I really want there to be a "neutral" option. The problem is, I hate the remake because it was rushed slop, but if no one buys it, front mission might well and truly stay dead in the west. So I'm torn. For beginners to the series that didn't play the original game on the PS1, this is a great game. You'll probably like it if you like combat similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, or Disgaea, with customization of the mech's legs, each arm, backpack, weapons, and core. You have a bit of play with the characters. If I stopped there, it's an objectively good game. However, It's a rushed port of one of my favorite games, lacking a lot of the passion that went into the original. The engine is good enough, and slowdowns are infrequent. But it feels like a lot of AI slop went into the game and the remake's devs either didn't care about the source work, didn't play it, or more likely was only given a few months to remake the game and had to cut corners. The mechs lost their original animations and sounds, and a lot of it feels bad. The models clip weapons, the characters feel a bit too airbrushed, and the mechs themselves just look meh. Combat is screwed up with multiple faints per battle compared to the original, and getting platinum ranks can be a crap shoot as to if you get RNG'd hard with multiple pilots downed rather than if you're crappy at the game as in the original game.
Hm okay, so this is one of the reviews where I cannot really tell you if the product is good or bad because it's a mix of both. The good thing is that this is a 1:1 "remake" of what considered by fans of the series the 2nd best game in the series, compared to the previous 2 games this one has 2 very big new things that are on completely different level of goodness : 1. In this game for the first time in the series ranged attacks are properly ranged, meaning your machine guns can be used from longer than the next time your target is on, this obviously changes the tactical approach you have to do compared to the previous games. 2. This game is the only game in the series that give you 2 completely different path of the same story that you have to choose very early in the game, choosing one will lock you out of the other until you finished it and replayed the game and choosing the other path, and the effects from that choice is big, while the start and the end of the story is like 80-90% similar your journey throughout the game would be quite different, you'd have completely different npc companions from both path of the stories. From those 2 factors alone, this game is like giving you the 1st and the 2nd games with massively upgraded tactical mechanics and therefore if you already played the first 2 games you don't want to miss out on this 3rd game. Another notable addition to the game is about the in game internet mechanics, they're being used to flesh out the world building, adding some personal stories for the characters but also contain missable actual game contents, and actually there are quite a few missable game contents that are in fact missable due to how dialogue and story progression is handled in this game, and if you never played the game (original) before you probably wouldn't even know that you missed something during the playthroughs, so this is both a positive and negative side of the game. Moving in to the "remake" side of things this is where things get really mixed, calling this game is a remake is technically true but it also leave so many things to be desired, I've played MGS Delta where I can say that even that remake is not as impressive as it could've been, but this game is like a third of a remake as to what MGSD is a remake of MGS3... At least MGSD has upgraded the graphics to like a game with a late 2010s visual, this game look like it's still on the same level of graphics with the original MGS3 game. In fact there are regression to the visuals like the wanzers here is way stiffer in their animations compared to the original game, the 2D interface also feels barebone rushed job instead of something done with proper care. That being said, on the PC at least to my surprise unlike the 2nd game this one has 21:9 ultrawide support out of the box, the game also performs on par if not a bit better than the 2nd game, so those are the positives. Overall this game is a must play if you like the series or if you have played the original and want to replay a "retro" game, and I want to see the final 2 main titles of the series getting remakes as well.
One of my favourite Ps1 games remade and i've been waiting for this one for a good while now. There are a few things I do still prefer about the original game though, mainly the more expressive animations and weapon sound effects. Wanzers felt a bit more weighty in the original and weapons felt like they had a lot more power to them. But I do enjoy the visual upgrades overall even if some of the wanzer designs have been changed somewhat to fit with them. I also give a big plus for the devs including the original soundtrack in the remake as well, I found myself much prefering it to the remastered soundtrack. It's by no means a perfect remake but overall I still very much enjoyed FM3R and at it's core it is still very much the same game I loved on Ps1, so I would still recommend it personally.
First of all, this is not a remake; it is a clear remaster with roughly 1% changes. The story and music(select original in the settings) are completely preserved as they were, which in my personal opinion is what made FM3 the best in the series. There are a few questionable changes to combat balance, but the battles themselves and the mechanics are the same. I didn't notice any of the issues mentioned in negative reviews. I just revisited a game from my childhood and had a 10/10 experience, just like decades ago.
Still one of the best turn-based games I've played. The customization of the Wanzers is very nice, and lets you try different styles of play. The occasional skill triggering can make a very memorable turn in a battle, too. Two stories can be played through with the choice being made early on. Some events will happen in both stories, as they intertwine and intermingle. Note: I do have a lot of nostalgia for this game, which may have influenced this review.
