking of it, many stages are way larger, sometimes levels not being as straightforward as in the first game, but I think this is actually a right step (one of many) in comparison to the first game, giving room for more complex elements and enemies. Overall this game has so much more content and the OST is amazing even if you'll miss a couple of the iconic songs from FP1. You're likely to finish your first playthrough in around 15-20 hours or so (including beating every level, battle-sphere, boss rematch, etc... but not 100% completion) and it does not feel draggy at all. If you played the first game, basically you'll be missing our lil' alien guy, Torque, and a continuation to the previous villain's whereabouts, which (spoilers from FP2) has a high chance of being subject of a continuation in a third game, since Brevon appears as an Hologram in a secret ending , but to be honest, I think they did good with changing the subject of an otherwise predictable sequel, and giving us in exchange a pretty deep story and lore about almost anything that was rather unanswered in the first game and tons of new characters, including a new antagonist. TLDR; buy it, it's sooo worth and I love this game, there are very minor caveats but nothing is really stopping the fun.

Story sucks, main villain is awful. It's an improvement over the first game on every other front, and i love this game to bits. Thank you for existing, Freedom Planet. Carol is my waifu.
