Really has to be played by more people, the fact that this incredibly unique game exists and was recovered from its lost media status to be put on Steam with a translation is nothing short of a miracle

I love this game! One of my favourite games that I have ever played. It's a psychological, point and click, Horror game with a surrealist aesthetic. The models are very striking and grody. And the music is unsettling, atonal, and off beat, which really helps set the atmosphere for the rest of the gameplay. No matter what, something will always feel off while playing this game, even if nothing is going on, the atonal music and its unpredictable melodies will always keep you on edge. 10/10

Under the veneer of ugliness and biomechanical decay, there's a sincere human story being told in Garage, and it unravels its moments of grotesque beauty with unexpected grace for a 25+ year old game. Some rough edges may have been smoothed out, but to my knowledge it's fundamentally the same game that came out in 1999 and almost became lost media. Like most Japanese style adventures, the game involves moving from place to place and talking to NPCs to get information and progress the game state, occasionally needing to use items or show them to NPCs. There is also a heavy emphasis on fishing, which is mechanically simple but pretty satisfying. It becomes mandatory later in the game, which may turn some players off, but I enjoyed it. You need to refill your fuel and Ego levels at respective clinics every so often to avoid a game over, though it's thankfully cheap to do so. Navigation is very confusing for the first hour or two, but once you understand how the inner and outer tracks face opposite directions, it gets easier. The timer is always running even while in menus, but don't worry about the cycle number going up, it won't lock you out of any events or endings. Judging from how the game looks I expected it to be very alienating and hard to get through, but I was able to finish the entire game without a guide, except for one minor thing I got stuck on near the end. As long as you're talking to NPCs at every opportunity and reading notes, you will be provided with enough information to figure out how to progress. Every machine NPC has their own habits, motivations, histories, relationships to other machines, etc. And in spite of how they look, I grew quite fond of them. It was surprisingly touching, feeling happy for an elderly shut-in machine who tells you that he's started going for strolls and just had a nice chat with his neighbor, or feeling sorry for a machine who begins to lose their sense of purpose and eventually succumbs to Ego depletion. The artwork by Tomomi Sakuba and soundtrack by Tomonori Tanaka are distinctive, often repulsive and disconcerting, but can also be quite beautiful. There are heavy psychosexual undertones in the character designs and overall story, with a lot of Freudian and Jungian inspiration. The music is largely atonal mechanical noises with droning, wheezing melodies and I think it fits the game perfectly, and some of the ambient tracks are really gorgeous. After spending some time in the world of Garage you'll feel more at home than you might expect, engrossed in a routine of rolling around the tracks, refueling, fishing, shopping, and checking in on your fellow machines. This is a game that makes you think and feel and sticks with you well after you've stopped playing. Garage definitely earns its status as a cult classic and I honestly can't recommend it enough.

A very dark, pessimistic game about a society of "machines" - homunculus-like creatures attached to carts, which exist in a world built around a track system. The visual style is immediately arresting, as are the ambient sound textures and the constant rattle of your wheels as you go from place to place. Without two forms of fuel, you will die, so you're constantly monitoring your levels as you explore, trying to find out why you're here. This quest for self-knowledge, combined with the rusty, industrial aesthetic, reminded me a lot of Planescape: Torment . Like Ryūnosuke Akutagawa in his story Kappa , the makers of Garage present their world as a shadow version of the one we know. The rules and behaviours contained therein serve as a pungent comment both on society at large, and the psychological motives that govern individuals. And yet, in truth, the machines of Garage are a mixed-bunch: while there are those that lose themselves in material possessions, substance abuse, or sexual sadism, there are also those that exhibit higher aspirations, whether it be the desire to create, or living in a conjugal situation at odds with the rest of the world, in which the majority of female machines must exist in degrading conditions I won't elaborate on here. It's a very grim game, not for the fainthearted, and containing some truly disturbing scenes (i.e., potentially "triggering"). The horror is communicated most effectively by the visuals, chiefly the character designs, and the sheer inventiveness of the premise. The weak point is some of the writing, as text from documents you acquire later on in the game can slip into an overwrought, adolescent angst. Some might also have a problem with the fishing minigame that is required to progress, and the process of acquiring "stamps" (money) to further your exploration. But I think on the whole, those attracted to this kind of game will be patient enough to endure some minor quirks in the gameplay. This remaster has even added an anachronistic but effective in-game achievement system, providing motivation to perform tasks and explore.

Just played that garage game for the first time and got a game over in the first hour because I had like 15% Ego and all the characters stopped understanding me when I tried to talk to them. Tried to rejuvenate by riding the carousel (literally just a carnival carousel) but the ticket counter cashier couldn't understand me so I was soft-locked and died from basically insanity a few minutes later ~ 10/10 This game packs more deep truth about our world than any other game, jokes aside. Btw the intro implies it *might* be inspired by La Jetée, it was giving those vibes. So if you like this, check that short film out or vice-versa. EDIT: I'm now near the end of the game and it is wearing on my patience. There are things you need to get for high prices, forcing you to go around the map in circles endlessly checking all your crab lines to get more crabs to sell. There's also fishing but that takes even more time to do. This late-game part feels really monotonous and not fun. Still, I think the game is interesting for the world and writing but it's more of a mixed bag. Like a 3 or 3.5/5 EDIT #2: still on the same chapter near the end of the game and it's sooo tediuous. I don't want to fish a rare fish to fish yet another rare fish. I didn't play this game to fish or collect crabs. Neither of these things are appealing but this game leans on those aspects at the end. Really a slog now. Not sure if I'd still recommend it..
