Hm okay, so this is one of the reviews where I cannot really tell you if the product is good or bad because it's a mix of both. The good thing is that this is a 1:1 "remake" of what considered by fans of the series the 2nd best game in the series, compared to the previous 2 games this one has 2 very big new things that are on completely different level of goodness : 1. In this game for the first time in the series ranged attacks are properly ranged, meaning your machine guns can be used from longer than the next time your target is on, this obviously changes the tactical approach you have to do compared to the previous games. 2. This game is the only game in the series that give you 2 completely different path of the same story that you have to choose very early in the game, choosing one will lock you out of the other until you finished it and replayed the game and choosing the other path, and the effects from that choice is big, while the start and the end of the story is like 80-90% similar your journey throughout the game would be quite different, you'd have completely different npc companions from both path of the stories. From those 2 factors alone, this game is like giving you the 1st and the 2nd games with massively upgraded tactical mechanics and therefore if you already played the first 2 games you don't want to miss out on this 3rd game. Another notable addition to the game is about the in game internet mechanics, they're being used to flesh out the world building, adding some personal stories for the characters but also contain missable actual game contents, and actually there are quite a few missable game contents that are in fact missable due to how dialogue and story progression is handled in this game, and if you never played the game (original) before you probably wouldn't even know that you missed something during the playthroughs, so this is both a positive and negative side of the game. Moving in to the "remake" side of things this is where things get really mixed, calling this game is a remake is technically true but it also leave so many things to be desired, I've played MGS Delta where I can say that even that remake is not as impressive as it could've been, but this game is like a third of a remake as to what MGSD is a remake of MGS3... At least MGSD has upgraded the graphics to like a game with a late 2010s visual, this game look like it's still on the same level of graphics with the original MGS3 game. In fact there are regression to the visuals like the wanzers here is way stiffer in their animations compared to the original game, the 2D interface also feels barebone rushed job instead of something done with proper care. That being said, on the PC at least to my surprise unlike the 2nd game this one has 21:9 ultrawide support out of the box, the game also performs on par if not a bit better than the 2nd game, so those are the positives. Overall this game is a must play if you like the series or if you have played the original and want to replay a "retro" game, and I want to see the final 2 main titles of the series getting remakes as well.

Still one of the best turn-based games I've played. The customization of the Wanzers is very nice, and lets you try different styles of play. The occasional skill triggering can make a very memorable turn in a battle, too. Two stories can be played through with the choice being made early on. Some events will happen in both stories, as they intertwine and intermingle. Note: I do have a lot of nostalgia for this game, which may have influenced this review.

On one hand, the graphical overhaul means "we made a nearly 30 year-old game look like it is only a 20 year-old game" and also "for reasons unknown we used an AI to generate some of the most garbage location images ever seen in a game (I am really not exaggerating here, they could have used the original un-upscaled images and they would at least look familiar and charming in their very own early millennium kitschy way) but on the other hand, they also made every forth or so hit, stun or force eject the pilot, even when they raise a shield or said attack is some pedestrian's side arm that did 7 points of damage to your 600hp torso. I'm conflicted because Front Mission 3 is an all-time great strategy RPG with a very Gundamesque plot, and even with the above flaws, the FM3 Remake is still a load of fun. The new faux-Internet network also looks like trash, but isn't nearly as obtuse as the original's so at least that is more usable if not actually "better" per se. If you can't be bothered to get the original running, this is a decent option.

Let me start by saying huge fan of the original, one of my favourite childhood games. Finished the original countless times. I am biased because I rly rly want this game on PC for forever so I might be a bit "softer" in some aspects, that being said there are some things that could be better so consider this as constructive criticism and general improvements from a fan perspective: Positive changes in the remake: 1. Love the upgraded graphics, the glowing effect on the wanzers was a nice touch! 2. The little side-step mechs do when passing eachother 3. The destroyed parts on the mechs look awesome, and the bulletholes after shooting aswell 4. The fact that I can skip dialog is a huge deal, finished the original at least 6 times theres only so much dialog you can click trough :D Negatives in comparison to the original: 1. I rly miss the option to "speed up" the animations by holding a button ( I dont mean the instant speed up in the settings btw ) 2. Overall fighting feels decent missing some "sparks" on bullets so feels a little flat 3. The camera when defeating a mech is too close, and status that shows up at the end of the animation lasts for a very short amount of time 4. The character expressions look kinda weird not sure how to explain it better 5. Please let us change the keybinds for confirm / cancel command 6. After playing some more explosions seem really underwhelming, based my first positive explosion comment on the first explosion in the animated scene in the beginning 7. The overall movement / jumping of the wanzers is very slow, dash is good tho. An option for x2 instead of instant would be nice Bugs: 1. The army mission second part, the rush to the elevator, if you defeat the enemies in the first part without opening the gate the second wave wont come out 2. Taal base, big wanzers with cannon-like body dont use their main cannon at all 3. Futai Tunnel - Terminal Area - Right after I selected my team, it was time to position the wanzers, the camera was stuck in one position ( top left looking at the wall, could see the enemies, but not my wanzers ), enemy HP was green, fixed itself after I positioned my team blind and then Ended my turn ( camera could not be moved unless I ended my turn first ) 4. Had to load to a previous save, I'm in "Longsheng House" I cant go out. There is nothing I can do, the only conversation is with Li and it leads to nowhere, no option to exit no nothing. ---GameBreaking--- 5. It seems the "load the autosave at the beginning of battle" is bugged. Every time I loaded in this playtrough once I choose my wanzers and go into the fight, shortcuts to move the camera left/right moves the HPs of wanzers left and right ( rotates the HP bars around the wanzers ) and untill you make a first attack you cannot move the camera from the starting position, once the first attack is finished the camera goes back to normal AreYouSureAboutThis?: 1. The stun situation seems very wrong. In the original it was a rarity to get stunned. I had 4 missions in a row where one of my wanzers get stunned, last mission 2 got stunned in the same turn for 3 turns, this feels.. wrong? 2. There are moments in which single shot weapons ( like rifle / missle / melee ) seem to only hit the body, I counted 9 in a row moments where that happened, so not sure what happened there? 3. As far as I can remember, when an enemy pilot ejects he can only go back to his own wanzer / vehicle, they seem to be going into anything that is available including your wanzers. Also the soldiers without wanzers are also going for the "steal" 4. Prevent Loss is broken, I had it proc 9 times in a row TO SUMMARIZE: I did not finish the game yet, mostly because it became frustrating. I love the original and this game CAN reach its full potential. Why didnt I finish? After getting stunned by a 15dmg pistol on 2 wanzers, then getting stunned with a shotgun, I couldnt enjoy the fights anymore. I started avoiding melee ( bcs it goes last ), AI seems very stupid (example: staying in melee range when they have a ranged weapon), the fighting feels bad and thats kinda the whole point of the game.. make a cool custom wanzer and fight, not get stunned on 3 out of 4 wanzers and "Loose your fighting spirit". Please keep working on it. Not trying to be negative. Hope you keep working on it! Thank you for remaking one of my fave games ! Ill Keep adding as I go trough the game :)

I can't shake the feeling that the developers simply didn't have the budget or capabilities necessary to remake such a complex game. I'm sure they wanted to do something good, and you can see it in the small details, such as wanzers stepping aside for each other when moving, new inscriptions and details, a number of QoL improvements, and so on. The developers also listened to feedback and improved certain issues, although they didn't completely fix them (the appearance of wanzers, sounds, animations). I won't criticize Forever Entertainment or MegaPixel Studio for things that Square Enix should have taken care of. Of course, these small developers couldn't make a full-fledged remake, and as I understand it, they had to look for workarounds and use AI tools. I have more questions for Square Enix and their vision for the franchise. Are they even interested in developing it? Are they willing to invest a lot of money to develop something? They were clearly able to do it with Final Fantasy VII Remake, so it's not a matter of not being able to do it at all, but rather a matter of not wanting to do it with the Front Mission franchise. Either way, my love for this game isn't going anywhere, I'll definitely keep playing the original for many years to come, and I'll also play this remake. In the end, I can gaslight myself that it's not all that bad, it could be worse, and even this remake still has a few good bits to it.
